Sick of Mexicans Taking our Jobs
Nelliemae

Posted on 02/21/2007 5:53:58 PM PST by NellieMae

I am getting really sick of the Mexican Invasion costing so many jobs in the Southwest Virginia- East Tennessee area. My husband is a brickmason. He is the 5th generation mason in his family- our son is the 6th. Up until just a couple of years ago brickmasons had contractors ringing their phones off of the wall wanting them to do work for them. My husband had to turn down dozens of callers because he couldn't do it all. Things have sure changed . Now, a lot of contractors in this area have gotten dollar signs in their eyes and all that they can see are cheap Mexican workers. My husband has actually had a contractor (real builders that know how to actually build a house are really scarce around here anymore) pull Mexicans on the job that he was working on because he was in such a hurry to get it finished that he couldn't wait the 2 weeks that it would have taken to do the whole job. They will pull in a huge crew and wipe the job out real quick. They waste a lot of brick though (they get paid by the 1000 brick). My husband is a very good, fast mason. His speed and quality is not the issue here. Most of these workers cannot even speak English. It is really aggravating to have lived in a place your entire life and have your livlihood seriously threatened by people that are not supposed to be here in the first place. How do we get rid of this problem? Also, on another related note: It was announced today that there are hundreds of jobs being cut in ANOTHER local factory, Bristol Compressors. I was told several months ago that a construction site in Mexico was marked with a sign that read:" Future site of Bristol Compressors" Is this a coincidence or is there another company by the name of Bristol Compressors?

Hey NellieMae...

Do you think you have some divine right to those contract dollars? Sounds to me like your hubby is too damned expensive. Free Enterprise lady...sometimes we forget how well it works.

I would like to personally congratulate the internet for single-handedly destroying the entire printing industry(and millions of high-paying jobs) in less then a single decade.

This same story was happening in CA 15 years ago......Seems no one cared then...and nobody cares now.

Sorry...sounds so defeatist...but that's the straight skinny.

So it's a race to the bottom...

It's called the free market and competition.

When you go to the store to buy something, do look to pay the most or the least?

I'm sure you say... please let me pay twice as much as I could buy the product elsewhere...

I'm not buying it, not for a dollar...

No problem. I should have put the "" tag at the end...:-)

Best of luck though to you and your husband. We have the problem squared here out west.

"Go to hell!

There's been a lot of that here lately. If you're not on board with their particular point of view and have the audacity to express it, it's "go to hell" or "get lost". In this case if you're not on board agreeing with a vanity post which could have easily been found on DU, you're the bad guy. What a bunch of whiners.

Sorry about your husband and you have every right to be outraged!

There's no logic reason why LEGAL Americans should have to compete with ILLEGAL INVADERS. Free market my foot! This is aiding and abetting a crime. Those who employ these illegal aliens should get fined so heavily that they would think twice about hiring these criminals!

One thing I've certainly noticed with the flood of cheap illegal immigrant labor is the poor quality of the work they are doing.

Here in Nevada almost all residential construction is done by illegal workers.

I walked to the post office just after we bought our new house. The brand new sidewalks are third-world quality. Uneven, poorly finished, quite clearly done by someone with no concrete skills whatsoever.

We have truly sold our souls to the devil on this immigration mess.

In our local Wal-Mart the stockers must be all from Mexico. The boxes are all bilingual, with English printed on one side and Spanish on the other.

The vast majority or times that shelves are stocked the boxes are turned around so the SPANISH side shows, like we're shopping in Tijuana or Toledo.

Plus, we went to a restaurant the other day, it was closed, and the sign was bilingual, the Spanish "Cerrado" was on top, more prominent, in bolder trype, than the English "Closed."

Pissed me off!

My girlfriend's grandparents came from Sicily, through Ellis Island, and THEY learned English, why the heck can't the Latinos???

We are a melting pot, and English should be the roux that binds us all...

Please tell me how that is fair?? They are willing to do the work for less... Period. I have no interest in how they get it done for less only that it cost less.

I think most Congressmen believe pro-borders Americans can't rally half a million people to support their cause.

On the other hand, the illegals can do this: http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1768764

So guess who wins?

"is too high the organization offering the opportunity will choose someone else. You need to become competitive with the market or find something else to do."

This scenario seems to repeated in many areas.
But is it OK to flaunt the law and allow illegal aliens come in masse? They are happy to live a 3rd world existence in our country.
Costs are shifted onto the rest of us. Health care, schooling, etc.
Many are uninsured and drive. Costs are shifted onto the responsible people when an accident happens, etc, etc....

Immigration is a great thing, illegal immigration is not.

"I would like to personally congratulate the internet for single-handedly destroying the entire printing industry(and millions of high-paying jobs) in less then a single decade."

I'm involved in the printing industry, and this is untrue. The internet has actually led to more printing. The bigger threat to domestic employment in the printing industry is offshoring to South Korea and China, possibly even Viet Nam. How they can sell it for less than we pay for the same paper stock is beyond me. Currency distortion, I guess. Marketing services will be next on the block. I've already experienced some pressure to do my product photography where the product is produced. I'll survive, one way or the other, but I'll have to admit, I'm not looking forward to just being some sort of a broker. I actually enjoy seeing projects come to fruition, to get involved, touch it, feel it, smell it. Won't be able to be very hands-on with production ocurring on the other side of the planet.
