Tailgating Forbidden For Super Bowl

(CBS4) MIAMI Die-hard football fans attending the Super Bowl game at Dolphin Stadium are getting a rude awakening after finding out that no tailgating of any type will be allowed on game day within one mile of the stadium.

"There is no tailgating allowed in the Dolphin Stadium parking lots," Sue Jaquez, a member of the Super Bowl XLI Host Committee, confirmed on Tuesday. "And there is no tailgating anywhere within a one-mile radius of the stadium." "And there are no RVs allowed."

Tailgating is permitted during regular- and post-season games for Dolphins fans, a team official on Tuesday said it would indeed be allowed at the Super Bowl. According to Jaquez, however, the official has been seriously misinformed.

The Dolphins do not organize and oversee the Super Bowl, Jaquez pointed out. Instead, those duties are left up to NFL officials. And because of security reasons, no pre-game partying on (or very near) the premises will take place. Fans spotted tailgating could face charges, Jaquez said.

"This is part of the NFL, not the Dolphins," Jaquez said. "If the Dolphins are saying there's tailgating -- or think it's going to be allowed -- then they need to contact the NFL."

Detective Nelda Fonticella of the Miami-Dade Police confirmed the Super Bowl rules.

If caught grilling or consuming alcohol within that one-mile radius of Dolphins Stadium, fans initially "will be warned and asked to pick up their things and leave," Fonticella said. "We're trying to make this a pleasant experience for everyone, and there will be plenty to do in the week leading up to the game."

Heck, the homeowners nearby should rent out their property for tailgaters.

Now that's a great business idea. I'd be making a bundle if I lived there.

Went to a super bowl at that stadium a while back, just getting in and out of it without getting killed would make it a good event for me.
The area is like a free fire zone.

Is there no privately owned property within a mile of the stadium?

Here is what surrounds Dolphins Stadium for about more than a mile around. Not sure if there's much in the way of private property.

I think they are doing it because they want more money from food & beverage sales inside the stadium.

May have been the hot and juicy lawyers, too. I'm sure they stuck their oars in.

I'm not sure how well you know the Miami area---or the area around Dolphins/Pro Player/Joe Robbie Stadium, but check out the link on post # 43.

I do think that some of the "tailgating" is getting a bit out of hand. When people drive up trailing full kitchens behind their cars, that's not really tailgating, that's more like "yuppie tailgating".

I'm not a Colts fan but live in Indy.
You can't make it a Bears home game, LOL
The game should be played at Ross-Ade (Purdue) in Lafayette, ND in South Bend, or Memorial (UI) in Champaign.
JMHO

The newest level of bureaucracy,"The BBQ Police". The fines will include one slab of ribs and a Bud Light.

Well, it's clear everything on the bottom half is houses, plus you could rent out the parking lot at the race track. Heck, I'm guessing it's being used for auxillary parking for the game anyway, because there aren't nearly enough parking spaces in the stadium parking lot.

Of course it's a security concern. Super Bowl is one huge target. Literally thousands could be wiped out while billions watched on tv around the globe.

I flew into New Orleans on Super Bowl Sunday 2002, the first following 9-11, with an arrival about an hour or two before game time. You can bet I checked out every passenger on that flight. Fortunately, the crowd was mostly those wild and crazy Cajuns returning from a DC Mardi Gras ball.

If the tailgaiting ban was considered long ago, however, the NFL should have considered renting an equally huge parking area nearby and letting people do their tailgaing thing there, then bus them over to the stadium. Some alternative should have been planned and probably will be in the future.
