Does he seriously want the Feds involved in our retirement homes more than they already are? Geez, that's downright frightening. I don't think that's really what he's proposing. I think he's proposing some changes to Social Security to incentivize people who are so inclined to work later in life.

I was referring to this section:
2. Develop a system of independent living and assisted living that increases the years in which people can be on their own and in most cases enables people to live their entire lives with freedom and dignity;
The last thing I want is the Feds doing any more assisting in my life.

I agree. But he doesn't actually say he wants a federal program for that. But, yeah...it's not really a matter for the federal government, and we need to keep the feds (and government at all levels, for that matter) from interfering in any more areas of our lives.

Here's my answer:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

What, you don't want a civil servant dropping by to make sure you've taken the correct pills and are keeping their property up the way they want you to?

Have a good day. I'm off to bed.
Stay warm.

A friend of mine, Ray harbin, was deeply disapointed by Newt being a closet Greenie. Ray met Newt when he was a member of the same river board in the Atlanta area.
Under Newt, not one bill attempting to reform (much less 'sunset') the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was allowed onto the floor.
For those who have not followed the adverse impacts of the
ESA, please note that ESA is the justification of the nationalization of land ownership throughout America. Just as an example, Florida has already socialized 15,000 square miles of its approx. 60,000 square miles of land.
Please note that Newt has included health care and "the environment" in his wish list. Green once, Green always. And, Newt is green.
Newt, and the Republican Revolution, was a good idea that was never actualized. And, it propbably won't be if Newt is involved.
America can do better. America must do better, and very quickly - before the nexus of events from the Chinese and/or Muslim challenge, the results of generations of deliberate public school education system dumbing down, and the prevasve Marxism of the Academented, overwhelms what is left of the American culture.
I left the Mexiforming of America to the last, because if we do not remain true to the Founding Documents, not one of which is copied in any way in the Mexican "way of life", we are also doomed to the dust bin of history.
Better that any of a number of FReeper occupy the Oval Office than Newtie Kazootie.

Here's my answer: That it an answer. But you didn't answer the question:
Would you feel uncomfortable being part of a political party whose platform calls for the return of prayer in schools, calls for more official religious involvement in government programs, calls for preserving the "sanctity" of life and opposing abortion for that reason, calls for the preservation of the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance, and even mentions God, one of the teachings of Jesus Christ, and the power of prayer on its first page?

I gave you my answer; I support the First Amendment, word for word.
And I won't support any party that wants to change the First Amendment.

I like Newt's outline and his ambitious proposals. I would like to see a FR poll to gauge member and non member support.

Great set of ideals. Glad Newt is putting these out for public discussion and seeking solutions to help attain them. The next president may be the candidate that has the best organization interacting with the public, not simply sharing a message. The site, www.americansolutions.com may push Newt to the forefront as a presidential candidate.

"I hestiate on II because I just am not comfortable with trying to legislate religion in any way, shape, or form."
I understand your hesitation. Most Americans are not old enough to remember when government legislated religion. It has only been since 1943 that states have been stripped of this right through a series of Supreme Court rulings. In extending the prohibitions placed upon Congress in the First Amendment to the states, the Supreme Court created a moral vacuum.
Although legislating religion seems troublesome, there is no history of states abusing this right in the first 150+ years of our nation. Lacking this we have a federal government very active in attacking religion.
To: Jim Robinson
I agree with you 100% Jim! We've discussed this so you know my thoughts on this. Government once had the right to legislate religion, speech, press and assembly, but it was state governments as the First Amendment only restricted the federal government (Congress) from making such laws.
The First Amendment must be restored as written if the nation is to regain morals. During our lifetimes, we seen states prohibited from tackling flag burning as a form of protest, obscenity laced speech, pornography, prayer in public school, non-citizens protesting against our nation on our streets, and a slew of other social issues the states could once legislate.
