My Father-in-law Frank C. (age 87) was in the battle of the bulge, (artillery), under General Patton. He had the nickname, "Mister Clean", for he would frequently wash his laundry.

My father fought in WWII. He was in Germany and France. His father served in Germany during WWI. I went to Germany during the Vietnam War and my son is now at Ramstein Germany.
My dad is now 83 and he really wants to see the memorial.

Your post just made me realize I'd better suck it up and foot the bill for him to get from the west coast to DC. Next year may be too late...

Good morning DollyCali. You have started me thinking about my dad, step dad and FIL.

My dad, Ray, was in Panama running radar during the war. It wasn't really bad duty, as my mom and older sister were allowed to go to Panama with him.

As far as I knew, neither my Father in law, Walter nor my step dad, Jim were in the armed services. Then, 4 years ago, shortly before he died, we found out that my father in law worked on the Manhattan Project (his 2nd wife blabbed) We were astonished and asked him about it. The only thing he ever said to us was "that's secret". That is literally the only two words he ever said about it.

We went back home, and talked about how amazing it was. Told my step dad all about it, and how he had never said a word.

Last September my step dad Jim died. His brother, while we were at the funeral, told us that Jim had worked on the Manhattan Project. I was flabbergasted!!! The snot never said a word to me, even when I was talking about my FIL!

Those guys knew how to keep a secret.

My WWII veteran is no longer with us. My father served 44 months ETO and passed away in August of 2003. He was part of a group of 13 cousins that served in the military starting with WWI and on through Korea.

I don't have a photo to post of him that I know of. I'll have to look through a bunch of disks to see.

Evenin' Dolly. GREAT thread.

Allow me to present a photo of two of my favorite WWII Navy Veterans. My father-in-law, George (on the right) and his brother, Ron. This photo was taken in '05 and a family picnic. George suffered a stroke 4 years ago and has mostly recovered his lost functions. Ron still works out every day. Quite a pair and we're awful proud of both of em.

Ron served aboard the battleship USS TENNESSEE and was a member of the ship's boxing team.

George served aboard the submarine USS TINOSA as a Fire Control Tech 3/C. One night on lookout duty he spotted some Japanese ships and the TINOSA sunk 'em. The skipper gave him a bottle of bourbon and he stowed it in his foot-locker. When the returned to Pearl after that patrol, the booze was gone, but visible from the sub's mast was a broom, signifying a clean sweep - all torpedos fired.

Salute to George and Ron along with all these other WWII Veterans.

Dolly, what a great thread!! So much work, time and planning went into this... it is quite beautiful and reminds us of an important time.

My parents met while working at Douglas Aircraft plant in Santa Monica, CA, during WWII.

I wish I were able to play a couple of CDs online I have of music from WWII era.

Wonderful thread Dolly here are photos of my parents from this era. My father was just too young to do anything official in the war. He later went down the mines for his national service but mum was just old enough to be in the ATS.

My mother's father was also in charge of fire watching in Maidstone where both of my parents grew up, I am not sure if this is how they met but they both as teens (13-17) did this in Maidstone under mum's dad.
