A proud Florida couple is taking their record-setting miracle child home today - a 4-month-old girl who is the most premature baby to ever survive.
Amillia Sonja Taylor was only 9 1/2-inches long when she was delivered by C-section on Oct. 24 - 21 weeks and six days after in-vitro conception.
Full-term babies spend 37 to 40 weeks in the womb.
"We weren't too optimistic," Dr. William Smalling, of Miami's Baptist Hospital, said yesterday. "But she proved us all wrong."
There is no known baby born after less than 23 weeks who has survived. Amillia was the world's fourth-smallest baby.
"I put my faith in God," said her dad, Eddie, an electrical engineer who lives in Homestead. Mom Sonja is a teacher.
"I just made sure to get here to be at her side."
Neonatologist Dr. Olga Garcia, who trained at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in The Bronx, said Amillia was a fighter right from the start.
"She tried to cry - a spontaneous movement we wouldn't normally expect in a baby so premature,"

BIG FEAT, LI'L FEET: Amillia Taylor's very little piggies - shortly after delivery.
Sonja Taylor is overjoyed to be taking baby Amillia home after four months in the NICU at Baptist Children's Hospital in Miami, FL. Amillia is the world's youngest gestational-age baby, born at 21 weeks and six days on Oct. 24, 2006. Weighing less than ten ounces and measuring only 9.5 inches in length, she is also the fourth smallest baby in the world to survive. (Photo: Business Wire)
Every baby is a miracle, a blessing from God's gracious hand. It is tragic that our godless society has branded children as a burden to be disposed of, instead of a blessing to be cherished.
Amazing. That picture of the little feet is quite something!

I wish that instead of Sonja her middle name was "Viable"
What a baby doll, she is so adorable. I wonder what the pro- abortion crowd has to say about this. Thank God for this little miracle.
Yeah, so, could someone remind me again how abortion isn't murder?
A handy bit of information in more ways than one. One, in that faith has played a part. Two, that the family is well able financially- great.
Again, thanks to those wonderful people of the medical profession- all of them. My day is so much better for seeing this post.
Can you and Stacey identify with this?
After reading about how many threads this story had, I knew you must have seen it.
Atta girl Amillia!
God bless you, little Amillia!!!
It is what causes me to be for the PBAB. Reason should dictate that Doctors should not work to save a third trimester fetus in one operating theater, yet abort a fetus, closer to gestation, in the room next door. That would be illogical. If a baby could survive outside the womb I am in favor of allowing that chance. Before then it is up to the person to decide if she will be a mother or not.
Was the mother having some medical problem that caused them to take the baby so early? The article wasn't clear on why the section was done at that stage.
