The 20 Rarest Muscle Cars

Among muscle cars, there always were a few that, for whatever reason were a little more rare than others. This list shows the rarest factory built production muscle cars. These are cars that ANY buyer could walk into ANY dealer and conceivably order. One off cars for company executives, dealer modified cars (Yenkos, Baldwin-Motion, etc.) and purpose built race cars (427 Cobras) are not included. Cars are ranked by total built by year, model, body style, and engine. Transmission breakouts are also shown, if known. Further breakdowns (by color, options, accessory) are either impossible to get or impractical. Note that by their nature, Hemi Convertibles are widely represented on this list. Convertibles represented everything that the typical muscle car buyer didn't want - a higher price, more weight, and generally lower top speed. Add to that the high performance (and high price tag) for the Hemi engine, and it is no surprise that Hemi Convertibles are the most rare of all muscle cars. In fact, throughout the Hemi era (1966-1971), Chrysler built 8,420,000 cars, yet only 179 of them (1 out of every 47,000) were Hemi convertibles. Truly, as a group, these were the most rare of the rare.

What a GREAT thread!

My submission for the list would be The 1969 Charger Daytona - with around 500 made.
Not the rarest of the rare, but certainly one of the more unusual.

My own story about one I nearly owned.
My first car was a 1962 Chrysler Newport. A 4-door family car that, with some minor work was nearly untouchable on top end among my peers. Well, 13 months after taking ownership I inserted an oak tree in the back seat at 110mph, three feet in the air, sideways. As you can imagine it did the car in.
Well, my search for a replacement ended when I located a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 Hardtop. This thing was a maroon color and clean as a whistle. Still a minor (not quite 17), I needed my Dad to actually take ownership.
I brought the car home for my Dad to look over. He smiled and said "Well - lets take it for a spin!". We headed south on Highway 51 toward Brookhaven, MS. He was behind this little old lady doing about 45 or so and when the coast was clear Dad floored it to pass.
Well, the rear tires broke loose with a loud bark and Dad nearly ran over to poor lady before he could get out from behind her.
He finished the passing maneuver, calmly pulled over, turned around, and headed back home. The not a word was said for about 10 minutes (seemed like an hour). Just as we turned into the driveway I finally got the nerve to ask "Well Dad, what do you think?".
My father calmly said "I will drive this back to the owner. If I ever find you behind the wheel of this car again I will have your drivers license pulled and you can get it back when you are 18 and can sign for it yourself."
We never spoke of the car again.

Oh yes, and when he said something - that was it. No point at all in attempting to "discuss" it. LOL!

I am blessed to still have him around and in good health. I still seek his counsel from time to time.

You must have missed the part where global warming ALSO is responsible for it getting colder! LOL!
