George Will....[is] altogether too generous...in describing Hunter's record:
"....He is...a skeptic about free trade."
Hunter is not a "skeptic" on free trade. He is a demagogic, Lou Dobbsian populist who would have us believe that free trade is destroying the U.S., when by any objective measure free trade has been key to the rise of a massly affluent culture over the past generation. (Today's middle class routinely enjoys creature comforts equal to or surpassing those enjoyed by the upper class in the 1950s.)
And Will simply ignores Hunter's horrific record on spending. Hunter is all for earmarks, doesn't care that the GOP Congress spent as freely as LBJ and the "Great Society" Congresses of the 1960s, and -- in a meeting with the U-T's editorial board -- showed no interest in trying to control the rising cost of entitlements, which will bankrupt the Treasury if unchecked....on fiscal grounds, he is the epitome of the collapse of intelligent conservatism in the Republican Party....
But because of his free trade-bashing, Hunter is even worse.... All one has to do is look at Europe to see the folly of "fair trade." Hunter doesn't care. Demagoguery in a time of economic anxiety pays political dividends....

Game. Set. Match.
It's only the social conservatism that matters here.
That's funny, look at his voting record.
This author is sounds like his panties are on fire.
Getting screwed in a trade is not the same as free trade.
You trust this clown or do you think there might be more to the story?
bump!
IIRC, eee is a rudy supporter.
Hunter is beginning to make the Republican big boys and their corporate masters nervous. They are hunting any way they can to make the social cons shut up and just vote for who they direct them too.
George Will supports kissing cousins, huh?
That's OK. But he's also smart enough to realize that some hacks opinion is just that. I noticed a dearth of facts in his article.
I like free trade, just not this conscience free trade of the so called moderates.
George Will's a jerk. lol
If we're going to start posting threads using the blogs of unknowns there are a whole bunch of Rudy threads I should be starting.
George Will gets his paycheck from the limousine Leftist media establishment...
F-[add appropriate three letters here] George Will...
I don't know about that. Some on here seem to be developing HDS. Especially the rudyphiles.
Unlike most of the sycophantic Duncan Hunter support on Free Republic, there are those of us who have lived in San Diego long enough to be quite familiar with his record.
It is an embarrassment to watch so many people here get behind Hunter on the basis of a few popular statements about his 'conservatism'.
I would encourage every FReeper to do a bit of homework on their own, because if they do, they will regret their Hunter support. Hunter is great for the Military, the Borders and Abortion, but the man has spending problems, and enough dirt in his background to choke a maggot.
Peel the onion on Hunter, and breath the fumes.
This is not George Wills article. It's some lib commenting on George WIll's article.
Duncan Hunter would be perfect except for two things. He's dead wrong about trade, and he's completely unknown outside of this forum, his district, and Washington DC where he's now a minority congressman without the power to do squat.
