WASHINGTON -- Russia and the United States may be heading for another clash of wills as a United Nations mediator prepares to issue his recommendation today in Brussels over whether the province of Kosovo should break free from Serbia, a close ally of Moscow.
U.S. and NATO peacekeepers are on heightened alert in Kosovo as U.N. Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari gives a closed-door briefing on Kosovo in Vienna, Austria, to the six-nation "Contact Group" trying to broker a diplomatic deal.
Serbia has vowed to keep control of the province, whose overwhelmingly ethnic Albanian majority is demanding independence. Kosovo has been in political limbo since 1999, when a U.S.-led bombing campaign drove out Serbian troops under President Slobodan Milosevic.
Western diplomats fear Kosovo's impatient Albanian leadership could resort to violence if their statehood hopes are blocked. About 16,000 NATO-led peacekeepers remain in the province eight years after the end of that war.....

Who ordered that attack and why was Kosovo such a threat to us? /s
How will we react in the future if an overwhelmingly Mexican population demands independence for AZ, CA, NM, and TX?
We should have left once Bush took office.
Boy Klinton really got us stuck in another VietNam.......
Clinton ordered it, Clinton & Blair rounded up a coalition of the unwilling, only to ultimately discover that there was no "genocide of Albanians" in Kosovo -- there was a Kosovo Albanian Seperatist group trying to steal land from Serbia and NATO was used as their military tool. The Serbs were never a threat to us or to Europe, they had been our ally through two World Wars.
This is what Clinton was screwing around with (besides Monica) while bin Laden was planning 9/11 !
The same way Lincoln did when the southern states attempted to secede over states rights.
What's the exit strategy?
Not good.
We took the land away from the Serbian Christians, who were then driven out, and now the invaders want "independence".
No wonder Russia is a bit miffed.
Love your tagline ;)
I have never understood why the U.S. had to intervene in a situation that could have been handled by Europeans. I assume it's because the Democrats believe this was a good, humanitarian war - despite the fact that we had no national interest at stake. It's the wars in the Middle East, where we do have a national interest, that are the bad wars.
The "west" is missing how deeply culture is given prominence, even political prominence, in Russia and in much eastern Europe, on a par with what the west views as "left" and "right" political positions.
Current Russian support for Serbia reflects the east's unashamed cultural affinities and their unashamed defense of their native cultures, more than a continuation of the former "communist" linkages between Russia and Easten Europe.
It is only natural that the west would misunderstand this, about Russia and Eastern Europe, as it continues the left-inspired march to destroy its own culture, while it raises a political class that applauds that suicidal effort as a positive development.
Our political class cannot see the importance of culture to Russia and much of eastern Europe, as it's own political lens dismisses its own culture (long-term long-in-development roots of historic-ethnic-language-religious-philosophical values) as largely irrelevant.
Offer them NJ. Take it or leave it.
Uh, lemme see now. Was it the, um....... pervert in chief? LOL
We should have fought on the side of the Christians and not the Muslims.
How did congress vote on this? I don't remember.
