LADY LAKE, Florida (CNN) -- Deadly storms swept across central Florida on Friday morning, damaging homes, toppling trees and sending trucks careening off Interstate 4, police said.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office said there were "several" fatalities in Lady Lake, where at least two mobile home parks were hit. Authorities could not say how many deaths there were.

I did not know that about wind speed measurement... sounds similar to the way the Richter scale measures EQs.

No more about "signs" from me...:)

you are so, so, so right. You simply cannot trust FNC when it comes to this stuff. As soon as science or geography is involved they are completely untrustworthy. That cute dopey lawyer Megan Kelly had Mount Kilimanjaro MELTING all week. All morning they had Volusia County south of Disney!!!

You cannot trust them.

"Greta will be here in Central Fl tonight for her show..."

Greta is the worse when it comes to science or geography. Fox needs some new blood and to get the heck out of NYC. I find New Yorkers and NE people in general to be totally provincial when it comes to geography. When I lived in California they would always start a telephone conversation with "how's the weather in Califorinia." I'd say, mid-teens last night and could probably snow any time." And I was always right. I love the easties that show up in San Francisco in August in shorts and tank tops. Idiots.

Notice the scale changed yesterday. The new F5 requires lower wind velocity than the of F5.

There is a BIG difference between people having "no clue."

And people getting "sufficient warning."

NOLA for example and now Central Florida.

And despite what you heard on Fox the path was NORTH of Orlando!
Check it out.

Glad you're okay. Glad have heard from so many FReepers in the area and all seem to be okay. Is there anyone who has not checked in?

Prayers for those in the path of these storms and for all those who will be there on the scene helping clean up everything and helping care for those whose homes and lives have been so damaged.

How far is this from Lake Placid? We have relatives there. I just tried to call and, obviously, no phone service in that area. we are praying for all of you in Florida. How terrifying! God bless...

I *think* Lake Placid is south of where this all happened. I'll ping a FL FReeper to better answer your question. :)

Thanks! I just got a look at a map, and it appears that they are well out of the danger zone. It's a relief, obviously, but my prayers are still with those who experienced this horrifying night.

I am sure you had a hard night last night...and I am really sorry for you and all Floridians.

Living in north Texas, I know what it is like to have to deal with tornados.

However, you are taking things I am saying about FOX NEWS personally, and therefore, jumping on ME, and I don't think I deserve it.

I hope that everything goes well for you and all Floridians in the cleanup...and I am sorry for any losses.

Mine will join yours! I had to stop watching because it was just too painful to watch so many who have lost everything).

You are a bit sensitive.

I am not jumping on anyone. I am just telling you NOT to believe what you see on FOX. CNN is much better with geography and most science (not global warming.)

Hey FLA FReepers!
I called TigerBill (in Deland) and he is doing well. The nasty storms didn't affect him or his property at all!

Well...I just heard on CNN that there were no alarms, and no warning for the people that were hit.

That echoes what Fox News said today...that I posted, that got me jumped all over.

Thanks for the reassurance on Tiger Bill, Mac.

Looks like our Florida gang is still intact!

Gonzo, it appears that the tornado hit not too far from your old stampin' grounds.

Gee, this post turned into a poem (from the way it sounds)

LOL

I was camping in a tent. It was not fun.

Having been caught in a similar situation, it was terrifying. It was also one of the most exciting things i've ever experienced. It's still clear in my head right now, 20+ years on. It was like the world exploded around me and there wasn't a damn thing I could do about it. Everything slows down and little things take on massive importance. It's bizzaro land.
