(CBS4) MIAMI Die-hard football fans attending the Super Bowl game at Dolphin Stadium are getting a rude awakening after finding out that no tailgating of any type will be allowed on game day within one mile of the stadium.
"There is no tailgating allowed in the Dolphin Stadium parking lots," Sue Jaquez, a member of the Super Bowl XLI Host Committee, confirmed on Tuesday. "And there is no tailgating anywhere within a one-mile radius of the stadium." "And there are no RVs allowed."
Tailgating is permitted during regular- and post-season games for Dolphins fans, a team official on Tuesday said it would indeed be allowed at the Super Bowl. According to Jaquez, however, the official has been seriously misinformed.
The Dolphins do not organize and oversee the Super Bowl, Jaquez pointed out. Instead, those duties are left up to NFL officials. And because of security reasons, no pre-game partying on (or very near) the premises will take place. Fans spotted tailgating could face charges, Jaquez said.
"This is part of the NFL, not the Dolphins," Jaquez said. "If the Dolphins are saying there's tailgating -- or think it's going to be allowed -- then they need to contact the NFL."
Detective Nelda Fonticella of the Miami-Dade Police confirmed the Super Bowl rules.
If caught grilling or consuming alcohol within that one-mile radius of Dolphins Stadium, fans initially "will be warned and asked to pick up their things and leave," Fonticella said. "We're trying to make this a pleasant experience for everyone, and there will be plenty to do in the week leading up to the game."
Fun going down is inversely proportionate to price of tickets and "requested" donations going up in the ACC.
I know, but you can't blame me for trying.
I've only been to one Super Bowl (Pasedena, Jan 87). Even though I was mostly there by myself, I thought the pre-game tailgating and goings on were at least as much fun as the game. There were people there from all over the country, and it was one big national party. I was there three hours before the game, and I wish I had gotten there earlier. Eliminating this part of the Super Bowl is just nuts.

$650 a person?! They better have some damn good booze at that party, and it should be served by actual NFL cheerleaders wearing very little.
as a lifelong Cleveland fan, I'd be overjoyed for a first round playoff game in Darfur.........
Bingo---you got it first. Its all about the concessions and the money they will make.
Safety is BS I havent heard a story yet about anybody being burned alive by their charcoal grill at a stadium.
Its all about the money.
We have a winner, and it only took 61 posts to get to the truth of the matter. It's the same reason why the NFL put division rivalries on its own network and then told cable companies more than 45 miles from the middle of the "home markets" they couldn't carry the game.
I've seen the Browns play, they couldn't win there either!
Okay, now you've ruined it for me. I was trying hard not to have expectations. NOW, I have expectations!
Now I'm jealous. I could REALLY ignore the NFL in Vegas.
"He wishes."
Don't you?
.. guess since it's been done as a movie no self-respecting jihadist would attempt the real thing.
I think the NFL would be a lot better served if it cracked down on steroids and the felonious behavior of its players. But since they can't (won't) do that, penalize the fans.
"Has this been enforced at any other Super Bowl games?"
Yes, there was no tailgating allowed last year too.
I doubt it.
'You implying they're still snotty?
1-mile, huh? I'd make them bring out the officials with the chains to measure it...
While I don't necessarily ignore the NFL, I do prefer college ball. As for banning tailgating at the stadium, I think it's nuts.
Whoever said it's all about the money first nailed it. If terrorists wanted to hit the Super Bowl, they could hit the stadium during the game just as easily as hitting the parking lot.
That's certainly true. Just compare the Chicago Bears today and the one that was led by Jim McMahon back in '85. The only really large guy on that team was Refrigerator Perry.
Well, as a Browns fan, I don't have to worry about that.
