ALPINE – A man was struck and killed Thursday night as he tried to run across the freeway after being stopped by Border Patrol agents for suspicion of alien smuggling, authorities said.
The 32-year-old victim died at the scene. The county Medical Examiner's office said it would release the man's name after his relatives are notified.
The California Highway Patrol said the man was driving a Chevy Astro van west on Interstate 8 west of Tavern Road when a Border Patrol agent pulled him over around 10:24 p.m.
As the agent was getting out of his car, he saw passengers get out of the van and run away from it. The driver also go out and ran to the front of the vehicle, the CHP said.
The agent began to chase the driver on the right-hand shoulder and the man tried to run across the freeway but was struck by an SUV traveling about 70 mph in the left-hand lane of westbound I-8.
The freeway was shut down for nearly two hours after the fatal crash. The CHP said it is investigating the collision.
I love a happy ending.

Sutton screwed the pooch on the overly agressive prosecution of the 2 in texas. But apparently, there have been more than a few shootings of illegals that are never even reprimanded. I like that.
You might be right. Sutton might have a very difficult time in the future trying to convict law enforcement officers in alien cases.

If there is malfeasance on his part, which I'm not sure there is, he should be the one behind bars.

Yes, what people fail to realize is that some poor civilian is going to be traumatized for the rest of their lives for having killed an individual. While a few people would just hose off the front bumper and call it a day, if we look at it honestly, non of us would want to replay that seen over and over when we put our heads on our pillow each night.
I hope the driver and people who witnessed this incident (including the BP agent) do not take it to hard.
Yes, the driver, the agent... and the aliens. I've been on the 5 freeway north of Oceanside when a group of about 10 aliens were fleeing across the freeway. It creates a pretty dangerous situation as cars try to navigate.
No matter how much I want the borders controlled and the incentives reduced that keep drawing more people, I certainly don't want to see any of them hit or killed on a freeway.
