Bomb threat at the Vienna International Centre (U.N.)

Sorry for the vanity, but the entrances to the Vienna International Centre (the United Nations offices in Vienna) are temporarily blocked by the police.

Apparently there is some sort of bomb threat and they're investigating.

Here's a webcam link of the area, which shows the traffic pretty much at a standstill around the complex.

After hearing a local radio station mention that there is some sort of police investigation or action going on around the V.I.C., I called someone who was already at work there.

They explained that an announcement had been made that there was some sort of bomb threat.

"Reports: Suspected ethnic Albanian extremist arrested last month at Vienna airport"

The Associated Press
Published: January 16, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "VIENNA, Austria: Police last month arrested a suspected ethnic Albanian extremist from Kosovo who allegedly plotted to blow up two bombs inside Montenegro's parliament building, Austrian media reported Tuesday.

The Kronen Zeitung newspaper, in a story for Wednesday's editions, said the radical — a former fighter with the now-disbanded Kosovo Liberation Army — was taken into custody at Vienna's Schwechat International Airport in December."

Cars are mostly at a stand still at the entrance/exits and those visitors/staff who arrived with public transportation are being checked very closely.

Ok, Schnucki, I cannot find any hard news regarding the situation.

Iran is unhappy (understatement) right now with the UN.
Just a thought.

Where's the obligatory "Terrorism not suspected"??

(Apparently required by law to be part of all initial reports of bombs in the US and Europe...)

So, it's official: this morning shortly before 8:00 hrs, the Austrian Police received a bomb threat against the VIC.

They worked together with the United Nations Security and Safety Service, and put measures in place to direct vehicles away from the VIC and thoroughly to check and screen incoming vehicles. At the same time, expert teams searched the VIC as well as surrounding structures.

No evacuation was ordered.

The Opera is located right downtown. Traveling by subway, the VIC is about 20 minutes away to the northeast.

UN's Vienna Office Closed Over Bomb Threat

Crime: 6 February 2007, Tuesday.

Police in Vienna have closed off the UN office in the Austrian capital, after a bomb threat came in by phone.

The building, known as UNO City, also houses the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

All vehicles passing in the area are being searched and this has led to huge traffic jams. Bomb squads have been sent to the area but have turned up nothing yet.

The Vienna office is UN's third biggest in the world after the headquarters in New York and the Geneva Office.
