One of the students mentioned to her friend that there were bunches of Middle-Eastern guys buying phones in the Radio Shack at Metrocenter, Jackson, MS.
About 13 men or so bought the tracphones and her clerk friend also said that many of them came in buying phones in the afternoon as well.
I contacted the FBI in Jackson already.
They are not totally worthless, they are keeping it BTTT.
1) Aware of the phone-reselling scheme and
2) Vigilant for real threats
This activity to me does not seem like a real threat, unless the reselling scheme were used as a cover for something else (unlikely).
If you still don't get the joke, just go back to your banjo and forget it. (Hint the MS part had nothing to do with Mississippi)
I play the mandolin, thank you
Um, this is a joke, yes? Hello?
In your world we have infinite numbers of agents, and infinte dollars, and federal investigators. In the real world, we don't, and when they are forced to investigate non-crimes it detracts resources from real threats. I'm sorry you believe the government can protect you, but they can't. An enemy within our borders who is determined to kill WILL be succesful, it is just a matter of time... there are infinitely many ways to kill, and our bureaucratic government is too inflexible to respond to this kind of threat. Resources spent on infiltrating existing networks and PROTECTING OUR BORDERS are much more effective than taking liberties and creating a police state. If that happens, they have won... If one wants to be very safe from terrorist attacks, live in any rural area, there is no benefit to an attack there.
Okay. My first thought was F1 students arriving for the new semester, but none of those colleges ring any bells with me as having large populations of F1's.
Yes, a joke on Wal-Mart in Mississippi.
This is the last place I would expect posters to dog a fellow FReeper for being VIGILANT. God help you if you or yours is killed or wounded in the next terrorist attack.
Like from one of these, maybe?
Good for you for calling the FBI.
Let's hope they take some action.
I was scared silly by that (pulled) thread about Al Quaeda planning a Beslan-type attack on our public schools soon. Even though I don't have any grandchildren in public school, the very thought makes me ill.
It was bad enough what happened in the Amish schoolhouse last October.
Those who watch these things said the attack is being planned for middle schools, because they are the least guarded, and the girls are old enough to be raped.
Sickening!
Well said, Shadowstrike!
I'd rather suspect every Muslim alive, and be wrong- than trust every one of them to be 'fair'-and be wrong.
How many people did the 9-11 murderers see, every day, who didn't suspect them?
Being alive, and Muslim, in this country is reason enough for me to suspect every one of them . I consider every one of them my enemy, and I don't care who likes it, or what they think of me.
Poor FBI.
Don't you think they have more important things to do than worry about people buying dirt cheap cellphones in order to resell them at a profit?
This is a very common practice all over the country. Typically, in fact, the men engaged in this practice are from India.
Also know, struggle, that Middle Eastern troublemakers troll this site and try to devalue opinions like yours.
Better to be alert and alive than dismissive and dead!
"...Being alive, and Muslim, in this country is reason enough for me to suspect every one of them . I consider every one of them my enemy, and I don't care who likes it, or what they think of me."
It is worth repeating. The libs love to make fun of us by calling us names like xenophobic or racist. But I say flattery will get them nowhere.
Profiling by country of origin or religion is NECESSARY. It may be hard to figure out just how to do it, but it must be done!
I'd say they're pretty well ahead on that one already.
Middle Eastern trolls? Now you're really getting silly.
>>Phone Resellers Avoid Trumped-Up Terrorism Charges, Now Face Trumped-Up Fraud Charges Instead
from the saving-face dept
Some good news came for the three Palestinian-American men arrested in Michigan, basically for having 1,000 prepaid cell phones: they won't be charged with any terrorism-related offenses. The bad news: they've been hit with federal fraud charges instead. The guys' business plan was pretty straightforward: buy subsidized prepaid phones, then get them unlocked so they could work with any compatible provider, then sell them for a higher price. Prosecutors allege the men's actions represent an attempt to defraud prepaid provider Tracfone, phone manufacturer Nokia and the public by trafficking in counterfeit goods. While unlocking phones, particularly for resale, annoys mobile operators, it's not abundantly clear how doing so represents fraud, nor how unlocking the phones makes them counterfeit, and it's not clear at all why doing so is illegal, though Tracfone and other providers apparently make the bizarre claim that it's copyright infringement. In any case, it seems like any potential legal problems here would be of a civil nature, and not worthy of federal fraud and money-laundering charges. Somehow, you get the feeling somebody doesn't want to admit the arrest and subsequent treatment of these guys was nothing other than a big mistake.
