DURHAM, N.H. -- In his first stumble, White House hopeful Barack Obama on Monday took back words from the day before, when he said the lives of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq were "wasted."
Following his Springfield launch on Saturday, Obama wrapped up a three-day swing in the key primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire, ending at a University of New Hampshire rally where he assailed the "trivialization of politics" where "it is all about who makes a gaffe."
In this case, that would be Obama, the Illinois Democrat.
During his first press conference as a presidential candidate at Iowa State University, Obama, discussing his opposition to the Iraq war, said the war "should have never been authorized, and should have never been waged, and on which we've now spent $400 billion, and have seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted.''
He immediately realized he made a mistake, he later told a reporter. Even the most severe war critics in Congress have been very careful to praise U.S. troops and say nothing that could upset mourning families.
Reaches out to families Obama, in an interview with the Des Moines Register right afterward, told the paper, ''I was actually upset with myself when I said that, because I never use that term,'' he said. ''Their sacrifices are never wasted. . . . What I meant to say was those sacrifices have not been honored by the same attention to strategy, diplomacy and honesty on the part of civilian leadership that would give them a clear mission." By Monday, reporters covering Obama making his first visit as a presidential candidate in New Hampshire, asked Obama, campaigning in a Nashua home, if military families deserved an apology.
"Well as I said, it is not at all what I intended to say, and I would absolutely apologize if any of them felt that in some ways it had diminished the enormous courage and sacrifice that they'd shown. You know, and if you look at all the other speeches that I've made, that is always the starting point in my view of this war.''
At a rally in the gym at the university here -- not quite the stemwinder Obama delivered for University of Illinois at Chicago students on Sunday night -- Obama made a similar point about the Iraq war deaths, talking about the need to "bring that war to a close."
Those who died, he said, were "extraordinarily brave soldiers."

Fox&Friends is too busy with another day of Anna Nichole Smith to report much on Obama.
Today the topic is about her hubby/bf Stearn crying about their wedding plans.
This is now day 6 of Anna and related on FoxNews.
FoxNews is turning into little more than a tabloid trash channel.
Osama obama, Does anyone think this guy is not a leftist dumbass? I know, pandering to his dumbass base.Run osama run. Tripantripantrip. Daffy duck
Under pressure, the truth will squirt out.
Obama is not qualified to be President or Commander in Chief. But, because taking responsibility and fulfilling promises is anathema to Dimocrats, few Dims realize that.
Nice. And to think that John Howard is getting roasted for telling it like it is with Obama and the rest of the 'Rats.
I hate having to agree with Dumbo, but in this particular case he's right.
I've been reading the SAS Survival Guide. Makes the Tom Brown, Jr. series sound like Girl Scout guides. Truly an excellent handbook.
"stick a fork in him, he's done!
The little bastard has been done ever since he entered public office. But, rest assured that the many enemies of America will be voting for this buffon as the country continues to import anti-American, anti-Western Culture elements through legal and illegal immigration. Soon - very soon - the Commander in Chief will no longer have a unanymous consent from the people to wage war or to preserve the union.
We're slipping and sliding into third worldism and the people are fearfully asking what's happening to our country or who the enemy is. We all know who the enemy of America and Christianity is, but are fearful to point the finger at it. As Americans continue to lie to themselves and their Christian brother, the enemy of Christianity congratulates itself at the success of another corrupted and destroyed Christian society. If we continue to lie to ourselves, then we deserve what is to become of America.

Actually, he sounds just like Cindy Sheehan
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Like I've said all along......
We really don't need to campaign. All we really need to do is set back and let these traitors talk and dig themselves a hole. Their true colors will shine eventually.
...But that was too long for my speech - So I just said 'wasted' instead.
I also worked with a number of Aussie intel types, who are top notch professionals. The Aussies don't have a big military, but their guys are pros, and it was great working with them.
Regarding the John Howard comment, he should have said "John Howard and I have a difference of opinion and if I am fortunate enough to become President, hopefully, he and I can work through this." That would have been class. But he ends up insulting not only John Howard but the Australian people as well.
Same with the Dixie Chicks. When the win their award, they have to make some snide remark about all the televisions now being turned off. No class. No grace. Either winning or losing.
obama is osama's secret weapon. obama is a muzzie born and raised, sharia law loving enemy of Freedom and Democracy!
LLS
And H*****y just plain loathes them.
He immediatly realized he made a mistake,
and said to his msm handlers.....
'What do I do now?'
