U.S. confirms troops' kidnapping in Iraq (4 GIs Handcuffed And Shot In Head)

Four American soldiers were abducted during a sophisticated sneak attack last week in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, the U.S. military confirmed Friday. It said three were shot to death and a fourth was mortally wounded with a gunshot to the head when they were found in a neighboring province, far from the compound where they were captured.

Two of the four were handcuffed together in the back seat of an SUV near the southern Iraqi town of Mahawil. A third dead soldier was on the ground nearby. The fourth soldier died on the way to the hospital, the military said in a statement issued late Friday that confirmed details reported by The Associated Press earlier.

On Jan. 20, the day of the raid on a security meeting in Karbala, the military said five soldiers were killed repelling the attack.

The brazen assault, 50 miles south of Baghdad, was conducted by nine to 12 militants posing as an American security team, according to two senior U.S. military officials as well as Iraqi officials. They traveled in black GMC Suburban vehicles _ the type used by U.S. government convoys _ had American weapons, wore new U.S. military combat fatigues, and spoke English.

"We would have lost WWII using the same analysis."

We would have lost WWII if we had fought it in this way.

America in 1940 and America now are two different countries, we were a homogeneous country in which the female vote had not really come into it's own yet.

Whenever the question of how different modern America is from the past, just look at the white male vote on the question, and you will see that they are pretty much the same as they have always been.

While the old voting block of white males still vote the same, the electorate is much more diverse now, and a majority female.

For all the inability of Arabs and Persians to engage in meeting engagement warfare in the last five centuries they have always been very good at guerrilla warfare. TE Lawrence noted their skill in the " Seven Pillars of Wisdom".

When Kipling mentioned the arab smile he knew what he was talking about. There is no more disingenuous gesture on earth. It often precedes a dagger in the back.

To attempt to play to the fears of those of us at home here in America. It is long past time to send in the bombers.

Level Iraq and then leave.

[why they would take the trouble to kidnap a "low level squad"?]

For the psychological impact. It's just another method of terror-ism.

There was a post yeaterday or the day before where she said this is an example of how unsafe and unprepared our troops are for this type of war and why we should look to draw down our committment now!

So lets prepare them and go take out the bad guys.

"Level Iraq and then leave."

That would be my version of "Cut and Run". Cut them to soup cubes with bombers, and then run before the corpses start to stink.

this is obviously an attempt to show our vulnerabilities and weaken our resolve... could be an attempt to now question whether our security details are legit... get us guessing and shooting at ourselves and real allies...

but mainly a play to keep the dissidents in country to blather on about withdrawl... bush needs to answer big by leveling something...

and soon.

I am sure all the confusion in the media will be straightened out. Peloisi and Murtha are over there on a fact finding mission. The real truth will come out when they make their report to the American people.

But they kept saying that if we treated them really well as prisoners that they would treat our prisoners the same.
That if we gave them Geneva status then our soldiers would be treated that way as well.
So now that they live in country club conditions gaining weight and planning attacks with all kinds of attorneys wanting to help them they are barbaric to our soldiers.

Hey lefties what happened?
You said this wouldn't happen.

Makes me wonder how many more of our best and brightest will have to perish for this ungrateful @#$%^ &*^$#@%$ (insert your own insults). I think you've got something right Cinnamon, what happened to the Old Agent Orange. I'd imagine that'd take care of old Muqtada Alsadar.

Amazing isn't it how people forget their history. The Japs did even worse and so did Soviet proxies.

Muslims have been doing this kind of stuff all along, and certainly US troops took much worse in previous wars. The difference is that we are not fighting an army backed by a state. How do you flatten an entire Iraqi town or region if the perps are from Yemen for example? Unless you can prove that the terrorists are coming from a specific region...well then obliterate where they come from.

Yes, this happened. The particular details of the kidnapping and murders only recently came out (obviously I've known about them all along). It was well-planned, executed, and enjoyed complicity by Iraqi Police and Army and local government officials at all levels. Right this very moment my Soldiers are busting some skulls going after these guys (I'm headed home on leave). Karbala is rapidly becoming a very dangerous area, especially during this demented Ashura holiday of their's. Keep my Soldiers in your prayers, please.
