Microsoft co-founder and former CEO Bill Gates has openly criticized Apple's 'Get a Mac' ads, called the company a liar, and questioned the security of Apple's Mac OS X operating system. In a recent interview with Newsweek, Gates compared Microsoft's recently released security-oriented Windows Vista to Apple's Mac OS X: "We made it way harder for guys to do exploits," Gates said, referring to Windows Vista. "The number [of violations] will be way less because we've done some dramatic things [to improve security] in the code base. Apple hasn't done any of those things." The executive also referenced the frequent discovery of flaws in Mac OS X. "Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine." Gates was likely referring to the 'Month of Apple Bugs' project -- which came under intense criticism this week for exploiting Safari users attempting to view a freshly-discovered bug.

I have never heard that one before. I must be get me a Mac so I can write cool things like that!
I realize that, but Apple only supports drivers for a tiny fraction of hardware that can physically fit in the motherboard.
It's the plethora of drivers that Windows supports that cause it to be less stable than OSX. Windows is infinitely more flexible than OSX.
It is always hardware drivers that cause the Blue Screen of Death.

Macs are now based on the same hardware as PCs. While Apple doesn't support all PC hardware, there is quite a selection available. Mac Pros can be configured in tons of distinct combinations now, and the video cards run the gamut from basic to top-end professional 3D cards.
I personally love MacOS X and my 24" iMac. =)

Then why are they starting to do it if they don't need to. Looks like a Mac users will be paying for a lot of technical fixes that they don't need. Mac OS programmers must be laughing all the way to Starbucks.
They get Mac users to go from Firewire to USB so they can hook up to APPLE IPODS, they go with an Intel chip so Mac users can run windows and now they make Mac users pay for uneeded fixes to the OS! Wow.
This is like Batman saying that he's smarter than Superman because he has the sense to incorporate kevlar armor into his costume.
You don't know much about Macs. You don't need anything from Windows unless you want to run your old Windows programs. Once you upgrade to Mac apps, Windows can go out the...window. =)
I'm quite sure over 90% of Mac owners will never install Windows on their Macs. For many of us, getting away from Windows was one of the big draws...

On a related note, I LOVE those Mac commercials. I wanna bring that smug 20-something young man home for dinner. I love that he's so suble, so sympathetic to the poor Micro-man! It's just how I feel when discussing thier computer problems with my windows-using-sisters-who-won't-keep-their-kids-off-the-computer!

I think it's mostly Apple users at this point.
The stupid "Im a Mac" ads completely turned me off to that platform. For all the "superiority" that was supposed to be obvious, I was totally underwhelmed.
You are REALLY clueless about Macs.
Macs have had USB since long before they used Intel CPUs. Check out the feature list on even older G4 Macs, like the tiBook. It has USB, and was introduced in 2000.
Apple's long history with USB is one of the main reasons so many USB peripherals are Mac compatible.
You do realize that the "Mac went to USB" before most PC makers did. Quite a long time ago in fact.
Before there was any such thing as an iPod all Macs were being shipped with USB.

Oh I hear you on the difference between home use and corporate use....Let me ask you this...what's the difference to you if your corporate web site is taken down by a DDOS attack from corporate machines or home machines? I'll bet now the difference between home use and office use doesn't matter......Security is a comunity issue, not just a corporate issue. All who use the internet are affected.....But I do agree with you on the different risks involved between home and corporate use...
I beg to differ. When I want my computer (mac iBook) to do something it's not set up to do (video conferencing) I just spend a little time on the net, head to my nearest Staples, and buy the product that is labled "Windows Only". Oh, ya, and I love to ask the clerk if it will work on a Mac. They always say "no", then I tell them if I can't make it work in 2 days, I'll bring it back. I very rarely take it back!
Heck, even when my computer says "Hey, I can't do that, I don't have enough memory or hardware or whatever" I just tell it to shut up and work....then it does it!
It would be great to see that documented.

The first generation iPods were firewire only. I know because I have one.
