NY Alliance Works To Grant Voting Rights For Legal Noncitizens [Illegal aliens to get the vote?]

New York, NY (AHN) - The New York Coalition to Expand Voting Rights, an alliance of immigrant-rights activists, renewed their efforts to allow legal non-citizens to vote in New York City elections.

The activist alliance-which includes the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Center for Constitutional Rights, the Community Service Society, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund and dozens of other groups-urged City Council and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to allow legal immigrants to vote in elections for mayor, comptroller and public advocate, as well as for the five borough presidents and 51 council members.

The alliance is urging both Mayor Bloomberg and the New York City Council to support the Voting Rights Restoration Act, a bill introduced by Councilman Charles Barron of Brooklyn that would allow legal immigrants who have been in the country for more than six months to vote in local city elections.

Due to the fact that it typically takes 8-10 years for legal immigrants to be granted citizenship, immigrant-rights advocates contend that the current law violates the longstanding U.S. principle of "no taxation without representation."

Cheryl Wertz, of New Immigrant Community Empowerment, echoes this sentiment, saying, "More than 50,000 adult non-citizen taxpayers in those two districts are disenfranchised by citizenship voting laws."

Currently, six communities in Maryland, including Takoma Park have given non-citizens the right to vote in local elections, while non-citizens may also vote in school board races in Chicago. Meanwhile, Massachusetts, Amherst and Cambridge have approved non-citizen voting measures, but are still awaiting approval by the State Legislature.

Just heard this Cheryl Wertz speaking on FOX News. She wants to ensure that illegals get the vote so they can be ENTITLTLED to all the wonderful benefits in America and so they NEVER have to live in fear of being deported!

Do not vote for anyone who is pro illegal alien, unless you wish a permanent end to conservatism in America!

Yo Pedro, choo ain' got no green card, cho ain' got no vote.

This is an unveiled attempt by the illegal-loving libtards to pack the ballot box.

What other nation in the world allows non-citizen residents to vote?

I checked, no full moon tonight......

No votation without legalization.

That would eliminate Giuliani, McCain, Romney, Brownback and any Democrat.

I don't care if they are legal aliens. How many countries where US citizens reside allow them to be a part of the electoral process?

Just another step of "incremental ism" from the far left. "Citizenship" means nothing to them anymore. Or, more to the point, being an naturalized American citizen is a "bad" thing because we are the cause of all that is wrong with the planet.
Just the same reason for the popularity of Obammma Sama, WHITE GUILT, you read it here first!

Good point and this is why I am totally against DUAL CITIZENSHIPS. They are nothing but trouble and opportunity for crime.

So, someone who was born here and perhaps has generations of lineage in this country, who has worked and maybe built a family, or has come here legally and been here long enough to become a citizen and have a stake in the place, is no different from someone who shows up here one day and has stayed at least six months?

I don't think so.

Voting is supposed to be a privilege....for those of us who are citizens, pay taxes and DO NOT BREAK THE LAW.
No one should be "entitled " to anything...not even citizens who are too lazy to get their asses off the welfare rolls when their health and availability for work permits.

NYC is a lost cause anyway. What's the big deal except to New Yorkers who stand to watch the city collapse?

Someone said the Dims wouldn't go for an immigration package but rather, do it by changing one law at a time. We're seeing that happen.

If they want them to vote in local elections fine. But they should be arrested if they knowingly encourage and allow criminal alien Non citizens of the United States to vote in Federal Elections for the Presidency and the House and Senate.

Wonder if New York City would much mind if the residents of West Virginia ALSO voted in their elections. Like, if you are going to have illegal aliens doing the voting, then why not American citizens helping them out.
