I am getting really sick of the Mexican Invasion costing so many jobs in the Southwest Virginia- East Tennessee area. My husband is a brickmason. He is the 5th generation mason in his family- our son is the 6th. Up until just a couple of years ago brickmasons had contractors ringing their phones off of the wall wanting them to do work for them. My husband had to turn down dozens of callers because he couldn't do it all. Things have sure changed . Now, a lot of contractors in this area have gotten dollar signs in their eyes and all that they can see are cheap Mexican workers. My husband has actually had a contractor (real builders that know how to actually build a house are really scarce around here anymore) pull Mexicans on the job that he was working on because he was in such a hurry to get it finished that he couldn't wait the 2 weeks that it would have taken to do the whole job. They will pull in a huge crew and wipe the job out real quick. They waste a lot of brick though (they get paid by the 1000 brick). My husband is a very good, fast mason. His speed and quality is not the issue here. Most of these workers cannot even speak English. It is really aggravating to have lived in a place your entire life and have your livlihood seriously threatened by people that are not supposed to be here in the first place. How do we get rid of this problem? Also, on another related note: It was announced today that there are hundreds of jobs being cut in ANOTHER local factory, Bristol Compressors. I was told several months ago that a construction site in Mexico was marked with a sign that read:" Future site of Bristol Compressors" Is this a coincidence or is there another company by the name of Bristol Compressors?
It's not GW's fault. It was the people who thought skilled labor was safe from out sourcing, like programmers, cad operators, help desk people and today....engineerss.
Your next!
Teeheehee.
Please explain to us all just where it says you have a right to job?"
Anti discrimination laws in hiring absolutely say you have a right to a job.
Well and wisely spoken.
I'm a pure Capitalist! I allocate Capital for a living."
You're an investment banker who screws little investors by getting rich using their money?
Uh, the problem is, plenty of people buy BMWs or even Rolls Royces because not EVERYONE looks to buy cheap on certain items.
The other thing you overlook is that those hiring illegals don't PLAY BY THE SAME RULES!!
Blacks and whites would still be working the vast majority of these jobs if they had a CHANCE TO COMPETE. How the hell can you compete when as an American you have certain protections that illegals are willing to ignore for themselves.
I know someone who had an illegal fall off a roof while working and they simply replaced his ass. Those hiring illegals like a cheap and PLIABLE work force.
You act like it's a pure competition. They can even set up businesses without licenses and do everything under the table so they don't have to compete (again) on the same playing field.
Get over yourself and try to think intelligently. One can be free market and anti-law breaking that puts one person on UNEVEN footing in the market through criminal activity that any of US would get hammered on.
It even comes that way to traffic infractions. They go after Americans and resident aliens far more than they try to nail illegals. Why? Because they know the illegals will not pay or disappear.
I haven't read the thread, so forgive me if this has been posted.
Oh, not any more, pal. Now they sue---no kidding, and they WIN. They are getting real bold here in So Cal.
Heh heh heh, yeah, I caught my typo!
I could say they're printed in platinum leaf!

That's true.
We used to do thousands of dollars worth of film for our pre-press, now with our calibrated Macs+InDesign+PhotoShop and Adobe professional PDF we just downlaod the settings from our printer and we don't need film anymore.

When I was a carpenter we had exacting standards, then, little by little the crap we called "California Framing" moved into Spokane, then North Idaho, then Kansas, and when I moved to Vegas to build houses I rarely saw any quality work at all, it had spread across the country, and most of the crews were illegal aliens, paid under the table using absolutely substandard construction.

You should change your name to Marie Antoinette.
Let them eat Capital!

"No one should have a Mexican ghetto in their neighborhood."
In my girlfriend's old neighborhood in Brooklyn what was once nothing but Italians and Irish is now almost entirely Chinese boarding houses.
They are supposed to be single-family dwellings, but the Chinese move in and rent out the rooms, ten or more to a room, you can see it in block after block after block, and no one gives a damn.
And they never assimiliate. There's no flags flown on Independence Day, no one speaks English so you can say "good morning."
It's literally no different than if they were living in Shanghai or Kowloon.
It's so sad...we're seeing the destruction of our nation.
Immigrants in the past loved America and taught their kids to become America.
Watch the movie Moscow on the Hudson and see all the Russian immigrants struggling to learn the constitution, to learn English.
Not now...the Mexican immigrants wave the Mexican flag and boo Anglo teams, the Chinese act as if they are living in Beijing, not America and the Arabs keep their chadors and hatred of our Western ways.

The republicans should make the democrat undermining of the job market a HUGE issue.
Why waste your time. Bush has always wanted a "new America". Now he's getting it.
We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture. Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende. For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America. As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico. George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000. |
Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:
In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on.
