Counter Protest March 17th, 2007 At the Wall

Posted on 02/01/2007 9:56:54 AM PST by 1stbn27

We are not going to allow this to happen if we have to stand 20 deep around the WALL.

This letter will be going all over the Internet...to all the major Veteran groups...please spread this far and wide.

This was posted on another group. In case you think it's of little importance, they are formimg up at THE WALL! In case you think these are a bunch of loonies with nothing better to do on St. Patrick\'s Day, think again. Here is a link to the groups involved (They are NOT the Boy Scouts) and to their website. Be sure to check out the t-shirts they are selling, especially the Che Guevera one. It is my opinion that it is time to plan a St. Patricks Day Road Trip, and Lock & Load, at least in the verbal sense and protect a very Sacred and Special Place. I am not saying we should express any opinion on the war, that is for each of us to decide.

What I am saying is how many of us want Jane Fonda, Cindy Sheehan, FMLN (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front) USA, Vietnam Veterans Against the War Anti-Imperialist, Welfare Warriors, All India Anti-imperialist Forum, Muslim Student Association West, Berkeley Fellowship UU\'s Social Justice, Gay Liberation Network - Chicago; B. Ross Ashley co-founder Union of American Exiles-1968* Toronto, and hundreds of other far left, Anti American Organizations to use The Wall as a focal point for their own Private Agendas? Yes, we all served to protect their Freedom of Speech, but if their oblivious use of this Sacred Ground to garner more Media Coverage goes un-challenged, surely the Spirits of our Dead Brothers and Sisters on The Wall will cry out in pain.

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS LIST! http://answer.pephost.org/site/News2?abbr=ANS_&page=NewsArticle&id=8137

To All Vietnam Veterans, Veterans, Military, and True Americans

Please forward this information to all Veterans, Military, and clear thinking Americans that you know...these Un-American Morons and worse, are intending to use "The Wall" as their starting point of their Anti-War March on March 17th.

Contact the Dept of the Interior, the DC Park District, your Congressmen and Senators. Ask them to close the Wall for repairs on that day. It is against the law to protest at any of the Memorials in DC.

I have been in contact with the Dept of the Interior and they did want to see the above website and wording because the protestors do have a permit to gather, but NOT a permit to gather at the WALL. I am waiting for their reply. I also contacted both of my Senators and my Congressman and asked them to pressure the DC Park District to fence off the WALL area for "Repairs" on the 17th of March.

If none of this works let's be there to keep them away. The Wall is HALLOWED GROUND. They have no right to soil it in this manner. If they throw paint on the WALL like they did the steps to the Capitol there will have HELL to pay! Just there presence is insulting! Pass this on and on and on and on!

I then contacted and recieved a Reply Mail from the National Park Service

Dear Sir:

I forwarded your E-mail attachment to the National Park Service employee and U.S. Park Police Sergeant who will be meeting with applicants for a public gathering permit for a large march/demonstration on 17 MAR 07. At this time, it is accurate to state that the National Park Service has issued no permit for any event starting at the Wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, on that date. As I mentioned on the telephone, there are special regulations, found at Title 36, United States Code of Federal Regulations, Section 7.97, which protect core Vietnam Veterans Memorial areas and resources from such activities.

As my Supervisor directed, I have requested the National Park Service employee responsible for reviewing any public gathering permit application, as described above, to respond to the concerns you expressed on the telephone this morning, via E-mail. Thank you for your time.

Robert M. Healy, Jr.

Park Ranger, National Mall and Memorial Parks

In other words the website is lying they have not yet gotten a permit, now is the time to fight with the pen we must get this information out asap....people need to clog their Congressmen and Senators and the National Park Service with E-mails and phone calls! They can't be allowed to be anywhere near any Memorial! Thats what the streets are for the gutter and the garbage. Please forward this far and wide!

I just recieved the following from Ironman0311@aol.com

Veterans, family and friends;

In response to the concerns expressed, I contacted Robin Owen (Person in charge of issuing event permits for the National Mall area) of the National park Service via telephone this morning and was very convincingly informed and assured of the following:

1.)  There will be a 300 yard perimeter comprised of double snow fence barriers with an ample number mounted, foot police, riot reaction squad nearby, and intelligence personal on scene, to ensure that the conditions of the permit granted to the antiwar activists are not violated. E.G. the assembly point is in an appointed area on the eastern end of the grounds (Knoll) and they will not be allowed in the proximity of the wall. A Similar exclusion zone applies area and approaches from Constitution Ave. So net effect ... no protesters within 300 yd's.

2.)  That ALL laws will be vigorously enforced and prosecuted in terms of any violence, vandalism,or, threat to public safety. This was stated emphatically.

3.)  About an hour later, I received a phone call from Sgt, Booker of the Park Police saying he had been asked by Robin Owen to reiterate the policy and to reinforce her statements to me and answer any further questions I may have on the Park Police law enforcement polices.

Sgt. Booker stated even MORE emphatically that the Park Police consider the Wall as sacred ground, as we do, (As did Robin Owen) themselves, and that they WILL enforce any, and all laws, relevant to it's integrity. And, any concerns we may have stemming from the non-enforcement of the law by the Capitol Police last weekend are not relevant to his Dept. They WILL arrest and prosecuted anyone who breaks the law.

4.)  The Wall will be open for visiting to the general public as usual ... if any of you care to do so on that day.

Vietnam veterans are asking veterans, their families and friends, active duty military personal, as well as the like-minded public, to join us in emailing, calling, and writing, the National Park Service robbin_owen@nps.gov (1-202 619-7225) and Vietnam Memorial Fund vvmf@vvmf.org (202) 393-0090 Fax: (202) 393-0029 asking them to take any and all legal action to prohibit the planned anti-war demonstration on March 17, 2007 at,the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Further, to demand that the appropriate law enforcement agencies stringently enforce the law as it pertains to defacement of public edifices, monuments, and property.

We are very concerned, in light of recent events, there will be a repetition of the vandalism that occurred at last weekend's antiwar protest has a real potential to reoccur at the upcoming event, and that the police again will be prevented from enforcing the law by their superiors. We will not allow the Vietnam War Memorial be vandalized, spray painted, or in any way be defaced, as was the U.S. Congress during last weekend's antiwar protest when police were ordered to retreat in the face of leftist radicals who defiled our nation's seat of government. If the police are similarly prevented in doing their job as they were in the case of the U.S. Congress, we veterans are more than willing and able to form a "human honor guard" (peacefully) to prevent a similar sacrilege to the nation's property and to what we consider hollowed ground, and our war's collective tombstone.

We do not object to public protest. Many of us have fought, bled, and died, to provide (and protect) the citizenry the right to free assembly.

We do however, strongly object the use of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial as a backdrop and stage for political gain. And, we take it as an affront to our fallen comrade-in-arms and to their honor that the antiwar movement's organizers and supporters would be so insensitive, inconsiderate, and boorish, as to even consider it as suitable location for political theater.

It is scared ground and should be considered as such.

This is a very emotional issue to many veterans and the potential for confrontation is very high. In the interest of the sensitivities of the veterans and that of public safety and good order, we ask the you to use your good offices and influence to convince antiwar movement's organizers to reconsider their choice of assembly point, and relocate it to a less emotionally charged area.

Semper Fi

Rick  Ironman0311@aol.com

All of this not withstanding, I intend on being in Washington DC on March 17, 07. To make sure the WALL is respected and to show my solidarity with the Troops and their mission and from what I am hearing there will be good sized turnout of Vietnam Veterans...I hope as many of you as possible will join me in this demonstration of patriotism and love for this great country and all that it stands for.

I have always thought that if there was another war after Vietnam that if people like Jane Fonda and her ilk ever protested in the streets while we had troops in the field that I would be in the streets with a baseball bat...well I have mellowed some...I won't hit anyone as long as they don't come near me, I won't chase them down....but I will be there to remind them that the ones who are doing the fighting are the exact ones who give then the right to protest.

And that they are being laughed at by the ones in the darkness.

We of all people, the Vietnam Veterans owe it to these young brave troops to watch their back here at home, because we understand what it is like to be abandoned by our country!

If you need a ride or help getting there please contact me and I will do what I can to help you. Also if you are going for sure and have room to give others rides please let me know so I can put you together with riders.

God Bless our Troops in harm's way and the USA

Note: forwarded message attached.

This is true, these people intend to use our fallen warriors to once again shame our nation and troops at war. Vietnam Veterans had to raise the money to have this memorial and to get it built was something akin to birthing a thousand pound child.

When these people use our sacred memorial and the gallant warriors whose names are on it,they tread on ground bought with blood. They also perpetuate the myth we were all unwilling participants in our war and claim we are all in tacit agreement with them. This is a lie and it cannot stand in the bright sun of freedom this time.

I ask all who can be there, especially vets on motorcycles to ride forth and protect our sacred ground.God Bless all of you and our troops taking the fight to our enemies.

Gathering of Eagles

"A helpless sparrow can drift with the wind. It takes an "Eagle" to fly against the storm."

1000 Hours, March 17, 2007

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall

Washington, D.C.

The anti-war/anti-America groups are planning a "march to the Pentagon" on March 17, 2007... this group has intentions that defenders of freedom cannot overlook or allow to occur... there must be a challenge.

Here's a portion from the "anti-war" web site March 17 -- March on Pentagon!: Time to Turn Up the Heat! that causes considerable concern: "The biggest single group of new volunteers and activists are soldiers and marines who have returned from Iraq. Their family members and other veterans are also organizing to March on the Pentagon. The opening rally will assemble at the Vietnam Memorial (Constitution Gardens) at noon."

The anti-war/anti-America group cannot be allowed to use the Viet Nam Memorial Wall as a back-drop to their anti-America venom and stain the hallowed ground that virtually cries out with blood at the thought of this proposed desecration ... it must not happen.

Many are encouraging a "Gathering of Eagles" (symbolic of our freedom) at the Viet Nam Memorial Wall on March 17, 2007, as a signal that a segment of America does not agree with the "anti-war/anti-America" rally on the same day. As noted above, the anti-war/anti-America crowd is publishing intention to use the Viet Nam Memorial as a backdrop to their rally................this cannot happen...............it cannot go unchallenged.

Based on the input received, here is what is suggested as a means to identify those of us attending/visiting the Viet Nam Memorial wall and other Memorials on March 17, 2007 opposing the anti-war distortions.

We want to send a different message than the "anti-war/anti-America" surrender crowd, so we should be clearly set apart from them.

Wear a Red Armband on the right arm (Red often symbolizes/represents courage, revolution, hardiness, blood, and/or valor) .

On the armband each person should print something, e.g. WWII, Korea, Nam, Iraq, spouse, widow, POW, Vet, Legion, patriot, citizen, etc., or other respectful phrase one wants to help us identify one another.

We need to remember all American's are invited to support our effort which is intended as a defender of hallowed ground and intended as a non-violent competition between those that would sell out America and those of us who support freedom and keeping the fight with the enemy on distant shores.

Many of us will be wearing favorite caps, shirts, jackets, jungle fatigues, desert dress, medals, etc. to include the Red Armband............it will be a grand reunion, a time of new friendships, which will also, God willing, rekindle a new light of American patriotism which would filter down the mall toward the Capitol of the United States.......maybe even the main stream media (MSM)

........obviously more detail is needed which will come as we draw nearer.

We know some of the, who, what, when, why, where, …….it's up to each of us to supply the "how".

More details to follow....................

Free Republic to get Permit for counter Demonstration

ViperAsh50@aol.com
Feb. 05, 07

Kristinn Taylor the President of the DC Chapter of Free Republic kristinn@bellatlantic.net will be getting a permit for a counter protest on March 17th, 07 in Washington DC...They will set up along the route of the Anti-War Protestors, and we from the "Gathering of Eagles" will be under their permit umbrella. When we are satisfied the Wall is secure and the Park Police have everything under control we can march to where the counter protest will take place to show our support of our troops in the field.

I have also talked to Jeff White, PA, State Council, Vietnam Veterans of America, who has sent out 1500 e-mails. And he has also notified the Gold Star Mothers, and Modern Day Veterans those who have served after 1990.

This morning I also talked to Artie Muller - National Executive Director - of Rolling Thunder, he wants all the information on the "Gathering of Eagles". He has not committed yet, but we can hope.

America must know that there are those of us who know what Anti war protests do to the moral of the troops and who better to let them know than the Vietnam Veterans? We must let our Troops know America is not abandoning another generation of soldiers. These Protesters say they "Support the Troops" how can they possibly believe what they are doing is any way support....What they are doing in reality is what they did to us almost 40 years ago...they are giving our enemies aid and comfort and hope that all they have to do is wait us out...great Americans, Like Jane Fonda. These people are not anti-war they are anti AMERICA!

Anyone who is setting up a convoy or trying to get a bus send me your e-mail and I can put the word out in my "Desk of Viper"

Please forward this mail to all Veterans of all wars to all Veteran organizations to all right thinking Americans forward it on and on and on.

If you are coming from the west

ty@raddue.com

We have a few convoys of vets headed there from the west starting on March 1st. The intention is to pickup more along the way, get there, link arms and not let any of that trash get near our Hallowed Ground!

Thanks for the help in organizing our March 17 Rally.

I think we need to have a presence of patriots at the WWII and Korean War Memorials. If the Wall is amply protected, than the leftists may take their possible vandalism to these other two Memorials.

Great to have you join! There's a parallel thread, trying to coordinate info, especially about anyone offering rides. It isn't showing in the sidebars at the right side of the screen which lists the threads but here's the link: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1777003/posts?page=97#97 Please send a message on that thread to "Just A Nobody" saying you want to be added to the "ping list" so that you'll be included in any generally distributed info over there.

And if you're coming down on Friday, please feel free to attend the troop support rally (anti-code pink rally)that occurs in front of Walter Reed Army Medical Center every friday night. If there isn't a link at the top of the "main" page, search for keyboard "WRAMC". Again, glad you're coming!

Hi Gary... I just read the email you sent out.... I think it's wonderful what your doing! I can't see how these idiots call themselves Americans and then to protest their crap at the Wall?...I can't be there but, I am going to wear a red arm band on that day in support of what you guys are doing there.... I have a small request ... is it possible you could just write Kevin's name for me on your arm band that day? He's a proud soldier and doing his job well. He is leaving for Iraq on the 15th of Feb.

Kevin R. Cockrill..........is his full name... but, only if you care to write it out...He is with the 10th mtn Div......... Thank you soooooo much for having his name with you on that day....... I am soooo proud and will be happy knowing that his name will be there in support of all that we believe in!! thanks....God Bless our Country and all who fought for our freedom!

Kevin's grad day at Ft.Benning Sept. 2006 with one of his DI's who is with the 173rd and his Dad who was with the 173rd in Vietnam 1969..Kevin's dad lost his right leg from the war, and even though we are divorced the kids always had such pride and love for him for what he's been thru and always proud.

Will do Mary.... Kevin R. Cockrill will be flying with the Eagles on March 17th

Greetings fellow airborne troopers!!

Pls. take a second to read the notes below. A GATHERING OF EAGLES that will take place on 17 March is for one reason----TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR OUR TROOPS!!!! The momentum is gathering, and ALL veterans (or ANYONE!!) who support what our troops are doing against the war on terror are invited.

I would encourage you to spread the word around Ft. Bragg and Fayetteville to ANYONE who recognizes what THE TROOPS are doing to protect the homeland to come join us at the Wall on 17 March in a show of solidarity and patriotism. All are welcome who support our soldiers and what they’re doing.

Of course the active duty troops at Bragg would be more than welcome to participate, however I would suggest a check with appropriate regulations would be in order regarding wearing of the uniform to such an event.

Feel free to share this note with any other military organizations you may be in touch with.

Our nation's veterans can breathe a sigh of relief over John Kerry's recent decision not to mount another presidential campaign. Perhaps he finally came to the realization that America is no longer amused by his political chicanery. Perhaps Teresa, after having discovered a more lucrative financial investment, simply cut off his allowance. Or perhaps Kerry's long-suppressed conscience finally emerged -- tormenting him with pangs of quilt over his opportunistic, deceptive and narcissistic ways. I think not.

In any case, the committed folks who challenged him in 2004 did so at significant risk and personal sacrifice. Fortunately, they can now "stand down," comforted by the fruits of their labor.

As we look toward the future, we should all stand steadfast against the use of phony war records and libelous testimony against our nation's most cherished resource -- the brave men and women of our Armed Forces. We must demand that this type of deception is never again employed as the basis of a political platform. As a nation, we should also strive to do a far better job of vetting our candidates, rebuking those who employ the "win by any means" mentality so prevalent in today's political arena.

As for Kerry, it's not too late for him to apologize for bearing false witness against his brothers in arms. In his libelous testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Senator chose to tarnish the image of an entire generation of courageous servicemen. Despicably, Kerry, ever the opportunist, did so for his own political gain. Our Vietnam veterans, who served with dignity and honor, were forced to carry the stain of Kerry's lies for the next three decades.

One such apology was well-received when Steve Pitkin asked to be forgiven by thousands of veterans at the "Kerry Lied" rally -- a 2004 event sponsored by Vietnam Vets for the Truth (VVT) in Washington. Steve admitted to libeling his fellow servicemen by providing false testimony at the "Winter Soldier Investigations." The 1971 Detroit gathering was sponsored by John Kerry and his infamous organization "Vietnam Veterans Against the War." At the time, Mr. Pitkin acquiesced to mounting pressure from Kerry to provide a first-hand account of heinous war crimes occurring in Vietnam -- fictional events of which he had no personal knowledge. Steve's teary-eyed apology was followed by an emotional embrace from hundreds of Vietnam veterans in attendance who cheered: "Welcome home brother."

Kerry's 2004 campaign fell victim to a number of things including major offensives launched by credible 527s, like "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" and "VVT." In the end, however, it was the senator's inability to discern truth from fiction coupled with a shameful past that orchestrated his timely demise.

Let John Kerry's failure to realize his lifelong presidential ambitions serve as a staunch reminder to disingenuous politicians everywhere and especially to those who proclaim they would not be confronted by those who defend the truth, true patriots refuse to allow political aspirants to hide behind embellished stories and lies.

Mr. Epstein previously directed media relations for Vietnam Vets for the Truth.

'Gathering of Eagles'
to protect Vietnam Veterans Wall

By C.J. Raven
U.S. Veteran Dispatch
February 07, 2007

Leftist activists who march to the Pentagon next month will discover that their path won't be as clear as it has been in the past.

The group, led by Cindy Sheehan, Jane Fonda, Ed Asner and their ilk, plan to gather March 17 at the Vietnam Memorial Wall to begin a march to protest America's involvement in the Iraq war. The date marks the fourth anniversary of the war's beginning.

This time, however, protestors will see objectors if they spit on Iraqi veterans again, or throw paint on a war memorial. This time, they will encounter a buzz saw of Vietnam veterans and supporters who will gather to protect the Wall, and show their support for U.S. troops. The counter-protestors are calling themselves the Gathering of Eagles.

"... An eagle knows when a storm is approaching long before it breaks. The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it."

An unknown author wrote that description, but it describes how the veterans see their mission. They are angry that the Wall is being used as a jumping off point for a political protest and they are gathering to protect it from another storm of anti-war activists.

"The anti-war/anti-America group cannot be allowed to use the Vietnam Memorial Wall as a back-drop to their anti-America venom and stain the hallowed ground that virtually cries out with blood at the thought of this proposed desecration ... it must not happen," said veteran Bud Gross. "... All Americans are invited to support our effort, which is intended as a defender of hallowed ground and intended as a non-violent competition between those that would sell out America and those of us who support freedom and keeping the fight with the enemy on distant shores."

The group defending the Wall will be wearing armbands to identify themselves. Those who are unable to stand with the defenders are being asked to wear armbands with small U.S. flags to show their own communities that they abhor the Fonda-Sheehan tactics.

"We'll be there to act as a countervailing force against the Cindy Sheehan-Jane Fond march from the Vietnam Memorial to the Pentagon," retired Navy Capt. Larry Bailey said. "We will protect the Vietnam Memorial. If they try to deface it, there will be some violence, I guarantee you."

Bailey and thousands of his fellow Vietnam vets are worried that the anti-war protesters will damage the wall, just as they spray-painted the steps of the Capitol at their last march.

The wall is sacred to the men and women who fought in that war.

"It is our contact with our dead brothers -- those who lost their lives in the cause of their country," Bailey said.

And so it is that Washington will see a Gathering of Eagles - Americans determined to stand up against leftist propagandists who denigrate U.S. troops and the mission for which they sometimes sacrifice their lives.

Retired Col. Harry Riley organized the Gathering of Eagles. Organizers hope thousands will show up in Washington from as far away as Hawaii, and they won't only be Vietnam veterans. Families, friends and veterans of other wars, including Iraq, and soldiers still on active duty, will be there to defend the Wall.

"When we say a gathering of eagles, that signifies people who support the American way," Bailey said.

The leftist Web site MarchonPentagon.org describes the anti-war demonstrators this way: "The March on the Pentagon has already attracted more than 1,500 endorsers, including prominent individuals and national and grassroots organizations. Students on college campuses and in high schools will be attending in large numbers. There will be a large turnout from the Muslim and Arab American community, which is organizing throughout the country."

The movement is well-financed. Its sponsor list is lengthy and contains highly recognizable names, as well as those of Fonda and Sheehan:

  • Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark (who offered his services to defend Saddam Hussein)

  • Ultra-liberal Congresswoman Maxine Waters

  • Former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney

  • Ron Kovic, Vietnam veteran and author of "Born on the 4th of July"

  • Mahdi Bray, executive director, Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation

  • Waleed Bader, vice chair of the National Council of Arab Americans and former president of Arab Muslim American Federation

  • Medea Benjamin, co-founder, CODEPINK and Global Exchange

  • Free Palestine Alliance

  • Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation

  • Islamic Political Party of America

  • FMLN (Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front)

  • Islamic-National Congress

  • Gay Liberation Network

  • Muslim Student Association

  • Jibril Hough, chairman, Islamic Political Party of America

Retired Air Force Col. Smitty Harris, a former Vietnam POW, doesn't believe Fonda's protests carry the weight they once did. Harris says Fonda's actions at the march last month were "anti-American," just as they were in the 1970s, and won't have much effect on public opinion.

"It was big news during the Vietnam era when they had these marches ... because people didn't have all the alternative ways of finding out what is true and what's not," he recently told Agape Press. "So I don't think it's going to have a big effect." In fact, he says, it could even be counterproductive.

Today, Harris points out, Americans have talk radio and media outlets like the Fox News Channel to hear the voices of those who do not agree with Jane Fonda's point of view.

Spitting on Veterans

BY SETH GITELL
February 6, 2007
URL: http://www.nysun.com/article/48084

Anti-war sentiment is moving dangerously close to a place America must never go -- putting our anger on the soldiers that have been fighting the four-year Iraq war.

Some of this takes the form of minimizing what happened the last time American GIs returned from an unpopular war -- Vietnam. Liberal commentators, such as MSNBC's Keith Olbermann (Host of Countdown), are diminishing the hostile treatment Vietnam veterans garnered when they returned from Vietnam. countdown@msnbc.com

On the air on Thursday, Mr. Olbermann disparaged the old report of Vietnam veterans being spit upon when they came home: "And, oh, by the way, there is not one confirmed case, not one, of Americans spitting on veterans returning from Vietnam."

Washington Post blogger William Arkin, meanwhile, went so far as to lay a condition for America's "support" of veterans. "These soldiers should be grateful that the American public, which by all polls overwhelmingly disapproves of the Iraq war and the President's handling of it, do still offer their support to them, and their respect," Mr. Arkin wrote. "Through every Abu Ghraib and Haditha, through every rape and murder, the American public has indulged those in uniform, accepting that the incidents were the product of bad apples or even of some administration or command order."

Let's state the obvious. First, Mr. Arkin's words are slanderous. To pluralize Abu Ghraib and Haditha and "every rape and murder" is unconscionable. True, there have been some misdeeds, acts as in Vietnam, where there was a William Calley, who was convicted in the murder of 22 Vietnamese civilians at the My Lai massacre. But in Vietnam there also was helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson who stopped Calley from killing even more innocents. The bulk of the American soldiers cannot be held responsible for the isolated wrong.

And, as for Mr. Olbermann, the point is not whether the social science research collected in Jerry Lembcke's book "The Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam" is correct and that no evidence exists of returning veterans being spit upon, but how most of these men were treated after the war.

In my family, the subject of America's support for returning Vietnam veterans is not an academic one. This past July, I sat down for breakfast with my father and a small group of veterans to talk about that war and its aftermath.

To my left, sat my father, Gerald Gitell, who served as the executive officer of a Special Forces A-Team in Vinh Gia, South Vietnam. He lead irregular Vietnamese forces in combat, worked to win over the native population of fishermen, and risked his life to help bring medical care to civilians when American napalm burned them.

Through a complicated set of circumstances, when he was at Fort Bragg prior to going to Vietnam, he was befriended by Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler and helped produce the iconic pro-soldier anthem, "The Ballad of the Green Berets." When he returned, the song had become the number one song in America.

A Boston radio talk show invited him as a guest. Poison and invective came in from one of the callers, "If you weren't killing babies in Vietnam, you'd be killing them here," she hissed. Although she was unable to spit directly on him, the call was the verbal equivalent.

Across the breakfast table from me sat Rudy Loupias. Rudy fought in the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines at Dai Do in 1968. Little known to the public and recognized by historians as the Battle of Dong Ha, this pitched fight saw brutal combat, sometimes hand-to-hand.

The American people were in no mood to support Rudy when he came back from Vietnam. When he returned, he kept his personal history quiet. "I didn't reveal I was a Vietnam veteran because they labeled us as ‘baby killers,'" he recalls. "Even at parties nobody knew I was a Vietnam veteran."

Rudy thinks the public should treat soldiers the way they did after the first Iraq war. "It's too bad you had to feel that way -- the hurt," he says. He didn't tell me anything about being spit on, but the pain in his voice says enough.

Health care professionals say that the reception veterans receive when they return from war goes a long way to mitigating problems down the line. The worst thing for soldiers who have just returned from war is to be vilified.

True support for the troops is nonideological and nonpartisan. These men and women have risked everything for us and must not be turned into political pawns. When their tours of duty come to an end and in the many years to come, we must continue to stand by them.

Nam Vets
by Bob Scheyer

When the Lord was creating Vietnam veterans, he was into His 6th day of overtime when an angel appeared. "You're certainly doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And God said, "Have you seen the specs on this order? A Nam vet has to be able to run 5 miles through the bush with a full pack on, endure with barely any sleep for days, enter tunnels his higher ups wouldn't consider doing, and keep his weapons clean and operable. He has to be able to sit in his hole all night during an attack, hold his buddies as they die, walk point in unfamiliar territory known to be VC infested, and somehow keep his senses alert for danger. He has to be in top physical condition, existing on c-rats and very little rest. And he has to have 6 pairs of hands."

The angel shook his head slowly and said, "6 pair of hands .... no way."

"It's not the hands that are causing me problems ... it's the 3 pair of eyes a Nam vet has to have."

"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through elephant grass, another pair here in the side of his head for his buddies, another pair here in front that can look reassuringly at his bleeding, fellow soldier and say, 'You'll make it...' when he knows he won't."

"Lord, rest, and work on this tomorrow."

"I can't," said the Lord. "I already have a model that can carry a wounded soldier 1,000 yards during a firefight, calm the fears of the latest FNG, and feed a family of 4 on a grunt's paycheck."

The angel walked around the model and said, "Can it think?"

"You bet," said the Lord. "It can quote much of the UCMJ, recite all his general orders, and engage in a search and destroy mission in less time than it takes for his fellow Americans back home to discuss the morality of the War, and still keep his sense of humor. This Nam vet also has a phenomenal personal control. He can deal with ambushes from hell, comfort a fallen soldier's family, and then read in his hometown paper how Nam vets are baby killers, psychos, addicts, killers of innocent civilians."

The Lord gazed into the future and said, "He will also endure being villified and spit on when he returns home; rejected and crucified by the very ones he fought for."

Finally, the angel slowly ran his finger across the vet's cheek, and said, "There's a leak... I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."

"That's not a leak," said the Lord. "That's a tear."

"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.

"It's for bottled up emotions, for holding fallen soldiers as they die, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for the terror of living with PTSD for decades after the war, alone with it's demons, with no one to care or help."

"You're a genius," said the angel, casting a gaze at the tear.

The Lord looked very sombre, as if seeing down eternity's distant shores... "I didn't put it there," He said.

Will You?

THE SPIRIT OF THE WALL
The Viet Nam Veteran's Memorial

I STOOD BEFORE THE WALL TODAY ...
COMPLETELY UNPREPARED
FOR THE BITTERSWEET EMOTIONS
THAT RAINED DOWN UPON MY HEAD.

MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS HAVE COME ... AND GONE
SINCE THAT AWFUL WAR WAS FOUGHT ...
I THOUGHT THE PAIN HAD 'GONE AWAY'
I WAS SURPRISED THAT IT HAD NOT.

WE SENT OUR BEST AND BRIGHTEST LIGHTS
TO A JUNGLE FAR AWAY ...
WHERE FOR A CAUSE SO GOOD AND NOBLE,
WE COMMITTED TO THE FRAY.

I CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU
OF ALL THE PAIN WITHIN THE WALL ...
OR HOW IT WAS 'WE, THE PEOPLE'
WHO SCORNED OUR SOLDIERS, ONE AND ALL.

AS I LOOKED AT ALL THE MANY NAMES
ENGRAVED UPON THIS WALL
I REACHED OUT WITH A TREMBLING HAND,
AS IF ... TO CATCH THEM ... AS THEY'D FALL.

MY HEART, I THOUGHT, IS BREAKING
FOR THE LIVES THEY'D NEVER KNOW ...
AND, AS I HEARD THAT LONELY BUGLE PLAY.
I THOUGHT OF THOSE WHO'D LOVED THEM SO ...

AND THEN ...
I SAW A MAN - NO LONGER YOUNG
KNEELING AT THE WALL...
HIS FINGERS TOUCHED BUT JUST ONE NAME ...
I HEARD HIM WHISPER ...'THROUGH IT ALL'

OUR SOLDIERS NEVER FALTERED ...
NEVER SAID THEY WOULDN'T GO ...
AND , AGAIN, THIS DAY, THEY FIGHT FOR ME
IN SPITE OF 'EVERYTHING THEY KNOW'.

I STOOD BEFORE THE WALL TODAY ...
AND REMEMBERED.
