WASHINGTON -- Eager to head off Rudolph Giuliani's recent gains in the polls, conservative activists this week strengthened their attacks, with some promising to step up their efforts on the Internet, talk radio and "below-the-radar" to discredit him going forward.
They are taking direct aim at one of Giuliani's strongest selling points, at least to some backers -- that he is the Republicans' best hope of stopping Hillary Rodham Clinton.
These critics argue that his nomination would prompt a conservative third-party candidate to join the race and split the GOP vote, clearing the way for Clinton's election.
"There's no way conservatives could stand for Giuliani becoming the Republican nominee," said Richard Viguerie, one of the founders of the modern conservative movement. "I guarantee whoever the Democrats nominate would be the next president."

He backed off his earlier opposition to a ban on the medical procedure referred to as partial-birth abortion, and expressed support for gun owners' Second Amendment rights, even though as New York mayor he sued gun manufacturers and argued that more guns lead to more crime.

So social conservatives -- for whom Giuliani's support for abortion rights, gun control and gay unions are anathema -- are speaking out. Some say they would use the tools at their disposal to tell voters about Giuliani's social stances.
Viguerie, a direct-mail pioneer, argued it no longer takes millions of mailings to make the case, thanks to talk radio, the Internet and other "below-the-radar" media.
Tony Perkins, head of the conservative Family Research Council, told a conservative radio host that Giuliani's positions are "far outside the mainstream of conservative thought ... Once people focus on this election and the candidates, Giuliani's lead will diminish."

Actually it will become stronger as Rudy brings back areas of the country that have left the Republican Party and some of the extreme elements on the Right go off and support Tancredo or Paul or some other wingnut.
Good post - - thanks for that.

LH
Hunter as Chairman of the Armed Services Comm is not the backbencher.
Also when you can't write his name correctly it tells me you as a purist and unappeaseable will not support the republican candidate.
Grow up.
It happens. The perfect is not the enemy of the good (Arnold, however, is making me somewhat circumspect), and half a loaf is still better than none, regardless.
Hang in there.
Unless a Supreme Court justice dies, Rudy has no effect on the first item - he has already said he would appoint judges like Roberts and Alito. The second item, he has no effect on at all.
The President is not a King. But then again, strange a British person has to remind you of that...but obviously the spleen is not an organ for thinking.
Ivan
You really are full of so many wrong assumptions that I don't always know where to start. So, I'll ask you a question: Where did you get the idea that I support Duncan Hunter?
Ivan
What is it? Huntin or Dunkin...sorry no one even knows his name.
After losing the House and having two Republican members go to jail I cannot think of a worse position from which to run for President in 2008 than a long-term Republican Congresscritter who was never in the leadership. Duncan Hunter has about as much chance of winning the nomination as Rachel Hunter.
Yes, it was THAT divided and vile and nasty; just a bit later into everything, than now. The garbage, posted against now President Bush and his supporters began in '99. The same people who are against Rudy, who survived the very late in the day purges, were virulently against W back then.
There were several factions...those who favored Pat Buchanan, those for Alan Keyes, and the Libertarians............all ganging up against now President Bush and his supporters.
And there were NO Mods here in '99, so you can only try to imagine what THAT was like; you'll never come close to really being able to imagine that!
Oh Lord. Being preached to by a Brit on the American Constitution. It's really too late at night for this. But, here's your answer anyway: The Court could rule that the child in the womb is a person (which they are, of course) leaving them protected by the words of the Preamble and the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. Bingo. Problem solved.
Hunter is still Chairman? Really? I thought he was replaced by a 'rat.
None of your business. But I assure you, it won't be someone who supports all of the immoral positions of the Democrat Party, and none of the important provisions of the Reagan platform of the GOP, like Rudy Giuliani.
Allen is a RINO?
I guess that Graf is a RINO too?
Should I continue? And yes, I know that I'm not naming all House members. :-)
You're drinking again, aren't you.
"My dear guests, I am Mr. Roark, your host. Welcome to Fantasy Island!!"
Oh never mind, you always blame him for EVERYTHING!
If I am, it's where RINOs like you want to bury the Grand Old Party.
