Tailgating Forbidden For Super Bowl

(CBS4) MIAMI Die-hard football fans attending the Super Bowl game at Dolphin Stadium are getting a rude awakening after finding out that no tailgating of any type will be allowed on game day within one mile of the stadium.

"There is no tailgating allowed in the Dolphin Stadium parking lots," Sue Jaquez, a member of the Super Bowl XLI Host Committee, confirmed on Tuesday. "And there is no tailgating anywhere within a one-mile radius of the stadium." "And there are no RVs allowed."

Tailgating is permitted during regular- and post-season games for Dolphins fans, a team official on Tuesday said it would indeed be allowed at the Super Bowl. According to Jaquez, however, the official has been seriously misinformed.

The Dolphins do not organize and oversee the Super Bowl, Jaquez pointed out. Instead, those duties are left up to NFL officials. And because of security reasons, no pre-game partying on (or very near) the premises will take place. Fans spotted tailgating could face charges, Jaquez said.

"This is part of the NFL, not the Dolphins," Jaquez said. "If the Dolphins are saying there's tailgating -- or think it's going to be allowed -- then they need to contact the NFL."

Detective Nelda Fonticella of the Miami-Dade Police confirmed the Super Bowl rules.

If caught grilling or consuming alcohol within that one-mile radius of Dolphins Stadium, fans initially "will be warned and asked to pick up their things and leave," Fonticella said. "We're trying to make this a pleasant experience for everyone, and there will be plenty to do in the week leading up to the game."

The tailgating is what makes the event. Kinda like a Jimmy Buffet concert - who cares about the music, just show up 8-10 hours early and have a good time.

This is a first for me. Has this been enforced at any other Super Bowl games?

I think the Dolphins ought to call the NFL and tell them they can't use their stadium for the Super Bowl.

They want everybody to spend as much money as possible, not cook burgers in the parking lot. They'll make a lot of excuses about space limitations, alcohol consumption, etc, but it's all money. Does anybody think they'll complain about alcohol consumption at Hef's party? Think they'll close the hotel bars?

Who's going to tell die-hard football fans that some pay hundreds for the game and parking and some pay hundreds just for parking they can't cook up BBQ? This really will get ugly for the ones trying to enforce this.

"And there is no tailgating anywhere within a one-mile radius of the stadium."

WTF!!! There are several hundred private residences within a mile radius of the stadium. Did the NFL just trump everybody's property rights? What if one of the residents right across the canal from the stadium wants to throw a tailgater in his backyard?

NFL has been a bit authoritarian lately when they should do everything in their power to ensure that their customers are being entertained.

If they crack down on their customers too hard, there is a chance that they might quit watching football and instead follow other sports such as MLB, NBA, NHL, or even *gasps* MLS.

How does the NFL or the Dolphins themselves reserve the right to rewrite the laws in a one mile circumference of the perimeters of their property?

We have gone to every Jimmy Buffett concert in Irvine for 20 yrs. About 6 yrs ago they decided there would be no drinking in the parking lot, posted signs everywhere, and sent in the police to patrol.
lol It did them absolutely no good! There was no way they could police over 40,000 people.
