The "ranks" are already split...
Political ranks are always split to some degree. The question is to what degree are they split? The only concern now ought to be: Is the schism fatal or can things be duct taped together in the time remaining until Nov. 2008?
I agree that there has to be some give. All or nothing types usually end up with nothing. And while I enjoy a little repartee and badinage as much as the next person, at some point we have to find a leader who will give as many as possible a chance to jump on to his/her wagon- or the whole thing is moot. I'm still looking for that candidate.

... I may go after a liberal like Rino Rudy, but I never insult a fellow freeper. So its okay to tear the base asunder as long as you don't insult scumbag fifth columnists who are only supporting an agenda of disruption? Not in my opinion. I prefer to let the base determine a candidate without dividing the potentials and to attack those who use disingenuous words to insult, harass and otherwise disrupt those in the tent.

I'll be voting FOR my candidate in the primaries, but AGAINST the Dems in the final election, no matter who wins the GOP nomination.
