Diverse Voices To Denounce Iraq Troop Plan [Hanoi Jane's war protest] [FR DC Chapter opposes]
Washington Post ^ | January 27, 2007 | By Michael E. Ruane

Tens of thousands of demonstrators from across the country are expected to converge in Washington today to urge the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq as President Bush is proposing to send more troops in an effort to stabilize the country.

They plan to rally on the Mall, march around the north side of the Capitol and send a strong message to the government.

The event, which authorities said could draw 100,000 people, starts with a rally at 11 a.m. Among those expected to address the crowd are Jane Fonda, Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon and Jesse Jackson.

The march, organized by the group United for Peace and Justice, is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

~~snip~~

Fifty to 100 members of the Washington chapter of the conservative organization FreeRepublic.com plan to rally near the U.S. Navy Memorial to oppose the march and the participation of Jane Fonda, the chapter said. The actress has long been the object of conservative ire for her support of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

"These groups are the ones that are acting as the political arm of the terrorists overseas to help bring about America's defeat in the war on terror," said Kristinn Taylor of FreeRepublic.com.

I think for a moment there she just sounded like her husband.

She wants people to ask questions, I wonder how watered down these will be from her supporters....I can't wait to hear her "answer" questions.

If this were a Bush the media would have plants out there to try to trip him up, I am willing to bet people at this rally will all be drinking the Kool-aid and not asking what needs to be asked.

Nice of C-Span to run a Hillary Infomercial back to back with the protest. Just giving a full spectrum view of political thought these days. ;-).

I love how she opened by mentioning the color guard. I wonder if they had to remind her rent a mob not to spit on the flag this time, like they did several years ago in Albany

This is just as much a lovefest as the march was a hatefest.

You know this is NOT the general public.

I wonder if she will mention Bill.

"We are 'creating' a consensus in our country for universal healthcare."

Yes, the drumbeat is loud, isn't it? Creating was a good choice of words for that.

Oh, yes, it really happened.

Honor guard harassed at Arena
Albany -- Police unit was spit at and called names as they carried flags at Democratic convention

Members of the Albany Police Department Honor Guard were harassed and spit on by a few people as they carried flags into Tuesday's Democratic state convention at Pepsi Arena, officials said.

"This was probably a very small minority in a sea of legitimate Democratic Party members,'' said Albany Police Chief John C. Nielsen. "It's probably going to send the wrong message about what was in fact an overwhelmingly peaceful, law-abiding and respectful group.''

President Bill Clinton attended the ceremony as state Democrats unanimously nominated Hillary Rodham Clinton as their U.S. Senate candidate.

The five-member honor guard, which is made up of Albany police officers, told authorities that some people in the crowd of 11,500 Democratic supporters called them "Nazis'' and "members of (New York City Mayor Rudolph) Giuliani's 'Third Reich.' ''

The harassment took place as the officers entered the arena around 5:45 p.m. in front of the Albany Police Department Pipes & Bags band.

The honor guard were in full-dress uniform and carrying the American flag, said Detective Thomas McGraw, president of the Albany Police Officers Union.

"We are very upset,'' McGraw said. "The honor guard were asked to act as ambassadors to the city of Albany. They were invited guests and they were volunteering their time.''

The incidents allegedly took place on the floor of the arena, where only delegates carrying passes were allowed access, officials said.

Mayor Jerry Jennings blasted those responsible.

"I'd love to identify these individuals,'' Jennings said. "It's unfortunate there are people who don't know how to act. It's behavior I find reprehensible.''
