NEW YORK (CNN) -- These days, it seems as if it is good politics for conservatives to address the annual convention of gay Republicans.
"Keep pushing the Republican Party because you're pushing it in the right direction," New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told the Log Cabin Republican convention over the weekend.
That is a far cry from the 1992 Republican convention, when the party's far right wing attacked the gay community.
"Bill Clinton and Al Gore represent the most pro-lesbian and pro-gay ticket in history," said Pat Buchanan at the 1992 GOP convention.
The convention crowds responded with enthusiasm. But now, some Republican candidates are taking a less confrontational approach.

Perhaps because they don't care as much about those issues. But it's interesting. You're a purist (I assume small-l) libertarian. But I believe in a strong state, in order to provide security, not to do social engineering, so Rudy is the perfect candidate for me.

I don't know anyone here who is advocating gay marriage.

"Rudy Guiliani, the candidate that most resembles a fat hanging curve ball."
Now, that's good. Like it.

I can't speak for him, but libertarian does not mean one is against a strong defense. Most are for limiting the Fed's to their constitutionally provided role which includes defense.

How many states have voted on gay marriage bans? How many passed with flying colors? Every last one.
But Bush won those states without being intolerant. He opposed both gay marraige and anti-gay language. I think that's the key to success.

Of course, but he was blasing Rudy's police state tendencies. Thus, I assumed that he was talking about the ways Rudy used to catch criminals.

We disagree. Read the posts of those who frequent the *homosexual agenda* threads. They are suicide for the GOP. The electorate does not want the definition of marriage changed but they do not like the anti-gay vitriol at all.

Most gay groups have anointed themselves as "Community Spokes groups" for gays like "sharpton" has anointed himself the speaker of all Black people.
Most are just special interest shills pushing their own agendas that most of their own "communities" are against.

Some supposed 'conservatives' would trash Barry Goldwater if he were to run for president in this day and age.
Of course they would! He was very much against the groups of religious activists that started calling themselves "conservatives" and taking over the GOP in the 80's. He was pro-choice, he was for lifting the ban on gays serving in the military...he flunked just about every litmus test of the social "conservatives"!
Since when did the test for being a conservative involve a laundry list of social issues? What about big issues like tax reform and reduction, entitlement reform, budget deficits, spending cuts, eliminating pork and gov't subsidies...I think you get the idea.

I know everything about Soros. He's a anti american POS and a leftwing kook, and filthy rich. He spreads his money far and wide. There is no disconnect.
Gays can lobby for gay issues with or withoug Soros $$. Pot smokers can lobby for "medicinal marijuana" with or w/o his money. Algore can cry about phony global warming with or w/o his money. He's a wealthy leftie, like hundreds of others, giving money to moonbat cuases of all kinds.

Hey, I with they'd been a helluva lot less inclusive and drummed Foley out ages ago when they found out about him and the pages. That cost the GOP some seats.

To me being a conservative was always about conserving what our founding fathers intended, a constitutional republic. And the two most important issues to me are returning the Federal Government back to it's constitutionally authorized roles in which both parties have practically abandoned, and defending our republic. All else are back burner issues when it comes to the federal level for me. Goldwater and Reagan are measures we should measure our candidates against, not the pat buchanans of the world.

It was not Foley being a gay that was the problem, it was his wanting to sleep with adolescent boys that was the problem. And yes, his ass should have been out a long long time ago.

Goldwater became more liberal as he got older. I think he went nuts, myself.

Thanks, even some one of my limited age has had time to evolve and think on the issues.
I think the GOP should vow to never let the SCOTUS or a Democratic Congress reinvent marriage, but also vow to leave a community matter to the state and local governments. In the they should be "gay neutral".

Some of these I agree with you on - affirmative action, special protection, hate speech/crimes, etc. If you go up the thread a bit, we were discussing the differences between being pro-gay, anti-gay, and simply neutral. These issues I agree fall into the pro-gay category.
However, I must take anything you say with a grain of salt after reading this:
"Forcing chuches to recognize gay "marriages"."
This shows how poor your grasp of the issues is. Nobody, not even the most far-left liberal, has ever suggested that we could or should change a religious institution's definition of marriage. The controversy is over whether to allow government to recognize gay marriage. There are some churches that already perform gay marriages, but these are not recognized by the state. Also, there are heterosexual couples who do not belong to any religion, and have a purely governmental marriage, an option that does not exist for gay couples.
To: pissant
He may not of advertised it, but he was always pro-choice. It never really would have came up (gay issues and abortion) when he was running for president so know one really knew. He represented the Liberterian leaning west to a T and am proud to belong to the party he served.

If you're going to make bold statements like that, you might want to make sure they're true. A gay marriage ban was defeated in Arizona, and it was a close vote in many other states.
