Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, still basking in his can-do post-Sept. 11 image, got a rousing welcome yesterday from Republican activists searching for a presidential candidate who can win in California.
No Republican presidential candidate has carried California since the elder George Bush did in 1988, and no one has even run a competitive race in the increasingly Democratic-leaning state since then.
Republicans are hopeful they have prospects in the large 2008 field who can reverse the trend by combining liberal and conservative stands that has proven so successful for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The popularity of the governor shows that you can take the positions that he holds and win in California, said Duf Sundheim, outgoing Republican state chairman. I think Giuliani has the same opportunity.
As for Giuliani, backers say his record on reducing crime and taxes in New York should give conservatives plenty to like. He was introduced to the convention yesterday by businessman Bill Simon, the 2002 Republican nominee for California governor who once worked under Giuliani in the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York.
Simon said that as mayor, Giuliani cut taxes 23 times and reduced the city's murder rate by 67 percent. That is a record that as a conservative Republican, I can heartily endorse, he said.

Did you find anything to support that allegation yet?
Yes, we disagree GREATLY; not only about Rudy,it appears.
Paul is a KOOK and it's a pity that you are unwilling and/or unable to see that.
You nail it!
What police force does Rudy have as President to go grab your gun? Can he go tell the local cops to go grab your gun? Certainly not. Use the FBI? The Army and ursurp state's rights? Not likely. Assuming Rudy is the devil and is a gun grabber, doesn't he have to get Congress to usurp state's rights along with him before he starts grabbing your firearm? Pass the GUN ENHANCEMENT ACT OF 2009?
Good luck getting that legislation past this Congress with Nasty Nancy at the helm more or less the next one. There are more than enough NON-GUN GRABBING Blue Democrat Congresscritters to stem the tide in the House right now and if Rudy wins California, they'll be even more Republicans in the House too.
This whole purported Rudy is going to take your gun rhetoric is laughable.
Very nice post, Mia.
I would be interested in knowing just who was in possession of those 100,000 (unregistered) guns.
"If Rudy promises no new federal gun laws and conservative judges, and runs on fiscal issues and foreign policy, he seems an awfully lot like the type of Republican who wins in Michigan to me."
Most of the Republican base here are hunters and shooters. They will get mailers from the gun groups showing Rudy's record and statements on guns. They will not vote for him here.
Great article.............thanks for the link. :-)
Giuliani may (or may not with his scandals) be really electable, but he WILL NOT win the state of New York and it's electoral votes.
NapkinUser, there's no indication on your FR homepage indicating where you live.
Are you a NY resident?
What do you know about NY? Is your knowlege of New York and its residents based on personal knowledge, experience, and fact, or merely hearsay and conjecture?
Inquiring minds would like to know.
I'll take low-life criminals for $200 please Alex.
Contrary to popular belief, a law abiding citizen can get a firearm in New York City.
LOL!
Funny about that........
"It's late and his CONSERVATIVE record has been posted, repeatedly. You REFUSE to see/accept any of it. Pity that............because I am NOT going to waste my time on you.
But tell me, why are tax cuts, cutting the size of government, reducing the welfare rolls by 60%, vouchers, fully supporting the WOT, and fighting crime no longer considered, by some, to be CONSERVATVE?"
So why should I waste my time on you?
But since I'm so nice, the tax cuts were modest, he added 15,000 teacher jobs, but yes, he did clean up NYC, but that's not enough. I'm looking for a candidate MORE conservative than President Bush - not LESS.
And SOCIAL CONSERVATIVE issues are the most important conservative issues of all:

As Delivered
Thank you very much for inviting me to say a few words of welcome. This event shows that people of different political parties and different political thinking can unite in support of choice. In doing so, we are upholding a distinguished tradition that began in our city starting with the work of Margaret Sanger and the movement for reproductive freedom that began in the early decades of the 20th century.

Rudy even points to Margaret Sanger, as if that's something to be proud of.
Terrific post!
A permit for a shotgun maybe. Nothing else. Giuliani ended the handgun permits for law abiding citizens.
Since Rudy did NOT take away everyone's guns in N.Y.C.; you lose again!
You thing that gang bangers and thugs and convicted felons should be allowed to have guns, do you?
"What police force does Rudy have as President to go grab your gun?"
With Rudy's mentality, he will do what he can to go against the 2nd amendment, and that includes picking liberal judges, DESPITE of what he says.
Did you know that politicians often break their campaign promises?
