NEWTOWN, Conn.In response to New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's filing of a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission yesterday, indicating that he would enter the 2008 presidential race as a Republican, the firearms industry's trade association, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), reminded America's sportsmen and gun-enthusiasts of the former mayor's record of hostility toward firearms and gun-owners.
"Recent remarks indicate the mayor is attempting to camouflage his record on guns a political maneuver now common for politicians seeking national office," said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel.
In June of 2000, then New York City Mayor Giuliani became the lone Republican mayor to sue members of the firearms industry as part of a wave of lawsuits that began in the late 1990's by major metropolitan cities like Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Philadelphia and San Francisco that sought to hold firearms manufactures responsible for the criminal misuse of firearms. The Giuliani lawsuit is still pending and being aggressively pursued by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Giuliani strongly opposed legislation blocking suits like the one he filed against members of the firearms industry. In 2005, President Bush signed legislation into law that barred such lawsuits after Congress, by a broad bipartisan margin, passed the bill. During the debate in Congress the Giuliani lawsuit was specifically referred to as an example of the kind of "junk" lawsuit the law is intended to stop.
"Giuliani's lawsuit may have gained him praise in Gotham, but will surely handicap him in the rest of the country, particularly during the southern primaries," predicted Keane.
More recently Giuliani's campaign has flipped-flopped on whether he continues his longstanding support for restoring the Clinton-era federal ban on some semi-automatic rifles based on cosmetic appearance. The so-called "assault weapons" ban sunset in 2004. Several studies including those by the Department of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control showed the ban had no impact on crime largely because the banned firearms were very rarely if ever used in crime. The ban had nothing to do with machine guns, which have remained heavily regulated since the early part of the last century.
According to the New York Post, Giuliani's political operative in New Hampshire, Wayne Semprini, "has been telling voters that the mayor will be an 'easy sell' - and that the ex-mayor 'satisfied' him that he won't support federal assault-weapons bans, as he has in the past." All the while Anthony Carbonetti, Giuliani's top advisor, has been telling New Yorkers "the mayor's position on this [the assault weapons ban] has not changed."
Commenting on this equivocation, Keane added, "You can't pretend to be a supporter of sportsmen and gun-owners in New Hampshire when you tried to sue the firearms industry out of existence in New York. Other politicians learned the hard way that sportsmen and gun-owners are a well-informed and highly motivated voting bloc. Former President Clinton in his memoirs admitted the gun issue cost Al Gore the White House, and Senator Kerry's ill-fated goose hunt cooked his presidential aspirations in 2004."
Formed in 1961, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) is the trade association for the firearms industry. For more information, visit www.nssf.org.
If his positions on proposals to increase federal gun control, and his views on federal versus state power, are right, then he won't be imposing executive orders increasing gun control.
We already knew that. Rudy was telling the gullible Hannity that he was in favor of the 2nd Amendment, "except in populous areas". Hannity ate it up with a spoon.
I like Rudy. He is a dynamic leader dedicated to fighting terrorism. But because of his record on gun control and abortion, I cannot vote for him. If it was only a single issue, I'd overlook. But it's not.
Correction: a plurality of republicans would crawl over broken glass to make sure a gun-grabbing, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual politican posing as a Republican was never able to represent our party. Enough said.
"Except that he also put the screws on long-term permit holders - and history shows that has NOTHING to do with reducing crime - to the contrary, increasing concealed-carry does."
I know that. Maybe we can change his mind on this?? He talked about his ability to change his mind, maybe there is nothing in his background that would have taught him the disconnect between concealed carry and gun crime. He seems like a logical person. Plus we don't know if there were zelous anti gunners that took advantage of the gun law changes in NYC to go much further than Rudy maybe wanted. That's possible.
He looks very dumb with the gun lawsuit though, I hope he realises that now.
I love the story about him thorwing arafatso out of the concert, I can amost overlook his gun problems for that kind of clear headed vision regarding America's enemies.
He mentioned the that all the pull the troops out losers forget that even if we pull out we are still at war since the islamoblowbots and their programmers have declared war on us.
And the big difference is? Not much I say.
Why can't broken glass republicans be broken glass Americans?
Mr. mayors previous positions are a very good clue he would use executive orders just like clinton did. No other way around it. This dog don't hunt.
i have this bridge for sale......
Get the news out now.
Quote below is from a gun grabber!
"We're going to have to take one step at a time, and the first step is necessarily -
- given the political realities -- going to be very modest ..
. So then we'll have to start working again to strengthen the law,
and then again to strengthen the next law, and maybe again and again.
Right now, though, we'd be satisfied not with half a loaf but with a slice.
Our ultimate goal -- total control of handguns in the United States -- is going to take time .
... The first problem is to slow down the increasing number of guns being produced and sold in this country.
The second problem is to get handguns registered.
And the final problem is to make the possession of *all* handguns and *all* handgun ammunition -
- except for the military, policemen, licensed security guards, licensed sporting clubs, and licensed gun collectors -- totally illegal."
-- Pete Shields, Chairman Emeritus, Handgun Control, Inc. ( "The New Yorker", July 26, 1976 )

The only thing I see wrong is the "guys" part. (Hillary, Feinstein, Pelosi, etc.)
Going back to the Declaration of Independence one sees some of the thinking of the Founding Fathers with regard to government:
...that whenever any Form of Government beocmes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it...
But.. Rudy is the only person that can save us from the gun grabbing Hillary!!! /sarcasm.
Pay attention, the GOP is about to drop gun owners like a bad habit.
We have got to remember that as far as politicians go we get to pick from the "cream of the crap".
I don't know if there is any electable "cream of the crop", someone that is everything we want them to be, out that anymore.
Except that on Hannity and Colmes last night, he basically said that things are different in cities regarding the 2nd A - whereas IMO, you need concealed carry MORE in cities than you do in rural areas. So I don't think he has a clue regarding basic, critical 2nd Amendment arguments - both regading 2nd A intent and the practicality of concealed carry towards public safety.
But IMO, even more troubling, is that he is against an enumerated right - he basically says that rights are what someone like he decides we should have, which shows an abject misunderstanding of the basic concepts of rights. Meanwhile, he's been a staunch supporter of a judicially-crafted "right" - abortion. But let a federal court tell him to end NYC's sanctuary policy, and he defies them. Roe - good. Crackdown on illegals - bad. He picks and chooses what he follows.
And I really don't see how someone just turns a switch and reverses that kind of mindset. He can talk the talk, but his past raises serious questions as to whether he would walk the walk on these issues.
If that's your expectation, you deserve to have a toilet as your punchbowl.
Me, I think turds should be flushed, not nominated.
BUMP, BANG...
