Hunter Polls Strong Among Conservative Netroots
The Post Chronicle ^ | 2-14-07 | Post Chronicle

Republican Presidential candidate Duncan Hunter (R-CA) received an internet today when the results of an internet poll were announced.  The poll, administered by Rightwingnews.com, placed Hunter near the top in overall favorability, and near the bottom in un-favorability among conservative bloggers.

A total of 230 right-of-center bloggers were asked to rank their most and least favorable candidates.  Hunter was second in over popularity with a net score of 32, outranked only by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich's score of 38.5.  Gingrich has yet to announce his intentions in the race.  According to Right Wing News spokesman John Hawkins, the results were based on the blogger's choice as to the candidate they felt is genuinely conservative in belief and policy.  Hunter has often been described as the true Reagan Republican.  His views on a strong national defense; a double fence on the U.S. Mexican border with no amnesty for illegals; a fair trade police with foreign governments, and strong support for our forces places him at the top of the true conservative's list.

Hunter was pleased with the results of the poll.  "It indicates that the conservative bloggers that were polled view me as the candidate with a genuine conservative agenda," said Hunter.  "My experience as Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, and my 26-years in the House of Representatives gives me the experience needed to tackle the tough problems facing our country today.  I look forward to serving America as their President," added the California native.

Here is the order of the candidates if you subtract their least desired numbers from their most desired numbers:

Gingrich +52 / -13.5 = 38.5
Duncan Hunter +35.5 / -3.5 = 32
Mitt Romney 43 / -11.5 = 31.5
Rudy Giuliani +45 / -17 = 28
Tommy Thompson 15.5 / -9 = 6.5
Mike Huckabee +14 / -12 = 2
Tom Tancredo 31.5 / -30 = 1.5
Jim Gilmore +5.5 / -5.5 = 0
John Cox +4 / -4.5 = -.5
Sam Brownback +20 / -21 = -1
Ron Paul 8.5 / -10.5 = -2
John McCain +19 / -60.5 = -41.5
George Pataki 1 / -49 = -48
Chuck Hagel +1 / -64 = -63

That's great! Boy, would I like to see a Hunter/Gingrich ticket in 2008. Most of the true conservatives I talk to are tired of having to vote for liberals. We're ready for a change!

GO DUNCAN HUNTER!!!

Just seeing McLame & Hagel's negative rating is pleasing in itself ;)

My number one issue is the war. I want someone who knows we are at war, and is prepared to wage it aggressively, and is prepared to lead the country through. That means outspokenly explaining it and defending it.

The list of people prepared to do that is pretty short.

McCain, a non-starter.

Gingrich, our philosopher king.

Giuliani, our warrior Gore.

And Hunter, maybe.

I would vote for any of the latter three in November if it comes to it (forget McCain), but I'm leaning toward Hunter in the primary, if he is prepared to speak boldly on the war. I want bold. I don't want a Republican who will try to triangulate his way into office. I want bold.

That settles it, I'm not voting for Chuck Hagel. Check his numbers out---he's in the basement.

Newt has more baggage than a bell hop at the Ritz-Carlton. There is no way he is electable.

Using your logic:

Duncan Hunter is about as recognizable as a Mexican in Guadalajara. There's no way he's electable.

"expect to be excoriated"

He just needs name and value recognition. He's what we NEED right now.

I really do wish he'd declare.

One concern, though:

Newt polls beneath Rudy 33%-22% among "just Republicans" in CA, for example. If Newt gets within a couple of points, would Duncan Hunter fans be unmovable, even in the face of Rudy?

Just wondering. I'll take either Duncan or Newt, but my vote in any situation goes to whoever can beat Rudy.

"Newt has more baggage than a bell hop at the Ritz-Carlton. There is no way he is electable."

Two divorces? So does Rudy and McCain also has one. This whole "Newt has baggage" argument is getting lame - poll after poll is showing Newt doing well with voters (and he hasn't even declared!). It's obvious that many conservatives are willing to put aside his decade-old divorces for some real conservative leadership & results.
