Global warming is "unequivocal," according to the just-released report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The most likely culprits are people - all of us. Yet, apart from insightful comments by former Vice President Al Gore, there has never been much public discussion about the role of human population growth in global warming. Professor Tim Dyson of the London School of Economics indicates that a 40 percent cut by 2050 in per capita carbon emissions in the developed world could be completely cancelled by global population growth. It's time to open a "second front" in the battle against global warming by stressing the need for population stabilization - sooner rather than later.
Scientists warn that temperatures will continue to rise unless we stabilize greenhouse gas levels. Global warming will be accompanied by increased sea levels resulting in massive flooding of homes and destruction of fragile wetland habitats. To slow down this process, experts estimate that global CO2 emissions must be slashed. Yet the United Nations projects that world population will rise 40 percent-- reaching 9.1 billion--by 2050. And even if we change our ways, the environmental footprint of each human being will never reach zero. As population increases, the challenge of slowing climate change becomes ever more difficult.
After all, it is people, not birds or bears, who drive Hummers and hybrids and who heat and cool homes and offices. Although the vast majority of population growth occurs in the least-developed nations, the people there, too, are using more fossil fuels every day as they seek better lives.
What can we do? We know that family planning works everywhere. When women and couples are free to make their own informed choices, they choose to have smaller families. Thirty years ago, for example, Mexican women had almost seven children each. Today, thanks to education and the availability of family planning, they have an average of 2.4 children. Globally, at least 350 million couples lack family planning services. Here in the United States, one-third of all births are unplanned. And the Bush Administration's family planning failures, from its Global Gag Rule to ideologically driven abstinence-only programs, contribute directly to millions of unwanted and unplanned births.
If we could cut in half the number of unwanted births in the United States alone, we'd have about 5 million fewer births over 20 years. Family planning makes sense for people and for our fragile planet. It's vital to focus on thorny technical issues such as tax credits, energy alternatives and emissions trading programs. These efforts are especially important here in the United States, where less than five percent of the world's population produces about one quarter of the world's carbon dioxide emissions. But cutting energy consumption must be coupled with stabilizing population. More people use more energy. If we had zero population growth, part of the global warming problem would, well, melt away. Global warming is too big a problem to be solved by energy experts alone. It's about people. It's about how many of us there are and how we choose to live our modern lives.
We can start by supporting the notion that every woman and every couple should have the resources and power to control their own reproductive lives. If every child is planned, we'll go a long way toward solving global warming and making a less-crowded and healthier world. Global Warming activists and PETA -- perfect together! Two groups that hate humans and are determined to reduce human society to levels of universal unhappiness.

Actually the optimal world population is three.

We've been told for years by the envirowackos that population control was important to the health of the earth.
So a lot of leftists listened and stopped having babies and now the demographics are such that the EU is in death decline and can't survive. American women are having 2.1 children which is the bare minimum needed to for our country to support itself socially.
The one group that didn't listen is the Muslims. They're mass producing.
If, say, Christians as a large bloc were mass producing children, the liberals would be condemning the religion for that. Notice the silence regarding the Muslims mass producing.
What is so fragile about this planet?
It sits out in the middle of freezing cold space. It's bombarded with gamma rays from the sun. It has a molten core. It has earthquakes, and tornadoes, and hurricanes and volcanoes.
And yet, it has somehow been able to exist for at least a billion years.
We give our grandson "unbreakable" toys that he manages to completely disintegrate within hours. Sometimes minutes.
This planet is anything but fragile.
I wish these people who preach "population control" would lead by example. They can start by leaving this planet volutarily.

Ping me if you find one I've missed.
Don't forget the Muslims - gotta have a lot of kids so some can grow up to be suicide bombers and the rest can take over the planet.
Also as the concept of population control becomes more widely promoted by the MSM, now that global warmimg is a "given", then Roe v Wade will become more sacred, thus the MSM urgency to further campaign for Dem candidates who will nominate pro-choice judges. ie, abortion stops global warmimg.
So we need to get people to exhale about 10% to 25% less than they do now.
We need to kill off all the cows - the UN says they're responsible for a lot of pollution.
Come on John. Show your commitment to your cause.

Not that it'll make any difference in the global temperature. But the entire manmade warming issue is bunk anyway. Just another leftist cry for forced socialism.
If every child is planned aborted and used as so many spare parts for stem cell research, cloning experiments, and facial treatments, we'll go a long way toward solving global warming and making a less-crowded and healthier world.
Mr. Robinson, this is what concerned me about the Next Gingrich Contract you posted a while back:
3. Develop a new model of quality long-term care in which both the care and the quality of life are compatible with a twenty-first century American expectation of progress and innovation;4. Use the new technologies and new scientific knowledge to turn disabilities into capabilities and change government regulations and programs to help every American achieve the fullest possible ability to pursue happiness.
Seems to me that Mr. Gingrich's words could very well be interpreted into the agenda the author of this "news" article has. Do you know where Mr. Gingrich stands on embryonic stem-cell research, "population control," or so-called "death with dignity"?
I know that Duncan Hunter has expressed openly that his conviction is that life begins at conception, and he has supported the Fetus Farming Prohibition Act, voted in favor of the Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act, which would direct federal funding to stem-cell research that does not rely on embryos, voted against the Stem-Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005, cosponsored The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2005 and The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act of 2006.
I can't find anywhere on his site where he even mentions "the environment" or Global Warming - hooray for that!
Watching "A Christmas Carol" this past season, one little little comment Scrooge made stood out. A couple of men asking for charity had just told Scrooge that without the help of offerings, many would die. Scrooge responded " All the more better to decrease the surplus population." This notion of overpopulation has been around a long time.
This guy starts out with a lie. The IPCC said there was a 90% chance that humans were responsible for global warming. This is not "unequivocal". In fact, saying something as politically charged as global warming has a 90% chance of being true is the very essense of butt-covering equivocation.
I'm just going to assume he went downhill from there.
But before all these people who want to cut the human population by two thirds get too far down the road on their fantasies, they should realize that the ovens needed to cremate that many people will emit an awful lot of CO2.
