I live in northeast Alabama. Last weekend my wife and I traveled across into Georgia, to Cedartown. I saw more Mexicans in Cedartown, GA than I ever did on a visit to Texas!!! I was absolutely stunned at the number of Mexicans walking on the city streets, in cars, sitting in the areas around town. I lost count. My wife was the first to say something. She said, "when the hell did you turn left into Mexico City???" I burst out laughing and said, I was thinking along those same lines!!!

The republicans should make the democrat undermining of the job market a HUGE issue.

Hey, you're supposed to adjust to the "New Economy", downsize your expectations, and start living like a Third Worlder on Third World wages. Sorry to say, you husband is part of the most reviled class there is: The American Worker.

I don't see the word "illegal" anywhere in your complaint. Is this about illegal workers or cheaper workers?

My husband had to turn down dozens of callers because he couldn't do it all.

You have answered your own question. A need unfilled in capitalist society will eventually be filled by someone.

By the way, were your 1st generation brick masons immigrants to this country?

I know I'm going to sound like an evil prick here, but truth-be-told, those jobs do not belong to your husband or your son. Those jobs belong to the employer, and he can hire whoever the heck he wants to.

How about a slight modification of your rant? Aren't you really against illegal aliens? Yes, the majority of illegal aliens are Mexican, but their race/nationality isn't the real issue, is it? It's really the fact that they're here illegally, not interested in truly immigrating--speaking English, becoming good citizens, paying their taxes, etc.--that makes you angry, isn't it?

Really, anyone could take business away from your family if they're willing to do the work for less money. Norwegians, Slovaks, Scots, Japanese or Yankees could do exactly the same thing as the Mexicans, if they so chose. It has nothing at all to do with the other workers' race, but with their economic situation.

So, please don't perpetuate the already rampant image of conservatives as racist jerks. Nobody likes for their family to be put out of work, but it's important to be honest about how and why it happens.

It doesn't happen because the other guy is Mexican.

Maybe the brickmasons could find a way to build an appreciation and new market for high-end, high-quality brickmasonry, the way Starbucks created a market for great coffee. It would require a lot of work, brains, planning, and even some competition, but what the hey?

They could also take advantage of unionization the same way that it is done in New York City and other large cities. (Whoops, that's a liberal idea, can't have that.)

"I am getting really sick of the Mexican Invasion costing so many jobs in the Southwest Virginia- East Tennessee area. My husband is a brickmason.

Virginia is not the only state where third world illegal aliens are taking the jobs of Americans.

Here in my back of the neighborhood I see them huddled together under bridges, overpasses and main thoroughfares waiting to be picked up treasonous elitists to do the work that Americans should be doing.

May every evil befall these treasonous employers!

Uncle Sam's Hammer was made in the U.S. but forged in Mexico. Bush is allowing it and now it is simply a race to the bottom as U.S. workers have to compete with sub-standard labor just to stay alive.Just as our economy is falling apart so will all of our building simply because people want to save a few bucks and hire illegal aliens. Soon so will the American Dream of everyone who is just now entering the work force and seeing how hard it is to compete. This is our country but Bush is giving it away... Well Mr. Bush, when Juan and Jose finish your construction and return to Mexico with all of the money AND the Labor warranty (if any), dont raise my taxes to compensate. And when your building falls apart dont call me to repair it. I had to sell my hammer to put food on my familys table.

Bristol Compressors completely closed down a couple of months ago, putting hundreds of people out of work. I do not know of the status of the one in Mexico though.
