Texas students sue to carry purses decorated with Confederate flag

DALLAS - Two Burleson High School students filed a federal lawsuit Friday against the Burleson school district over a year-old incident in which school officials denied them the right to carry Confederate battle flag purses to school.
Attorneys for the Southern Legal Resource Center prepared the lawsuit on behalf of Aubrie Michelle McAllum and Ashley Paige Thomas, who contend their constitutional rights were violated in January 2006 when school officials prevented them from carrying their new purses to school.
The teens were not punished for carrying the purses, but were sent home when they refused to turn them over. They were also told not to bring them to school again. The next day, when they returned to school with the purses wrapped in black cloth marked "censored," they were again sent home.
The lawsuit alleges that the district selectively applied the dress code by singling out the Confederate flag for exclusion while permitting students to wear other controversial symbols, including the swastika.
After a lengthy appeals process in which the girls' attorneys attempted to get the district to lift the ban on the flag attire, the federal lawsuit is seeking a declaration that the girls' rights were violated, removal of any disciplinary action from their records and unspecified monetary damages.
The suit names high school principal Paul Cash as well as school trustees.

What is interesting to me about all this is why the left wing elites are so obsessed with destroying the noble legacy of the confederacy. And no I am not talking about slavery. Let us get this well worn canard out of the way by conceding a reluctance to abolish slavery as the
ignoble legacy of the confederacy.
Serious defenders of the legacy of the south argue persuasively in my opinion that the Confederates were the true defenders of the original vision the founders had for the nation. The northern mercantilists were more than willing to toss aside the strictures of limited government in general and the Constitution in particular in order to better service their own interests. And given the Leviathan state we face today it is hard to argue that the Confederates were not correct to oppose this.
There was a tension in the Republic from the beginning between those who believed in the benefits of collective authority and those who feared most its tendancy to devolve into tyranny. The right of secession proved to be the wedge issue that those favoring the supremacy of the state over the Constitution used successfully to decide the issue in their favor for both them and their posterity.
By destroying the legacy of the south and obfiscating the true nature of the War Between the States the left has robbed future generations of Americans (north and south) of an important part of their history. It is a vile irony indeed that the War between the States should now be seen exclusively as a war about the enslavement of the blacks when in fact it was a war over the true definition of freedom for white and black alike.

Thanks for supporting us Texans. Now do you have advice on how we can get rid of our socialist RINO governor? You're quite welcome! Unfortunately, a Washington State resident such as myself isn't going to be any sort of authority on getting good people into office. We have a fraudulently-placed Governor, a completely corrupt Department of Elections, and some of the most embarrassing officials in the entire Nation here, including but not limited to "Baghdad Jim" McDermott, Patty "Osama isn't so bad" Murray" and many others. I do my best to support good, sane candidates every election, but every time the good guys are steamrolled by the Marxist hysterics here. "sigh"

Now do you have advice on how we can get rid of our socialist RINO governor? Let the Dims recount the votes a half dozen times?

"Let the Dims recount the votes a half dozen times?" I believe it was Stalin who said,
It is not who votes that counts but who counts the votes

An Australian cowboy hat? Okay, as long as it's not flap-up on one side! LOL!
Resistols are lower cost than Stetson's, I think. Don't know, up there. You have plenty cowboys so you should have hats. Rodeo is going on here. Big deal. $1M purse. We were voted best rodeo this year.
I should probably tell you that we don't wear our cowboy hats everyday. And we don't all of us have oil wells, either! ;o)

There are lots of books, maybe even many in that school library, that have the Confederate flag on the cover. Kids ought to carry those around the school all day long.

Amen brother!
It's interesting how that whole 10th amendment thingy just vaporized in the aftermath of the civil war.
The wrong side won the civil war.

I think it's interesting and disturbing that the best recourse they saw was to sue.
Another generation would have insisted on being physically removed from the school.
Still another generation would have antagonized to provoke a real confrontation in defending their rights.

An Australian cowboy hat? Okay, as long as it's not flap-up on one side! LOL! No, it's pretty much a standard-looking cowboy hat :-)

Thanks! I love the rodeo and go to the events around here as often as I can.

I apologize, I didn't mean to invoke a caricature. I only wanted to show respect to the State. :-) Everyone that I've ever met who is from Texas has been EXCEPTIONALLY polite and courteous, and they were never wearing hats in my presence. I'll make sure to only wear it to the rodeo unless any Texans advise otherwise :-)

Strange, they don't mention the point made in this more recent article, about the school allowing swastikas.......

These school administrators have just messed up. You don't mess with a girl's purse...ever.

This is America, we should be able to wear/carry whatever the h we want to. Also, if the white boys that go to Tarleton State want to have a black rap party, they should be able to. We are free in America. I'm sick of all this.
