Do Vanity Candidates Really Have a Chance? (Michael Medved)

Two days ago, in blogging about the abortion records of the serious GOP Presidential prospects (McCain, Giuliani, Romney), I provoked a great deal of anger by writing off the other current contenders (Huckabee, Brownback, Tancredo, Ron Paul, Gilmore, Thompson, Duncan Hunter) as "lesser" candidates who stand no realistic chance of winning primaries or grabbing the nomination. No matter how much you may admire these people, their candidacies are irrelevant more a bid for attention, or a preparation for future races, than a realistic bid for power...
When, in the last 60 years of Presidential politics, did any obscure underdog manage to defy the odds and win the nomination of the Republican Party?...

Did you know that Alan Keyes was once dubbed "Harold Stassen on steroids"? :)

Hunter's biggest problem is his speaking ability. He is about as exciting to watch as a National Geographic special on the mating habits of worms.

I saw it. It didn't get much press here and was quickly buried. One must consider the current climate here to understand why.

It is a copy and paste of the results. I worded the poll. You can find it by clicking on polls in the lower right hand corner of the screen if you are on the news-activism page.

Thank you for pointing it out and I think it ought ot be unburied.

My recollection is that Dean was considered dead meat two to three weeks before the Iowa primary. He just seemed too controversial, chatting about repealing all the tax cuts, etc.

The fact that he's boring is a problem. That and the fact that he's anti-free-trade, which not only turns away votes, but turns away TONS of donars, and the fact that he's spent most of his adult life in Congress, and the fact that he hasn't run a real race since 1980, and has basically been a backbencher who's board.
Other then that, he's pretty good.

A51 and PKM, do you remember this poll?
To: Torie
Untrue. There was some people predicting a Dean collapse, but not many. It wasn't till a day or two before the caucuses that a lot of people started to wonder if previous predictions might have been wrong.
To: Torie
That wasn't my recollection. But, hey, I'm getting old.

So, Medved's argument must be "Vanity Candidates Don't Stand a Chance Unless They're Liberals" or more simply stated, "Conservative "vanity" Candidates don't Stand a Chance".
I hope he is wrong because, if true, we are looking at a Dhimmicrat winning in '08.
I had to laugh at the poster who claimed that we had reduced ourselves to (somehow odious) populism, when the exact opposite has occurred. Increasingly, the Republican party, in the form of the RNC, has insisted on calling all of the shots, and has all but ignored the voices of those they serve (you & me). Medved proves my contention when he points out that both Reagan and Dole had to submit to the process three times (respectively) before they received the official nomination.
So who made "Rudy McRomney" (the disparaging term coined by "eat their own" conservatives) the only viable choices? Although Medved doesn't use the threadbare term gravitas, he certainly implies that only those three have it. Medved also doesn't claim a champion, but I suspect from his comments he favors Giuliani. From what I've seen it is the drive-by media who decided that we would have to settle for "Rudy McRomney". Pick your poison?
Another poster berates us for jumping on Presidential politics too early. I might remind him that there were already discussions raging on 11/7/06, but I understand where he was shooting from. My point is that if you watched the news this morning and saw the drive-by media fawning over osama obama's announcement, You'd realize that, ready or not, here it comes!

Hunter's biggest problem is his speaking ability. I disagree. Have you seen him on CNN (slammig Wolf Blitzer on Iraq) or his Guantanamo-meal presentation? He is funny, straightforward and articulate. Not boring at all.
BTW President Bush isn't the best in rhetorics, too. He was elected twice... and Kerry was so "articulate, educated and well-spoken".

It's a shame there are so many cowards in the GOP these days who turn and run for the safety of a popularity contest rather than fight for the best candidate.
