I can think of a lot worse disasters than that...

Such as losing to the Democrats?

Rudy's nomination would facilitate that. That's why I say it would be a disaster. Rudy could not hold the party and he would not attract Reagan Dems back to the GOP column.

I'm quoting something rudy said in 1997. You imply it doesn't matter because it's 10 years ago.

The rudy supporters are crediting him for what he did back in new york 10 or more years ago. That matters, I guess.

You can't have it both ways. But rudy supporters want to.

Yeah, Regan. I remember he was so popular he could not be ignored, I don't think the drummers intended at all for him to be presidnt. So they put Bush 1 with him to sort of have some control on the situation.

Reagan was a fluke, the drummers learned, and it probably won't happen again.

Rudy was telling the gullible Hannity that he was in favor of the 2nd Amendment, "except in populous areas".

How people don't see the obvious racism of statements like that I just don't know.

If you check the 2000 and 2004 platforms, they give plenty of room to the executive. The 2000 platform doesn't really address gun rights directly, and supports enforcement of the Brady Bill, which GWB would have signed.

We defend the constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and we affirm the individual responsibility to safely use and store firearms. Because self-defense is a basic human right, we will promote training in their safe usage, especially in federal programs for women and the elderly. A Republican administration will vigorously enforce current gun laws, neglected by the Democrats, especially by prosecuting dangerous offenders identified as felons in instant background checks. Although we support background checks to ensure that guns do not fall into the hands of criminals, we oppose federal licensing of law-abiding gun owners and national gun registration as a violation of the Second Amendment and an invasion of privacy of honest citizens. Through programs like Project Exile, we will hold criminals individually accountable for their actions by strong enforcement of federal and state firearm laws, especially when guns are used in violent or drug-related crimes. With a special emphasis upon school safety, we propose the crackdown on youth violence explained elsewhere in this platform.

2004, establishes the right to own a firearm in your home for self-defence, which allows a tremendous amount of latitude.

Republicans and President Bush strongly support an individual right to own guns, which is explicitly protected by the Constitution’s Second Amendment. Our Party honors the great American tradition of hunting and we applaud efforts by the Bush Administration to make more public lands available to hunters, to increase access to hunting clinics and safety programs for children and adults, and to improve opportunitie for hunting for Americans with disabilities. We believe the Second Amendment and all of the rights guaranteed by it should enable law-abiding citizens throughout the country to own firearms in their homes for self-defense. To protect the rights and safety of law-abiding citizens, the Congress passed and President Bush signed the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act, which allows active and retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed guns in public while off-duty. Wesupport efforts by the Administration and Congress to enhance the instant background check system for gun purchases and to ensure that records of lawful transactions are destroyed in a timely manner. We applaud Congressional Republicans for seeking to stop frivolous lawsuits against firearms manufacturers, which is a transparent attempt to dprive citizens of their Second Amendment rights. We oppose federal licensing of law-abiding gun owners and national gun registration as a violation of the Second Amendment and an invasion of privacy of honest citizens.

Hopefully if he gets the nomination, he'll give some thought to who elected him.

"Rudy could not hold the party and he would not attract Reagan Dems back to the GOP column."

I'm thinking he would attract the Regan Dems....and thus would not be a disaster.

. One has to be honest about it, the crackdown on guns did drop the murder rate, one can buy the logic in that, that the situation required it. But then when the situation no longer requires it back off.

If that's true, places like DC and Chicago would have the lowest murder rates in the country. They don't. Enforcing laws, which includes getting firearms out of the hands of felons and gangbangers lowers crime.

Keeping criminals in jail lowers crime.

Adding to the rolls of "criminals" by criminalizing existing crime owners doesn't lower crime.

I'm thinking he would attract the Regan Dems....

A large portion of the Reagan Dems vote on abortion. Rick Santorum got creamed in 2006 because the Dems ran a pro-lifer. If the GOP runs a pro-choice candidate, those Dems will not be tempted out of their party. And parts of the GOP base would probably stay home.

Add the pro WOT dems.....Rudy is much better than the pull out barking dogs... and there are a fair amount of dems that see that.

"Were the gun restrictions Rudy's idea and ONLY his idea?? Was he the ONLY one behind that?"

Here is a speech Julie-Annie made to a gun control group. Read the words and decide if he sounds sincere to you.

http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/rwg/html/97a/ccc.html

My favorite quote is:

" And even as we grieve for those who lost their lives, and our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones, we may be able to find some sort of meaning in this tragedy by using it as a catalyst to revive national gun control efforts." - Rudolph Giuliani

"Commenting on this equivocation, Keane added, "You can't pretend to be a supporter of sportsmen and gun-owners in New Hampshire when you tried to sue the firearms industry out of existence in New York. Other politicians learned the hard way that sportsmen and gun-owners are a well-informed and highly motivated voting bloc. Former President Clinton in his memoirs admitted the gun issue cost Al Gore the White House, and Senator Kerry's ill-fated goose hunt cooked his presidential aspirations in 2004." "

The Rudy cheerleaders are about to face reality. Those pesky social issues they thought wouldn't matter are about to bite Rudy right in the A$$ !

This is but a small start of what is coming. ( expect some crushing news in mid March).

These are the 2 reasons I will have a VERY difficult time voting for him:

1) ABORTION
2) GUN CONTROL

These are huge......

I really hope he doesn't win the Primary. I will hold my nose and vote for him against a Dem, but it will be hard to vote for abortion.

I know all that but maybe Rudy doesn't or wasn't the one that was so zelous about it in NYC. There are a few dems in NYC city government I would guess. Don't blame Rudy for them.

I'm still waiting for an answer - was Rudy the only one responsible for the idea and execution of the gun restrictions in NYC?

I guess I just want the Rudy fans to answer one thing.

Where is he functionally different from the Democratic candidates? He has said before that he has many of the same beliefs and ideas as Hillary, whom every Rudy fan here dislikes. What is the difference?

If Rudy was a Democrat, and Hillary decided to be a Republican, would they still support Rudy?

Except that he also put the screws on long-term permit holders - and history shows that has NOTHING to do with reducing crime - to the contrary, increasing concealed-carry does.

Illinois has required registration of firearms owners for over 30 years. Chicago has banned handguns for over 30 years. Chicago's murder rate is double New Yorks, and there's no shortage of handguns for criminals. Cook County just passed an assault weapons ordinance. That'll fix the problem. Enforcement reduces crime, more laws don't.

What does "gun control efforts" mean?

Could "gun control efforts" mean getting guns out of the hands of criminals?????

What's wrong with that?

What gun control laws did Clinton get passed that are still around?
