Angus Reid Global Monitor : Polls & Research Hillary, Gore Would Defeat Gingrich in 2008 February 20, 2007
(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Republican Newt Gingrich trails two prospective Democratic presidential nominees in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 50 per cent of respondents would vote for New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2008, while 43 per cent would support the former House of Representatives speaker.
In a contest pitting Gingrich against former U.S. vice-president Al Gore, the Democrat holds an 11-point advantage. Support for Gingrich has increased since November, but remains below the 45 per cent mark in both match-ups.
Gingrich represented Georgias 6th district in the lower house from 1979 to 1999, serving as speaker from 1995 to 1999. He was the co-author of the 1994 "Contract with America", a policy document released before the mid-term election to outline specific Republican Party policies and proposals. The Republicans regained control of the House of Representatives in that election, with 230 seats.
On Feb. 16, Gingrich criticized two fellow party members, declaring, "The idea that these campaigns have to be this utterly stupid and destructive. I saw something the other day where (Kansas senator Sam) Brownback is attacking (former Massachusetts governor Mitt) Romney. I mean, what a dumb way to spend your life."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.

Well, considering Gingrich isn't campaigning or officially running...those are good numbers for Newt.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office.
Sure can't tell it from the way the MSM behaves.
Newt is probably the weakest of the GOP candidates right now outside of the nondescript bunch. So this poll tells me more about Hillary and the former Vice Perpetrator than it does about Newt.

Amazing numbers actually, when you consider he has not even stepped up to the plate, and started campaigning AGAINST Hitlery and her power-mad socialist ways. And that should even improve the numbers even more. I think a fighter like Newt, unafraid of the filthy MSM, could pull it off. Strong running mate TBD.
It is impossible for Newt to win the Presidency. It will not happen even if he had twice the funding of anybody else.
I like Newt but he is an unattractive, pointy headed policy wonk that women will not vote for in great numbers. The majority of women are not motivated by ability or expertise. They spend more time studying a new toaster to buy than the politicians they vote for (the latter is true for most men as well, but their emotional responses tend to look for leadership abilities more than appearance. They want a "macho " man, a man's man, etc)
BTW: Thomas Jefferson could never have won office today either.
Hillary "Rotten" Clinton (D)or AKA, Hillary Rotten
These are very solid numbers for Newt right now. He has also crept us in the latest Rasmussen poll and Survey Poll.
He hovers at 43%-45% in them now.
In other words, without declaring - and running against a candidate who's been running for years, essentially - he's within striking distance.
Also, consider that there is no way in hell Hillary outperforms Bill's best (48%). Just no way.
Newt can win. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Just wait until he's actually out there, selling himself and his ideas.
Nobody wins the Presidency (or most any office) running against things.
I have to disagree with you in one instance. Newt would be a lot stronger candidate than McCain. McCain is a dangerous individual when considering him for the Presidency. He has no loyalty but to his own election. Look how he is addressing Rumsfeld today compared to a year or two ago. He will turn on anyone. The word on the street is that he even turned against his own military officers while in prison in Nam. If this proves to be true, he doesn't have a chance in hell of getting elected. Newt is the strongest, most educated of all of them.
Let's take those numbers considering that Newt has not entered the race and the election is over a year and half away. The last two elections were pretty close, Newt can close the gap.
"...In other words, without declaring - and running against a candidate who's been running for years, essentially - he's within striking distance...."
Absolute nonsense. Please do not allow yourself to enter fantasy land because of any polls at this stage.
I'm sure this must be a news flash to many of the Sun's readers.
I agree there is a lot of support out there for Newt. Newt is a great speaker and teacher, his mumbers would only improve.
I agree. He's almost neck and neck without even running. That's a pretty good start!
...but then again that was fiction.
I like Newt but I feel his time has come and gone.
A Gingrich/Gore debate, an even bigger mismatch than a Gingrich/Hillary debate.
I would fire up the popcorn for that one!
Trying to watch the media spin and Gingrich/Gore debate into a Gore win would be the height of Orwellian black comedy.
Did you ever notice when the "analysis" after a debate determines that the debate was a "draw" that it was a total destruction of the Democrat?
Gore breaks down and cries during debate, crosses his arms and says I won't answer that question. Gore is asked a question and remains silent for his allotted 45 seconds. We declare this debate a draw.
You mean selling himself by appearing almost daily on one TV or radio program or another?
Like he has been doing for the past year?
