Gay Republicans seek recognition (Rudy Mentioned)

NEW YORK (CNN) -- These days, it seems as if it is good politics for conservatives to address the annual convention of gay Republicans.

"Keep pushing the Republican Party because you're pushing it in the right direction," New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told the Log Cabin Republican convention over the weekend.

That is a far cry from the 1992 Republican convention, when the party's far right wing attacked the gay community.

"Bill Clinton and Al Gore represent the most pro-lesbian and pro-gay ticket in history," said Pat Buchanan at the 1992 GOP convention.

The convention crowds responded with enthusiasm. But now, some Republican candidates are taking a less confrontational approach.

How did he go nuts? He never waiverd on defense or taxes, it's just that issues that were not even on the radar when he ran and thus were not talked about became more prevalent as he got older and his opinions got out.

He may not of advertised it, but he was always pro-choice. It never really would have came up (gay issues and abortion) when he was running for president so know one really knew. He represented the Liberterian leaning west to a T and am proud to belong to the party he served.

As a conservative site, Free Republic is pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-Constitution, pro-Bill of Rights, pro-gun, pro-limited government, pro-private property rights, pro-limited taxes, pro-capitalism, pro-national defense, pro-freedom, and-pro America. We oppose all forms of liberalism, socialism, fascism, pacifism, totalitarianism, anarchism, government enforced atheism, abortionism, feminism, homosexualism, racism, wacko environmentalism, judicial activism, etc.

Do you figure you'll change this site right after you get through wiping the pro-life plank out of the GOP platform?

One has to hate Goldwater to be a conservative? My, my, times have sure changed.

27 states now have bans. Arizona did buck the trend, 51 to 49%, probably because McCain was in favor of it.

The composite percentages in 2004 and 2006 were 67-33, and 61-39%, respectively. That's called a landslide in my book.

LOL, so If I am a proud Goldwater Republican that makes me for abortion? I dont agree 100% with his views, and I bet he would probably support the matter going back to the states. I think he was flat wrong on the matter of Abortion.

But 9 out of 10 ain't bad.

He started sounding like a liberal and bad mouthing the right of his party. Considering he used to be on that right, I figured he was nuts. In hindsight Reagan makes Goldwater look very small.

I think they really are, literally, suicide for the GOP. The GOP has put itself where it's reliant on a chunk of voters who constantly threaten not to show up to polls if every one of their demands is not met - positions which alienate the majority of other voters. In this last election, the GOP did very poorly among independents, and there was poor turnout among their supposed "base", because they pouted and stayed home.

Well we will never know what Goldwater would have accomplished as President so we can't really compare but you will get no argument from me about Reagan. People still fight to this day to fill those ginormous boots. No one ever will, he was one in a trillion and I wish everyday he was still here to guide the party.

The social conservatives can hardly be seen as the 'right' of the party. As far as I know, Goldwater did not change, the party changed. As early as the 70's, Goldwater refused to support the HUman Life Amendment, though he was opposed to abortion-on-demnad.

He badmouthed the Religious Right, and not the right wing as a whole. Can you show me where he ever badmouthed anyone for being too strong on defense or taxes or shrinking government.

And that same social conservative wing of the party is also the side of the party that is now called "Big Government Conservatives". Many are at ease with the welfare state.

Well--so Rudy wants to 'push' (no pun intended) the Party in THEIR direction?

I guess that makes sense actually. The Rudy-apologists here keep telling us that we (the traditional conservative base) are no longer needed. Yep, replacing us with 'liberals, independents, and more gays' is definitely the direction that the Republican Party needs to move. /s

I hope the Rudy-apologists enjoy their NEW PARTY--I wish them well.

Except that we have this one little advantage over the UK, the rest of Europe, and Canada. It's called the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. How, exactly, would one force churches to perform gay marriage without repealing the First Amendment? Even today, churches cannot be forced to perform interracial marriages (and there are a few that refuse to do so).

Goldwater supported Reagan, and was very keen to have been part of that 1980 revolution, the year when conservative Christians broke for the GOP.

Actually, Goldwater did not care for Reagan, mostly because of his associations with the Christian Right.
