High black homicide rate? Blame parents first
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | February 05, 2007 | JEFF SMITH

The Feb. 1 letter commenting on Pennsylvania's black homicide rate, "We Need a Comprehensive Plan to Reduce Violence," asks the entire taxpaying community to solve a problem that is totally the parents' responsibility.

Why do people think it's OK for the public to pay for their personal choices? When your child sells drugs and shoots at people, it's your fault as a parent. If you don't have the means to properly raise a child, then don't have one.

My wife and I (both from the inner city) made some poor choices early in life and have been paying for them ever since. She went to school at night for eight years, and I went back to school at 35 after paying off debts acquired during my younger years.

We did this because we wanted to create the proper environment to have a child. We will try to teach our child that human life is to be cherished and that there are no shortcuts to gaining financial success. When we send our child out into the world and she lacks morals and a strong work ethic, we will be to blame.

Morals are always a grass root endeavour. The difficult part is that those with them are often inclined to keep to their own, like minded, fellows. My wife's a teacher, and it constantly amazes me how far tough and caring goes in creating an impression on young people.

I wasn't ready when I learned that my daughter was on the way, had to grow up fast. I was 38 when I finally got around to some college. I never regretted a second of it, didn't have time to cry. Self respect, honor, and pride have become politically incorrect. All someone has to do is lay the blame on someone else, to have anything excused.
We don't do people any favors, by letting them get away with it. I've heard "men" brag about how many kids they have, and the sorry barstards have never changed a diaper. By the time someone gets that sorry, there is no cure, they are useless.
