Excerpt -

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Friday after Microsoft Corp. tempered revenue expectations for the Vista computer operating system.

~ snip ~

Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Balmer said late on Thursday analysts' revenue forecasts for Vista were "overly aggressive." Shares of Microsoft were the top-weighted decliner on the Dow, S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100.

"Microsoft can't catch a break. We're at 20 million shares in volume already - that's not your grandmother trading," said Cummins Catherwood, managing director at Rutherford, Brown & Catherwood in Philadelphia. "Those hedge funds can't deal with disappointment. They can't afford to wait for the impact to dissipate."

The Dow Jones industrial average (DJI:^DJI - News) was down 7.93 points, or 0.06 percent,

0.06 percent

Some "stumble".

So a blistering drop from $28.9 per share to $28.7 per share has the market in a tizzy?

I'm in complete awe of what passes for wisdom in the markets today.

Vista has been a major disappointment to the computer world, a warmed-over version of XP really with an overly high price tag, slower performance, technically obsolete out of the box (compared to other op systems like Mac OS X) given the amount of time, and where the state of the art is in operation systems....and the list goes on.

Add to this the accelerated arrogance of MS, their license agreement (EULA) is typically 'written for MS'....the whole ball of wax is weak, at best.

The only reason that MS is selling any VISTAS' at all is because manufacturers and sellers of PC's are installing it on new PCs.

Word is already on the street that VISTA is a spyware/intrusive piece of garbage. Why MS thought letting the NSA work on their code was going to help them is beyond me.

The Mac commercials have also done some damage IMO.

"About to post on FR, accept or decline"

'Accept'

Regardless of any spyware issues, I keep reading and reading and haven't found a compelling reason why Vista is a great innovation. Even saw a written interview w Bill Gates in which he had trouble answering why someone should buy Vista. After saying they should try it for a few hours, he was mentioning better security and a better search program. whoopdy doo.

seemed very telling that he was more conversant on how MS is already working on a new system for 5 years from now, and how they will get all the feedback from users on why Vista isn't good enough. That's actually what he said.

Those hedge funds can't deal with disappointment. They can't afford to wait for the impact to dissipate.

If this is really true (we don't know), then what this really means is that hedge funds are over leveraged and can be whacked by just one company's problems.

Gold passes as wisdom and propaganda.... just recognize the fools and go on with normal business.

Alright, all you people yapping about Vista probably haven't even used it, so please, enough unless you've actually used it and can back up this yapping.

I run it at home, and made my decision from beta testing it and reviews from credible sources like Tom's Hardware, not from the usual print media and those in computer circles with an ax to grind.

And for those touting Mac OS X, you might want to take a look at 30 days of bugs for Mac OS X, that also has huge gaping security holes.

Microsoft's stock will be fine as will the company, everyone seems to forget that the reason everyone has a computer at home now, and that the technology that abounds now wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Microsoft and IBM creating inexpensive home PC's and operating systems.

None the less, everyone complaining reminds me of the people from Atlas Shrugged that harassed the producers but gave nothing to society themselves...

It was a 2.5 percent drop in one hour. But they got a little "dead-cat bounce" after that.

of course. with the MSM (and a R president), the DOW "plunges" 50 points, and "edges higher" 150

Enthusiasts, like myself, are not even touching it. Many key magazine writers are putting it down heavily. It is still amazing to see what MS, supposedly a maker of operating systems, took five years to turn out. Very lackluster. Frankly, I think MS is their own worst enemy.
