Whose side are these border patrol agents on?

Had they simply not attempted to cover this up they would be free and standing guard on the border today.

I would suggest everybody on this thread who is speculating about the facts of this case take the time to read the large number of threads already posted on the subject, because there is a LOT of incorrect statements here, not about opinion but about the facts that are indisputable in the case.

Whose Side Is Bush On?

I've been asking that question since the Berger sentencing.

What has destroyed President Bush's credibility is NOT that he won't pardon these border agents, and it's NOT that they were subjected to a "curiously aggressive" high-level prosecution effort, in which federal prosecutors and high-ranking Justice Dept. officials went to extraordinary lengths in granting multiple immunities to a known criminal and drug-runner for his testimony, in order to make an example of these men.

No, what has destroyed his credibility is that he has allowed all this to be done while simultaneously:

1. Sandy Berger is walking around free with a slap on the wrist.

2. Scooter Libbey is being allowed to twist in the wind at the mercy of an out-of-control prosecutor, while the high-ranking lady CIA Asst. Director (whose name momentarily eludes me) who helped set up the whole Valerie Plame scam was also given a slap on the wrist, allowed to resign, and not prosecuted.

3. The publisher and editor or the New York Time, their reporters, and the US govt. agents in the CIA and State Departments who illegally leaked and published classified information on two national security programs critical to our fight against terrorists have yet to be arrested, indicted and tried for breaking the law.

4. An out-of-control JAG corps in our military is being allowed to devastate the morale of our fighting men and women in harms way with politically motivated prosecutions.

5. Members of the US Congress, former government officials now flacking for foreign governments, and lunatic ex-Presidents are routinely jet-setting around the world and publicly conducting, with great media fanfare, their own foreign policy negotiations with enemy governments in direct violation of the Logan Act, and in direct contradiction of the policies of the duly-elected government of our country, and NOTHING has been done about it.

The above list is far from exhaustive. I could go on for quite a while, but they suffice to illustrate the point. What has destroyed President Bush's credibility is NOT that the border agents were punished, it's the HYPOCRITICAL and SELECTIVE nature of the Bush Administration's Justice Department, it's the "Justice For Thee, But Not For Me" attitude.

These border agents messed-up, badly, but what they did does not represent a threat to our national survival, yet their own government comes down on them like the proverbial ton of bricks, while high-ranking, powerful individuals in positions of trust and grave responsibility for our nation's security, and who commit crimes which DO threaten our security, and which DO give "aid and comfort" to our mortal enemies, these people are untouched.

As long as this brazen, contemptible double-standard of justice remains the preferred philosophy of the Administration and indeed the rest of the government classes, they will never regain their credibility, and they will have squandered and forfeited their legitimacy.
