KANSAS CITY, Mo. A series of explosions has rocked the east bottoms area of Kansas City.
The explosion happened just after 2 p.m. in the area of Nicholson Avenue and Gardner. Firefighters are on scene at the Chem Central with hazardous materials crews.
Watch live coverage from NBC Action News.
Emergency crews have evacuated the area. Some residents and business in the area have experienced short power disruptions.
The chief's(KCFD) name doing the conference is Smokey Dyer. They keep flashing his name up there. I wonder if his real name is Smokey or just a nickname. LOL!
LOL!
What is Smokey saying?
He said they're just going to let it burn out. No point in trying to control it.
That they are not getting any positive readings from the EPA. Naturally, smoke inhilation is not good for you, avoid it if possible. They are not doing anything to stop this fire and are letting it burn itself out. Adding water to this fire would only cause more environmental harm. The one firetruck that is there is unmanned. They are going to get someone in there to remove it when they can. He'd rather be down there working than doing the press conference. Bless his heart! They're saying the chemicals aren't too bad but are unsure of longterm hazards.
That pic is creepy, yet gives a good description.
Are you ok Auntbee?
It's remnicient of the long-distance view of the burining towers on 9/11, which is why it's creepy, IMO.
They just announced they are going to let the fire burn out - could take anywhere from 8 hours to 72 hours.
I'm about 5 miles north of the site getting ready to head home....to St. Joe - should be safe up there, lol.
Thanks for the update.
It seems to me they are unsure of a lot of things... Hope the fire burns itself out quickly and all remain safe.
High and very important government officials have already announced that they are 100% positive that no act of terrorism was involved.
Also, super expert scientists have already verified that the cloud of black chemical smoke, while it may irrate your eyes and cause a little bleeding from your ears, it is otherwise completely unharmful.
Finally, kind-hearted and community-oriented plant officials have already conclusively determined that the explosion was caused purely by the negligence of Joe Scapegoat, a subcontractor of a subcontractor for whom the company has absolutely no legal liability -- although they have verified he was a documented U.S. citizen.
Thank you very much. Nothing more to see here. Move along.
They're not extreme, they just had a bad childhood and are misunderstood....
LOL!
Actually, our trusty weatherman is concerned about the winds dying down tonight and that cloud dropping lower and settling in the area of the fire. Yuck!
My husband just got the okay to leave. I'm so angry that they kept him there so long. Now it will take him hours to get home because of the nightmare of traffic. *sigh*
I thought it was, "I serve to live." :-)
Just fine. Thanks for asking. I'm not real close to it.
Hey! Everything is going to be okay! Going across the ticker they let us know that the riverboat casinos have not been affected! Whew!!!! We can all still gamble!! Look out penny slots, here I come! :o)
They just closed down OB's company and sent everybody home; office may or may not be open tomorrow, depends on the status of the fire.
Good to hear! :)
Isn't that somethin... It sure does look like a big deal from here.
My son called just as I got off work at 3 to tell me about the fire. Could see the smoke from Lee's Summit.
