Some Cool to Hot Term, 'Carbon Neutral'
Newsday ^ | 1/31/07 | JOHN LEICESTER

ARIS -- It's a trend that counts Leonardo DiCaprio, London cabs and Al Gore among its followers: Making life "carbon neutral" through tree-planting and other environmentally friendly efforts to curb emissions of heat-trapping carbon dioxide. The theme is a hot one as scientists in Paris this week prepare to issue a major report on global warming -- but critics say the movement is counterproductive, even a scam.

The practicalities of "offsetting" carbon dioxide emitted when flying, driving cars, even getting married are increasingly simple.

A growing array of companies offer to calculate how much carbon dioxide such activities give off and how much money should be given to projects that, in theory at least, will reduce emissions by an equivalent amount somewhere else in the world. It can be done in minutes online, paid for by credit card.

My high school biology is fuzzy, but I recall a lecture on how green plants breathe in carbon dioxide and emit oxygen. If we limit carbon dioxide, doesn't that adversely affect green plants?

Man, and I have been meaning to get in on this scam, too.

I can plant pine trees on my land for $100 a shot charged to the ecoidiots, and cut them down in five years, then sell them back to the idiots as christmas trees.

Looks like a win-win to me.

The environuts have a long way to go to repay their carbon "debt" for stopping the development of nuclear power in the US. The US burns three tons of coal per *second* that could be coming from nuclear power instead.

I refuse to atone for something I have no control over. I can't help it that my car uses gasoline. I use it primarily to get to work as there is no other way for me to get there.

The idea that I should even consider feeling guilty about this is just ridiculous. I will reserve my guilty feeling for action of mine that I do have control over.

Well, if we all stop breathing in the oxygen and exhaling all that carbon dioxide (not to mention the bovine flatulation problem) maybe that would help. Anything for the caws, I always say....

Plants thrive in a CO2-rich environment. Marijuana growers have known this for years. I remember reading something about pumping CO2 into their grow rooms to create bigger, fuller, healthier plants.

Should the fact that my wife maintains 100 roses in our yard (along with many more annuals) make us feel better about ourselves?

Wait a minute and I will check......

Nope. Did'nt think so. I have to go get into my V8 Jeep 4x4 now to run to the store for ice cream.

I got a chuckle out of this when I looked at your username.

I use a different term - 'outrageous'. This is not about you or me. It's about the leftist, feel good, jump on the band wagon (remember the rain forests?), liberal infested brain thought process.

We have had more than one ice age. So what caused the ice to melt the last time? Not man kind.

So far, I've poised that question to two "Global Warming HypeHeads".......the look on the face is priceless. Worth a picture.

But I'd never do that to my camera.

The only part of the hysteria that is'nt a scam is lessening our dependency on middle east oil.

I am all for this but it has nothing to do with global warming. I would like for us to find something else to burn so I could use lots of that without enriching Arab states.

I personally believe much of this will take care of itself with new technologies.

Note to Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Gore: Please, by all means, become "carbon neutral". Of course, there's only one way that actually works, stop breathing.

Pressuring people to 'feel guilt' then do 'acts of atonement' is just more evidence that environmentalists are the earth's newest religious organization - Gaia worship. This pagan religion is trying very hard to get everyone to convert to their religion, and wants those who don't believe to be forced to accept the faith...

Carbon neutral is for wimps; us real men are holding out for Carbon-free, no carbon at all, zip, nada, zilch, zero -- we're standing tall for a Hydrogen only economy and the sooner, the better.

Around 700PPM seems to be optimum.
