In a dramatic finding, a new poll shows a solid majority of Americans still wants to win the war in Iraq - and keep U.S. troops there until the Baghdad government can take over.
Strong majorities also say victory is vital to the War on Terror and that Americans should support President Bush even if they have concerns about the way the war is being handled, according to the survey conducted by Public Opinion Strategies.
The poll found that 57 percent of Americans supported "finishing the job in Iraq" - keeping U.S. troops there until the Iraqis can provide security on their own. Forty-one percent disagreed.
By 53 percent to 43 percent they also believe victory in Iraq over the insurgents is still possible.
Despite last November's electoral victories by anti-war Democrats, the survey found little support among voters for a quick pullout of U.S. forces.
Only 25 percent of those surveyed agreed with the statement, "I don't really care what happens in Iraq after the U.S. leaves, I just want the troops brought home." Seventy-four percent disagreed.
The survey was conducted before last week's House of Representatives resolution repudiating Bush's war policies.
But by 53 percent to 46 percent, Americans said Democrats are going too far, too fast in demanding troop withdrawals.
But the poll of 800 registered voters found Americans pessimistic about Iraq's fledgling democracy.
Only 34 percent felt it would become a stable democracy, compared with 60 percent who said it would not.

The New York Post seems to be becoming America's newspaper.
These audacious headlines trumpeted to and for the unwashed masses must really cause some heartburn to the uber elites of the NYT (who secretly crave their Page 6 fix every day).
The American public is fickle. First they elect a democratic congress to muck everything up, then change their minds in a matter of weeks.
hummmm......
I guess they were disappointed in that poll.
don't you mean "deeply saddenned"?
No drama there... the drama was created by the DBM. It's called PROPAGANDA.
Good. Because thatg is what GWB is going to do, despite the carping by Pelosi and her loser friends.
Unlike other polls, this asked the questions in direct, unbiased manner.
Hence, the results.
oh, sorry
I thought "deeply saddenned" was reserved for the Dems.
But, hey, "deeply saddenned" works for me (among other things) when it comes to MSM.
LOL
I'm still surprised (imagine wide eyes here) that they even reported it!
"...fickle"?
I'll say it, just plain stupid.
When I was younger I thought it would be wonderful if everybody would vote. I don't believe that anymore.
I tend to blame the Republican politicians that abandoned Bush when the poll numbers started going south. I would have given Bush low marks for not winning the war and not kicking Bolshecrat butt. Granted Bush is not the most eloquent speaker there is/was, he or Cheney should have not left unchallenged the Bolshecrat line before the election.
I must say that these poll results more match my attitude.
That is where the fickleness lies. I don't think most Americans ever wanted to leave Iraq without winning. Only the leftist nutcases (and a few around here :).
Here in Ohio, Mike DeWine was defeated by Communist Sherrod Brown, not because of his support of the wqr, but because it was perceived that he didn't do enough to 'fix' Ohio. Mid Terms are individual/ local elections.........not a national referendum.
It's just that the American people are too dense to realize that a series of local elections can lead to national disaster..........as they did in November.
This poll is in line with a poll I posted on my blog yesterday:
Poll: Most Americans Want to Win in Iraq

Thanks for posting this.
you have raised the most significant point in politics, and the biggest obstacle to gop success
voters are, on the whole, morons
they don't want to be 'educated'
they don't want to be 'persuaded'
they don't want 'intellectual debate'
the majority (!) are influenced by far more simple things:
ridicule, employed by freepers and even reagan, is far more powerful. mark steyn, ann coulter, rush limbaugh are prepared to humiliate the socialists at every turn, but bush and the gop through their confusing actions undermine their support and positions constantly
simple, repetitive soundbites (its the economy, stupid) earns more votes than elite treatises on nuclear proliferation
negative portrayal of opponents (swift boat vets) burns deeply into flip-flop charlatans
aggressive battle for every news cycle prevents the ideas and positions of opponents to cement into the voters thoughts, and provides supporters in the trenches with talking points for contradiction of accusations
this is all rocket science to bush and the gop, because they have failed miserably at politics without the base doing their work. their response? betray the base!
I'll be surprised if this gets out on the evening news.
The NY Slimes to carry this story DAILY for a MONTH,
on the TOP HEADLINE ... same as they did the Abu-Graba$$
story, right !?!?
