CERSKA, Bosnia (Reuters) -- The 18-year-old gunman who shot five people to death in a Salt Lake City, Utah, shopping mall was a survivor of the siege that ended in the Srebrenica massacre of 8,000 Muslims in Bosnia's 1992-95 war, a cousin said on Wednesday.
Sulejman Talovic, who was killed by police after Monday's shooting spree in which he also wounded four people, fled his village with his family during the Bosnia war to Srebrenica, a U.N.-protected enclave, Redzo Talovic said.
They spent two years in the town, during which Bosnian Serb forces besieged the enclave and Talovic's grandfather was killed by shellfire, Redzo Talovic said.

"Do I have this straight?"
You couldn't have been more right. But why are you so late in realizing our country's contribution to the spread of Islam?
"Hats off to your BIL and SIL for helping our enemies."
Nope, my hat's off to them for possibly saving the life of a fine person.
She certainly didn't pray five times a day and she wore western clothes. Just as with Christianity, different sects believe different things and conduct their lives in different ways.
I see your point, but don't know about the assertion. I think they manipulate the English language quite well as part of their propaganda.
Much about Bosnian treatment of our troops was not told by the media. All around, this was a misguided mission.
Germany was only too happy to join in the bombing of Serbia. Settling old scores against those who sided against the nazi's and with the US in the second world war.
The media helped slick willie perpetrate the hoax.
The media would have us all forget the atrocities we committed on behalf of the world's enemies.
Saddam Is Sending Money to Families of Suicide Bombers, Saturday, July 27, 2002
Other Arab states pledge millions each year to help the Palestinians, but the money never shows up. When Saddam Hussein promises them money, he deliversIn two years, the Iraqi leader has signed more than 500 checks for a total of $20 million distributed at ceremonies attended by top officials from Arafat's Palestinian Authority
Speakers at these gatherings deliver blistering attacks against President Bush and America for supporting Israel.
Shehade said the Palestinian people will rally around Hussein if the U.S. ever attacks him.
"Our support will be for Saddam," Shehade said. "He is for us a symbol, a father, and a leader because he is the one who feels our pain."
Saddam hopes that pain expressed for Palestinians throughout the Arab streets will turn into support for him if America strikes Iraq. Thats what hes banking on.
Well, no, but a Hmong refugee shot up random people in 2004.
The media rushes to provide a defense - albeit posthumously - for a mass murderer, who happens to be a member of a politically protected class - by suggesting that, considering his background, his murderous actions were perfectly reasonable, natural, and predictable. And in the process of ignoring the obvious question (if his actions were so expected, why didn't the same media alert someone to expect them?), they provide another disturbing bit of knowledge.
Those who experience childhood in the crucible of violence, ethnic hatred, mass murder and murderous intentions, and the constant vision of death all around can be expected to blow a fuse and lash out violently at masses themselves. If this applies to Bosnians, wouldn't it also apply to, say, muslim youth growing up in the hell of the Middle East, where the very same conditions exist every day? Isn't this mass murder something, then, we can expect from muslims from the arab world as well, who spent their formative years being similarly conditioned?
Unfortunately, the tyranny of political correctness, and suicidal liberal pacifism, dictate that we can only acknowledge this information in hindsight, after said youths blow up malls or buildings and lots of people. At the same time we explain that one murderer grew up in a culture in which he was virtually programmed to kill, we foretell others who will do the same, but within a phony political construct that requires us to ignore the foreknowledge, and wait for death again. God must be puzzled at His creation.
"Utah mall gunman was Srebrenica survivor, cousin says
If only the Serbs had done their job, those people in Utah would be alive today."
Your grasp of international politics is...well...somewhat lacking.
Just as being the child of someone caught in an ugly situation does NOT "excuse" ones anti-social behaviour...
Cheering on those who did the slaughtering is less than honorable.
I say that what's being overlooked in MANY of the posts on this subject is the very REAL possibility that the shooter would adhere to whatever he was taught in the home about the "old country".
There are STILL legal immigrants from various European countries that get all pissy about WWII even after we saved their butts...???
So, jumping to the conclusion that you fully understand another's background from his last name or "religion" leaves quite a BIT to be desired.
I DO think that the hidden causes here are cultural, but precisely WHAT pressures came to bear we may NEVER know.
It was a civil war, the slaughtering was taking place on all sides, but the Serbs were in particular singled out.
All I'm saying is that we're NOT going to "fix" anything with hatred.
It appeared to ME that you were being overly-glib in your response to the tragedy.
While I DO think it's necessary to wage war on Islamofascism, I DON'T find war a "desirable" thing, let alone ethnic cleansing...
USN Veteran 1967-70
The shooter is like the Bosnian/Muslim version of "Hannibal Rising". It would be interesting to know if this kid saw this movie recently before his murderous rampage.
Not only do muslims lie to aid in jihad and conquest (this is called taqqia), but the "Bosnian" muslims are the WORLD CHAMPIONS of taqqia!!!!
After all, they convinced most of the world that their radical islamist fuehrer Izetbegovic was a "moderate", and that the Serbs "invaded" their "country" to commit "genocide". (In reality, the Serbs had lived there for centuries, and were defending their homes, their lives, and their Christian faith.)
And CNN is pretty good at disseminating New World Order and islamist lies and propaganda as well! CNN is the Amanpour network, after all!!!!
Yes, but you can really draw a line between the Bible believing Christians who beleive in salvation through Christ and the cults. You can't draw the same line between muslims, because their holiest book teaches it is right to lie and show a false side to infidels like you and me. Despite what you think of her, it could all easily have been a lie. She could have been going to a hate-spewing mosque hearing vile anti-American things in her native tongue, and you would NEVER know. WAKE UP AMERICA!
Too bad he survived.
Most of the Moslem soldiers there did survive by running for it as soon as they heard the Serbs had enough of them beheading defenseless farmers.
