Al Gore responded to charges that his house consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, with the new Oscar winner saying he has taken many steps to reduce the carbon footprint in his home.
The former vice president and former presidential candidate told Thinkprogress.org that he has signed up for 100 percent green power through Green Power Switch, installed solar panels and uses compact fluorescent bulbs and other energy-saving technology. He said he also buys carbon offsets a service that tries to reduce the net carbon emissions of individuals or organizations indirectly, through proxies that reduce their emissions and/or increase their absorption of greenhouse gases.
"What Mr. Gore has asked is that every family calculate their carbon footprint and try to reduce it as much as possible," said Thinkprogress.org. "Once they have done so, he then advocates that they purchase offsets, as the Gores do, to bring their footprint down to zero."
Gore was responding to a report issued by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, which, citing figured from the Nashville Electric Service, said that since last August, Gore burned through 22,619 kilowatt-hours at his house more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. His average monthly electric bill topped $1,359, the report said.

Eggs'actly!
"Hey, why wasn't my son in on this? Things have been rough since they stopped 'Oil for Food'!"
That will be a racket -- if it isn't one already.
If we all purchase offsets will they quit bitching at us?
Same as paying a poor person to take your place in a war when you are called to duty.
Sheesh! Just think if he did like my husband & I do - wear thermal underwear in the winter, shut off the rooms we don't use, use awnings, shades & ceiling fans in warm weather & do everything in one trip on the way to or from work.
He could cut that bill way down.........but I forgot, I'm one of the "little people" - I'm supposed to live that way - he's one of the elites, he doesn't have to.
Nevermind.
Anyone have a photo of Al Gore's house?
Well I for one rise in defense of Gore. It takes a lot of energy to keep his global warning fat ass cool.
Is ALGORE using offsets the same way wealthy people bought other people for $300 to go into the civil war in their place?
Typical DemocRAT B.S.
Yep, with every breath you pollute the world with CO2. Sounds like a good idea to me. Who would think that CO2 could be turned in to a harmful gas, even I thought that was silly. But then again, it's what makes liberals liberals, silliness.
I guess the Goracle was caught and now thinks solar panels will save him. How about giving 90% of his house to the homeless. After all, who needs more than 2,000 square feet.
A lot of these things are big bucks items, something the little people can't afford.
So jetting around in private jets, huge mansions, and humvees is "as much as possible"? Plus, if the watermelons really believed all of civilization depended on reducing global warming they would buy carbon credits enough to have a negative carbon footprint instead of just to zero. After all, isn't that what they want all of the U.S. to do?
Hey,...how'd Gore do in Tennessee in 2000?
My question is this: if albore is off jetting around the globe on his quest to stop glorebal warming, who's in the house using ALL that energy? He and Tipper have grown kids so they are probably gone most of the time. Tipper's most likely with albore or in D.C.. So, who's running up the tab at home?
That was one of the major problems that Martin Luther had with the Catholic Church at the time and was a principle reason for his Protestant Reformation. Perhaps sensible people can use the "offsets" practice to launch our own reformation of sorts today.
He has "applied for it"--does that mean he did it yesterday? After the report came out? Strange that he doesn't say his house is using Green Power or whatever it is, but says he has signed up for it.
I have never heard of carbon offsets. It must be something like the whipping boy on the old southern plantations who took the beatings for the master's son.
Al Gore is a lying con man.
