Anti-war protesters were allowed to spray paint on part of thewest front steps of the United States Capitol building after police wereordered to break their security line by their leadership, two sources toldThe Hill.
According to the sources, police officers were livid when theywere told to fall back by U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) Chief Phillip Morse andDeputy Chief Daniel Nichols. "They were the commanders on the scene," one source said,who requested anonymity. "It was disgusting."
After police ceded the stairs, located on the lower west frontof the Capitol, the building was locked down, the source added.
A second source who witnessed the incident said that the policehad the crowd stopped at Third Street, but were told to bring the policeline in front of the Capitol.
Approximately 300 protesters were allowed to take the steps andbegan to spray paint "anarchist symbols" and phrase such as "Ourcapitol building" and "you can’t stop us" around the area, thesource said.
Morse responded to these claims in an e-mail Sunday afternoon,explaining that the protesters were seeking confrontation with the police.
"While there were minor instances of spray painting ofpavement by a splinter group of Anarchists who were seeking a confrontationwith the police, their attempts to breach into secure areas and rush thedoors of the Capitol were thwarted," Morse said. "The graffiti waseasily removed by the dedicated [Architect of the Capitol] staff, some of whom responded on their day off to quickly clean the area."
He added, "It is the USCP's duty and responsibility to protectthe Capitol complex, staff and public while allowing the public to exercisetheir First Amendment rights … at the end of the day, both occurredwithout injury to protestors or officers."

Sure is, but worse than, to me anyway, it was like they were spitting in the face of those of us who care for our country. If any building is a symbol of our country, it's the capitol building.
Man, last time I was there, they seemed very serious about guarding that building. I guess it's off limits to law-abiding people anyway. Barricades and big guns.

No, and I sincerely hope the nitwits do it again. I hope they do it several times, enough times for the likes of Rngel, Murtha, Leahy, Conyers, etc. to issue public statements defending the little punks. These statements can be edited over video of the vandalism, which will serve as a party beacon in 2008.

This is a great story! The radio station America FM was doing one of its "Is Anyone Listening?" bits this morning. The first question was, "Ever have a celebrity pull up with the 'Do you know who I am?' routine?"
A woman called in and said that a few years a go, while visiting her cattle rancher uncle in Billings, MT, she had occasion to go to dinner at a restaurant that does not take reservations. The wait was about 45 minutes; many ranchers and their wives were waiting. TedTurner and his ex-wife Jane Fonda came in the restaurant and wanted a table.The hostess informed them that they'd have to wait 45 minutes. Jane Fonda asked the hostess, "Do you know who I am?" The hostess answered, "Yes, but you 'll have to wait 45 minutes." Then Jane asked if the manager was in.
When the manager came out, he asked, "May I help you?""Do you know who we are?" both Ted and Jane asked. "Yes, but these folks have been waiting, and I can't put you ahead of them." Then Ted asked to speak to the owner. The owner came out, and Jane again asked,"Do you know who I am?" The owner answered, "Yes, I do. Do you know who I am? I am the owner of this restaurant and I am a Vietnam Veteran. Not only will you not get a table ahead of my friends and neighbors who have been waiting here, but you also will not be eating in my restaurant tonight or any night. Good bye."

This news made me cry.
I'm glad someone had the guts to stop them at the Capitol doors, but they should not have been allowed to deface the grounds of *our* Capitol at all.
Lord help us, they should not have *wanted* to do so.
I'm wondering where the pictures are. If you can get a ticket because a traffic cop takes your picture from the side of the road, why couldn't these thuggish vandals be charged?
Many of these nuts are anarchists and don't understand law and order.
I was at the Austin Texas Rally for Life, since I helped organize it.
