The mayor at his side, longtime Largo City Manager Steve Stanton disclosed to the St. Petersburg Times on Wednesday he is undergoing hormone therapy and counseling in preparation for a sex-change operation.
Through the process, which could take well over a year, Stanton plans to remain as the chief executive of this city of 76,000. He has the support of Mayor Pat Gerard, who was elected last March.
Hes a dedicated city manager and puts his job first, she said.
Stanton, 48, said he eventually will change his name to Susan, the name his late mother would have given him if he had been a girl.
Married with a teenaged son, Stanton said he has thought of becoming a woman since childhood. In recent years, he said he has gone to clubs, the symphony and the grocery store as a woman, but only in places like Orlando, Jacksonville and Atlanta.

Life ain't easy for a boy named Sue.
But I get the sense that this is all his private business.
I wish him and his family well.
"I worked for the Largo Library when I was going through high school. Stanton was alright, but if you crossed him he could ruin your day. I always thought that he had issues, but nothing to this extent. I guess that all that I can hope for is that he is OK."
I don't give a damn either. Better that he go through that than me.
"I wish him and his family well."
Bless his heart
If that were more than just a meaninless sentiment, then you'd really have to choose between the two. He did.
An ugly man who wants to be an ugly woman after mutilation surgery.
Hopefully it will work out well for him/her. When I hear about totally dysfunctional people wanting sex-change operations, I'm pretty quick to assume they just need to get their heads screwed on tighter and quit blaming their problems on stuff like being in "the wrong body". But when someone who has a history of holding down good jobs and staying out of trouble says they feel they really need a sex-change operation, I'm inclined to take their word for it.
The interplay between chromosomes, hormones, brain development, and genital/gonad development is very complicated and no serious medical researcher claims to understand it all. I'm sure things really are out of whack in some people who appear physically normal, but the dysfunctional ones need to get their acts together first, because the surgery doesn't fix dysfunctionality -- just halfway fixes the sense of gender misfit. A dysfunctional man who gets a sex change operation will just be a dysfunctional woman, and if you're dysfunctional it really doesn't matter what sex you are. And in many cases, I think fixing the dysfunctionality will cause the urge for a sex change to go away.
I don't either - not that I wish him harm -
but why wasn't his wife interviewed? Does Insurance cover this?
to me this was telling "Stanton, with Gerards support, had planned to go public in June so his son could be out of town when the news broke. But that changed this week after the Times heard of possible changes in Stantons life and approached him"
So the hell with his son and how it impacts him - just as long as he's controlling the story.
Maybe they should rename the newspaper the St. sburg times.
You left out the pervert part, other that that you are dead on. What a nut job.
I feel very sorry for his wife and son. I would imagine this will destroy their marriage and cause problems for his son.
If he was a classic car, they'd call the procedure "chopped and channeled".
Snip-snip here; snip-snip there; and a couple o' tra la la's.........
