When you were a child, Mommy probably rewarded you for being good and punished you for acting naughty. Now that you're all grown up, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants you to feel just like a child again. The governor's proposed solution for Californians' health care woes includes a plan to reward people who eat good food, get plenty of exercise, don't smoke tobacco or drink booze.
Following in the fine tradition of Mommy, we now have Nanny Schwarzenegger. He's from the government, and he's here to make you do what's good for you.
And you thought you were all grown up?
For good little boys and girls who exercise, improve their diet, quit smoking and drink less alcohol, the governor proposes to reward them with health care discounts. Of course, that would require undergoing periodic assessments to determine your health risks and to get suggestions of how to modify your behavior, which is another way of saying, "Behave the way the government wants you to."
Want a break in health care costs? Just submit to the dietary police's litany: "How much do you weigh? What did you have for lunch? Did you have a beer today? You're not sneaking a smoke behind the garage, are you?"
Gov. Schwarzenegger, who, incidentally, is a habitual cigar smoker, also would increase access to quit-smoking and alcohol treatment programs, if necessary which is to say, if the governmental nanny deems it to be necessary. People receiving medical care from public health plans like Medi-Cal could get weight-loss counseling and gym memberships, which is something even Mommy may not have provided.

The very definition of the "Nanny State."
And don't forget to wipe your butt in the prescribed manner, too, junior.

We're going to need a huge enforcement arm to make sure everybody plays nice.
Or maybe no one will ever lie about this sort of thing.
And no spanking either!
Time to retire, Arnold.

Remove all the stupid restrictions on health insurance (or get rid of it entirely) and let the market take care of it. Yes, a health food eating jogger who does not smoke should pay much less than a fat a$$ who smokes and only wears sweats because they have no other clothes that fit, but that is a choice to make and price to pay for the individual, not the nanny state. I mean I'm really sorry if someone has rotten genes, teeth or luck but not sorry enough to empty my pocket book or bank account.

This could be great...if they apply these rules as a condition for receiving welfare benefits. ;)

Where I work, our health insurance is going in that direction. THis year, if we take a health assessment, we get a discount on our policies. I wonder if next year, they will be introducing lifestyle mandates if you want such discounts on your premiums.

My guess is that McDonalds will soon find itself experiencing the wrath of the CA legislature.

If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny.

The only thing that will be left for them to do is to tell us how to think.

Your health insurance will be much cheeper if you just shorten your lifespan. Why prolong the inevitable?

During his weight lifting days his weight/mass would have registered as obese - therefore, the government could stop him and others interested in pushing iron.
Is he saying he was wrong in his lifestyle choices?

Will the Governator reward us if we stop taking massive amounts of anabolic steroids to increase muscle mass in order to win bodybuilding contests?
