The cave in which Jesus Christ was buried has been found in Jerusalem, claim the makers of a new documentary film.
If it proves true, the discovery, which will be revealed at a press conference in New York Monday, could shake up the Christian world as one of the most significant archeological finds in history.
The coffins which, according to the filmmakers held the remains of Jesus of Nazareth, his mother Mary and Mary Magdalene will be displayed for the first time on Monday in New York.
Jointly produced by Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici and Oscar winning director James Cameron, the film tells the exciting and tortuous story of the archaeological discovery.
The story starts in 1980 in Jerusalems Talpiyot neighborhood, with the discovery of a 2,000 year old cave containing ten coffins. Six of the ten coffins were carved with inscriptions reading the names: Jesua son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Matthew, Jofa (Joseph, identified as Jesus brother), Judah son of Jesua (Jesus son - the filmmakers claim).
Decades of research
The findings in the cave, including the decipherment of the inscriptions, were first revealed about ten years ago by internationally renowned Israeli archeologist Professor Amos Kloner.
Since their discovery, the caskets were kept in the Israeli Antiquities Authority archive in Beit Shemesh, but now two have been sent to New York for their first public exhibition.
Although the cave was discovered nearly 30 years ago and the casket inscriptions decoded ten years ago, the filmmakers are the first to establish that the cave was in fact the burial site of Jesus and his family.
The film, which documents the stages of the discovery, is the result of three years labor and research. It will be broadcast on the international Discovery Channel, Britain's Channel 4, Canadas Vision and Israels Channel 8, which also took part in the film's production.
According to the filmmakers, the films claim is based on close work with world-famous scientists, archeologists, statisticians, DNA specialists and antiquities experts.
EXACTLY!!
Of course!
Religion generally, and Christianity specifically, is the largest hurdle that the perverts have in establishing their suicidal lifestyle as "normal".
This might be the giant step in their desire to convince the normal population that "AIDS is good for you".
Mind you, I doubt that, but you have to admire their dedication.
> Coffins weren't used in Jesus's day.
Ossuaries (bone boxes) were commonly used. After the body had lain out for some time, the remains were gathered and placed in the box.
I've read similar speculation to this story in a book called "The Jesus Dynasty". The author in that case didn't try to pretend any evidence that would come of the cave could be conclusive.
I don't understand how this filmmaker could claim anything other than a very interesting coincidence of names.
> Does anymore need to be said? "World-famous scientists"?
Yeah, 'cause everyone knows science hasn't contributed to man's understanding of the world...
</s>
To have the bones of a man, his parent, and his descendants, the maker of the bone box would be located much later in time than thebodies from which the bones are 'harvested'. Fraud is too easy under such circumstances, especially when there was a booming business in 'religious artifacts'. The 'brother of Jesus' bone box was proven a fraud, but it likely gained the perpetrator of the original fraud a tidy sum of money from someone duped by it.
I just found a graveyard in Vermont with George, John, and Thomas in it. I guess that means that is where the first three Presidents are buried.
My guess is that Mary, Jesus, and Joseph were pretty common names back then. I mean, there were four Jesus's where I worked when I got out of college. We used to joke that we just needed one more for a Jesus Basketball team.
Some people just can't wait. It's sad. They're so eager to discredit the Lord as if their wish that He does no exist makes it true. What fools.
This is a valid and fascinating observation, which I have never seen discussed.
How many "muhameds" are there in the world today?
Were those names common? uncommon? Was there a published list of "most popular babies' names in 30 A.D.?
Inquiring minds...
I am a lifelong Catholic. I feel no need to defend my faith, I have nothing to apologize for; I do not feel compelled to force anyone to view my religion as I do. Or theirs. This is simply another "Inquirer" moment, for me.
The problem with a three dimensional model is that features from the side of the head would be wide when you straightened the fabric - you wouldn't have a face five inches wide, you'd have one ten inches wide.
The shroud is like a photograph, not like a draped sheet.
Now if you had a something like a bas-relief, distorted to give the correct proportions when the sheet was flattened - that would be intriguing. Coming up with the proportions by trial and error - very challenging. You could do it with a computer, sure.
Were there pictures in the Pop. Science article?

They would swear the monkey AND the unicycle was actually there. The "proof" is obvious. LOL.
You're kidding, right?
These arguments are absurd and useless.
I can see no difference, aside from faith, between the muslims treating their "books" as valid and your statement. None whatsoever.
Or, for that matter, Mormons view of their holy book.
Aside from the fact that they were written centuries apart, insofar as each religion views their own book, there is no difference whatsoever.
That's whay it's called faith.
Taking up rhetorical or physical arms to "defend" your religion carries no weight whatsoever with me.
"The names that are found on the tombs are names that are similar to the names of the family of Jesus," he conceded.
"But those were the most common names found among Jews in the first centuries BCE and CE," he added.
Kloner dismissed the combination of names found in the cave as a "coincidence."
Well, that answers my questions in post #170.
Being Jewish, I am sure that the good archeologist has no ax to grind defending the Christian faiths.
And clearly, not being inclined to grasp the opportunity to attack Christianity, he obviously is not gay, either.
Walter Mccrone was a scientist who said he had microscopic evidence that the shroud was painted with vermillion and red ochre in a collagen medium in the 14th century. He didn't recreate it with a 3D model - I think some French guy claimed to do that. I couldn't find a Popular Science shroud of Turin article.
I don't think 14th century portrait painters EVER got a face so realistically proportioned - so perhaps we're back to draping a sheet over a 3D model rubbed with paint - and back to the 3D to 2D proportion problem.

Well, no.
Or yes, but only if you believe in circular reasoning.
The majority of aware, educated humans on earth avoid circular reasoning, no matter how good the "cause".
Muslims are a great example of those who embrace it unconditionally.
Great link.
Thank you for that.
I have never heard of the author, but he strikes me as sober, objective, neither an apologist for Christianity, nor a shill of the gay persuasion, arguably bigger enemies of Christianity than islam...
Hah!! Leonardo actually went better than that!! Are you aware that the "men" representing *both* Jesus, *and* Judas, are actually the same guy???

The US Air Force, which *also* tested the shroud, has stated unequivically that there are *no* microscopic traces of any pigments, of any kind on the shroud. How do you reconcile this?
