JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Jacksonville Narcotics officers shot and killed a man during an undercover operation on the Southside.
The shooting happened in the 2300 block of Westmont Street, just off Philips Highway Saturday night.
"An individual approached from between two houses brandishing a handgun. The officers gave several commands to drop the gun, he did not, so they exchanged gunfire," says Chief Dwain Senterfitt.
Witnesses told First Coast News it appeared the man mistook the officers for drug dealers and was trying to scare them away.

Thank you drug warriors. I am sure this makes your day.
Um, the 81 YO man opened fire on them. What were they supposed to do?
Makes my day!
This is so efffed up. Why didn't the cops just leave this guy's property the first two times he tried to "chase them off". Unbelieivable.
ping
What do you care about this man? He is worth more to you dead than alive so you can whine about drug laws.
End the failed war on some drugs.
Um, leave his property during one of the first three times he told them to...besides it's funny the witness who claims this is the only one who didn't want to be identified.
The JSO strikes again.
Because the cops had already scored five arrests from that position.
I just find it absurd that he decided to start shooting at people on his property before calling the police, especially since they weren't attacking him or damaging his property. And once the officers were shot at, they were forced to fire back.
"Unbelieivable."
What's unbelieveable is you taking the word of an unsourced witness from a Jacksonville 'hood as gold. Next you'll be telling me boats placed explosives along the levee in New Orleans. Some black guy said it. Must be true.
It's still in front of a private citizen's property and they were still undercover. An old man is now dead because of lack of judgement.
Oh right, poor black people always lie. Silly me.
You're assuming that he didn't and the police would take care of the problem. I can tell you as a local that's just not the case.
especially since they weren't attacking him or damaging his property
The guy was eighty and they were attracting criminals to his property...what's he supposed to wait for, them to start actually shooting at him?
And once the officers were shot at, they were forced to fire back.
Whether it started out with them being shot AT is in question, now isn't it? His history was to try to scare off these types. One does not "scare" by shooting "at" people.
You can put all the words in my mouth you want but it doesn't change the fact that you took an unsourced comment from someone in a Jacksonville hood as gold only because it supported prejudices you already have.
I guess your position is that urban blacks never lie about the police?
...and dance on the old fellow's grave to your pro-drug, anti-LEO heart's content...
UM, get off his lawn after the second time he asked...
Absolutely! You don't expect the police to respect the property rights of an old man when they're clicking off "successes" do you?
Where are all the keyboard cowboys who bray about how they'd "take back the streets" from the drug dealers? That's all this guy was trying to do.
