A Senate hearing that began with glowing tributes to a St. Louis businessman and his qualifications to become ambassador to Belgium turned bitterly divisive Tuesday after he was accused of supporting a controversial conservative group.
Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., grilled nominee Sam Fox about why he donated $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 presidential race. The group of Vietnam veterans made unsubstantiated allegations against Kerry then the Democratic presidential nominee and charged that Kerry did not deserve the medals he won in the Vietnam War.
Fox, one of the nation's most generous contributors to Republican candidates and causes, said he shared Kerry's concerns that politics "has become mean and destructive."
Fox said he didn't recall who asked him to give to the group and blamed partisans on both sides for contributing to so-called 527 groups that are not subject to conventional campaign finance rules.
"Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., grilled nominee Sam Fox about why he donated $50,000 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 presidential race."
THAT, Senator, is none of your Freakin Business.
Yeh!!!!!!...... I bought 20 of John O'neill's "Unfit for Command"!!!!!!..... Please Blame me as well!!!!..........
"Because I was hoping we'd find out if the real reason you didn't get into Harvard Law School was a dishonorable discharge for your treasonous activities on returning from Vietnam."
He should have just told Kerry " Because I think you faked your war record; you're a coward and a traitor."
How do you feel about it now, knowing what you know today?
FOX: Mr. Senator, let me say this. Be it 527 or anything else, if I thought what they were printing was not true, I would not contribute to it.
I added the bold from this partial transcript, taken from the Washington Post via Drudge Report.
I agree with the earlier comment that he'd do it again tomorow, should Kerry throw his hat in the ring again.
I'm disappointed in Mr. Fox. It would have been worth losing the ambassadorship (which mayhappen anyway) just to explain to Mr. kerry the resons, 1,2,3,4,5,...why he donated that money.
I'm sure Kerry will be filing his libel lawsuit any day now....
Fox should have said that the reason was "seared, seared into his memory," but for some reason he just can't recall right now.

Kerry didn't realize they were playing tackle instead of touch. He wants a do-over.
What a weasel. He'll do just fine working as a diplomat with the US State Department.

His lackey actually had the nerve to try and tell me that Kerry has done more for veterans than any other senator. When I asked him for an example, the only thing he could come up with was that he went and visited them overseas. I told him that wasn't the kind of support they needed, and he told me since my mind was made up and I wasn't going to vote for Kerry anyway, there was nothing else he needed to tell me. I kid you not, that is exactly how my conversation with him went. I asked for someone else that would put either put that position in writing or at least dispute it in writing somehow, and he sent me to someone's voicemail. I gave my address, let's see what happens.
When I say his lackey, I mean Kerry's lackey. I'm sorry, I didn't write it correctly.
The MSM could never poke any holes in the Swiftees' accounts. I remember well the day I opened the New York Times and saw them switch tactics to calling the claims unsubstantiated even though the article didn't cite any facts at variance with the Swiftees. Soon, all the MSM parroted the same language.
The charges were made by over 200 veterans many of them highly decorated.
Kerry did nothing to refute the charges mainly because he can't.
I'm a proud donator to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

OK, so then how many eyewitnesses does it take to substantiate the allegations?!
Uh, why did the Sam Fox buy a cheeseburger last week?
Because he wanted to?
Does anybody hear the howls of outrage from the press or the ACLU about this brazen attempt by Kerry to chill free speech and political expression? Anybody? Hello?
