WASHINGTON -- Eager to head off Rudolph Giuliani's recent gains in the polls, conservative activists this week strengthened their attacks, with some promising to step up their efforts on the Internet, talk radio and "below-the-radar" to discredit him going forward.
They are taking direct aim at one of Giuliani's strongest selling points, at least to some backers -- that he is the Republicans' best hope of stopping Hillary Rodham Clinton.
These critics argue that his nomination would prompt a conservative third-party candidate to join the race and split the GOP vote, clearing the way for Clinton's election.
"There's no way conservatives could stand for Giuliani becoming the Republican nominee," said Richard Viguerie, one of the founders of the modern conservative movement. "I guarantee whoever the Democrats nominate would be the next president."

He backed off his earlier opposition to a ban on the medical procedure referred to as partial-birth abortion, and expressed support for gun owners' Second Amendment rights, even though as New York mayor he sued gun manufacturers and argued that more guns lead to more crime.

So social conservatives -- for whom Giuliani's support for abortion rights, gun control and gay unions are anathema -- are speaking out. Some say they would use the tools at their disposal to tell voters about Giuliani's social stances.
Viguerie, a direct-mail pioneer, argued it no longer takes millions of mailings to make the case, thanks to talk radio, the Internet and other "below-the-radar" media.
Tony Perkins, head of the conservative Family Research Council, told a conservative radio host that Giuliani's positions are "far outside the mainstream of conservative thought ... Once people focus on this election and the candidates, Giuliani's lead will diminish."

I won't vote for ANYONE who supports abortion. Some things are just not worth compromising, regardless of what others might think. If they feel lucky, the RNC can nominate Rudy and jettison the Christian right. That's certainly their right...just as it's mine to not vote for him.
From your keyboard to God's ears.
Those who are looking for and claim that they will only vote for someone with whom they agree 99.99999999999999999999999% of the time. Usually, such a candidate doesn't exist, so they settle for one slightly less appealing, who comes in at 97.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% on their scale, but has absolutely NO chance of ever winning an election.
I like Rudy as a person and my NYC roots go back to the 1600s and my great great grandfather was a State Sen. from Brooklyn at the time of Teddy Roosevelt.
All my relatives from these folks are voting for Hunter and I am.
Thats right.... nopardons gets petty. So whats new! LMBO
That would be RINOs. They kowtow to Democrats and the media, aping their beliefs instead of standing strong for conservative REPUBLICAN beliefs, forever sure that someday, someday, they'll get the love and respect they need and deserve from the enemies of the republic. And they are always wrong.
"Methinks thou doth protest too much."

>>I watched Hannity and Colmes tonight and Sean seems to have fallen in love with Rudy.
He's also given too much time to Mr. Potato Head.
Not yet we don't. I can tell you, it won't be Rudy.
Doubtful. Very doubtful. But, he would have better dresses for the balls.
Spot On. Your perspective is refreshing, FRiend.
PJ O'Rourke calls them (well-represented on FR) the "Hairshirts".
You've made your acid indigestion (or at least excess bile) regarding Rudy clear...I have zero intention of wasting words on you, as you will completely ignore anything anyone else has to say. Furthermore, you will completely ignore what experience has to say. The "unrealistic" wing sat at home in 2006. How is Speaker Pelosi working out for you? I can tell you how it looks from this side from the Atlantic - she's making America look weak, divided and made the European Left crow with joy. The buzzards are circling, ready to pick further at the carcass of America's reputation. Now, you can either persist in ignoring what experience tells you, which is an un-conservative thing to do - or you can prevent a power mad harpy like Hillary or a neophyte like Obama taking control.
Rudy may annoy you, as I've said, but Hillary will get you killed. It won't be immediately obvious, but after a few gaffes, the rest of the world will look at a President Hillary and think the Americans have lost their senses.

Then, there are the announced candidates who they soon over, but haves NO chance, not a one, of lasting through next February; if that.
And finally, the group that is pining for some great white hope to come out of the blue and save them and the GOP, but can never come up with a name to attach to that fairy tale, are beyond delusional!
Politics has changed here, whether we like it or not. It not only takes mind boggling amounts of money to even launch a so so campaign, but because so many primaries are now front loaded, if someone isn't off and running and hitting the hustings right now, they will never be able to catch up.
There is a humongous difference between being a conservative purist and a conservative who does not support a Guilianni Presidential candidacy. It isn't even close.
I prefer the old FR term UNAPPEASEABLES, myself, but I like your terms a lot.
Simply sublime.
