The lack of knowledge of history on these threads gives me the shivers.
In a certain sense...FReepers lash out at folks who remember what words mean...because they have no knowledge of the history. I very MUCH know what "pickaninny" means, because old, departed members of my family were out-and-out racists.
I am sure that Jay Leno, walking down the street in LA, could ask teenagers, "What is the Confederate Flag?" and just get blank stares.
I lived in Immokalee, Florida a couple years and the Albemarle of North Carolina for 5 years.
I heard the term pickinini. But I said I thought it meant a bunch of kids that roam the street. I didn't know it meant a race of kids.
Excuse me? You accuse me of not knowing history because I don't know what the definition of a racial term is?

OK< I just had to check, and yeah, i got buttons, too! They were way down in the bubblewrap envelope.
Someone is gonna have to get real close to read these buttons. Not the greatest graphics, but they'll work for now.

It was meant as a descriptor of poor, unkempt black kids. Not generally meant as an insult, but I reckon could be taken as such. The equivalent of "white trash young'uns"
